The Other “Range”: Lets talk guns

I won't post pics or videos. But thank you for posting this thread. I know some will be "triggered" 😆  from this, but they have the option to not look either.

I got started in hunting in my teens, family rifles were used. Mossberg 12g pistol grip, a Winchester 308, 10g snake gun, couple different .22 rabbit poppers. Hunted moose, bear, coyote, hogs, deer. All sorts of fowl, small game,  etc. First skinning was a squirrel, and had to roast it on a stick and eat it.

It wasn't until my late 30s I began in Law Enforcement,  and by then, the world of defense had changed/progessed alot. We went through G17, G19, G27, and most recently a G43 as a backup piece.

I've been through a dozen or so personal handguns, from 22s to 45s. Trades, swap sales, pawn shop specials, gun shows, etc. Currently my CCW consists of a few different 9mm's. The home intrusion deterrents are a few custom builds (that are 100% compliant), 2 rifles, a shotgun.  I also inherited a nice Ed Brown from my uncle. That gets taken out and used once a year, as a memorial to him.

I have 2 heavily wooded acres in back I use for "sighting" in, and "testing" different ammo. If I need more than 75 yards, my neighbor has 5 acres behind me.

I no longer hunt solo as it got darned expensive! Lot leases are not cheap here, nor are clubs. I do have opportunities to go through friends, but it's not a priority.

Wow, I thought this would get more replies. Was worth a shot!

Here is a picture of 2 mag dumps at 20 yards, I had to burn up some reloads. (Just so a friend could use his new equipment to reload these.)

So possibly unexpected for a downstate NYer, ie. someone who didn't grow up with guns or going hunting; note I have taken gun safety training - currently have a Mossberg 500 (20ga) and a Henry 001 (.22 LR/SR). Although there are a few ranges on LI unfortunately they're all at least 45-60 minutes from where I live so I don't get there all that much...

Would like to eventually get into trap and skeet.

Definitely a subject that not everyone is into which is fine. I just wanted to get something up that would direct people to a spot.

Much like golf, shooting is a whole group in itself that can tinker and build equipment. Such a cool subject.

PSA: if any political discussions take place in this thread they will be hidden and action taken. Please stick to the topic at hand.

Hey everybody! It had come up earlier today in the Good morning thread and the staff wanted to come up with a spot dedicated for this discussion.

i personally enjoy the few weapons I have. I really love hitting the range, tinkering (not as much as my clubs) with my guns and getting different attachments and builds going.

My son thoroughly enjoys using his BB in the yard and I can see him at some point if he wants to, becoming a very good shooter. He already surprises me with his accuracy.

I personally do not hunt at this moment but would like to get into it. My current selection is strictly self defense (yes I know I need a shotgun):

-9mm Springfield XDS is my carry

-I have several diffrent  AR builds mostly in 5.56 and .300 BLKOUTIMG_3711-compressed.jpeg

this one is my favorite by a landslide, .300 BLKOUTIMG_3714-compressed.jpeg

IMG_3713-compressed.jpeg

IMG_3712-compressed.jpeg

I also use a Springfield as my EDC. Absolutely phenomenal piece of gear.

Love the part about removing political discussion. Always enjoy when there can be civil discussion about what can be a touchy topic for some and both parties can come to some middle ground. That being said I'll chime in this as it's something I've been into for a long time. I hunted as a kid but eventually got out of it with my other sports and hobbies going on. Plus I have enough friends that hunt that can't get through all of their meat so I gladly help them not let it goes to waste.

Once I got out of hunting I got into target shooting. The range I belonged to poked out to around 300 yards which was great for my savage tactical chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. I got into pistol and 3-gun comps and loved the modularity of the AR platform. I have a couple different iterations with different sight setups. one being a 1-8X variable vortex optic, one with a dual optic set up with a Trijicon ACOG and 45° offset red dot and the other has a straight holosun red dot (always wanted to upgrade this one to a Eotech). I have a couple pistols ranging from my great Grandfathers Colt M1911 A2 from WW2 with the matching leather US stamped holster to a Glock 19X with a TLR-1 light which is my all time favorite plinking pistol. I'm always hesitant to post pictures so I'll leave you with your imagination on some of the builds I talked about 😀.

As @GolfSpy_SHARK said, I also like the tinkering aspect of firearms as there are so many upgrades and accessories available. Unfortunately its a little more expensive than golf tinkering, imo (at least with my expensive taste lol).

Something I haven’t done nearly as much as I used to. Going to the range and unloading a few mags can be a nice relief.

Ive been able to take some friends and ex in-laws to the range and reach them and let them be less nervous about guns.

I really enjoy shooting outside. I would love to become a member at a shooting range at some point especially long range. I would love to just put a dozen rounds down range to get my fix. Don't need to put a ton of brass down.

Do your friends have any extra extra meat lol.

The range I belonged to had outdoor rifle range (300 yards), pistol range (~100 yards), skeet range, and archery range. It also had a 24/7 indoor pistol range which was the biggest draw for me. I had to cancel my membership a little after covid when ammo prices went from expensive to insane and then just never renewed but still know a couple members that I can join as a guest.

lol I have a couple buddies that have 60+ acres and fill all their tags each season so with a couple poker nights throughout the year venison is easy to come by.

I do carry but the season depends on my EDC. one of my favorites which is year round is my glock 29 in 10MM auto. for summer I typically carry a SW M&P Shield 9MM.

Could start a small debate on EDC do you guys go appendix or 4 O'Clock? one in the pipe or need to rack? extra mag or is one enough (probably more for us in states with normal mag capacity laws)?

I had a shield for while really enjoyed it but man the XDS is a landslide better.

I carry at 4 oclock and a round in the chamber. I will always carry with something that has a safety on it so am more than comfortable with one in the chamber. I have the 9 round extended mag for it and that is more than enough for me to carry. I know folks say more is better but I am good with the 9.

Nice, I really like the Sig P365X as a replacement for the Shield but I'm in a holding pattern on buying anything new for the time being.

I carry appendix mostly and with one in the pipe, even with the Glock with took some getting used too but now I find it most comfortable and the position I've trained with the most so muscle memory is pretty solid from that starting point. In NY we are only allowed 7 rounds so I carry an extra mag with me in a holder on my carry belt or just next to my wallet in my back pocket.

I was looking at the 365 originally before the XDS, it was very gray if the XDS was going to get approved in MA for purchase and then it did and a relative out of state transferred one. I will take the $25 transfer fee, saved alot of money.

If I were going for another carry I would go the 365 just because its so small, perfect carry. Wish the Glock43 was Massachusetts compliant.

The coyote color on the 365 is 🔥

Late to the party on this topic but was raised in a hunting family and have been in the woods since age 8 on various hunts with my dad and uncles. I didn't start to carry and actively participate in the hunts until I was 12 per state law in Wisconsin. Started out with a lever action Red Ryder BB gun that was my dads as a kid that he got from my grandpa. The one gun I own is a Remington 870 SPS Super Mag turkey shotgun. This is largely due to the fact that my dad has all of what we've ever used for deer, turkey and pheasant hunting.

My wife and I have considered enrolling in a concealed carry class, but have not yet. I eventually plan to head out west for archery elk hunting, and would be carrying a sidearm as a precaution being in mountain lion and bear country. I don't have a lot of experience with handguns, so it would benefit me two fold.

For those who are looking into firearm safety classes. I recommend using a local sheriff's department. Or police department, if available and they usually have a pretty good range of weapons to try. However, they encourage you to purchase your own and bring your own ammo. I can save from experience that I have taught 5 classes in the last 10 years. And every one of them successful, there are people that should not be carrying though.

Late to the party here. But been shooting since i was about 8. Nothing special mostly just 22 cal olympic style shooting. Got into shotguns for a while but got bored of that. Wife and I daily carry, having a collection of all flavors for whatever we are feeling that day and rotate. Have spent 11 years military so have gotten all sorts of firearms training of all sorts.
The past few years ive mostly been into long distance shooting, spending most of the time between 600 and 1200yds. Current set up is a Ruger RPR in 6.5 creed with a Leupold Viper scope and some decent harris engineering bipod.
Daily carry issue is finding something thats 1. I feel has a decent stopping power with ability to stay on target longer, and 2. Is the right size. Being 6’4 and 230lbs but fit. The issue i always have is something that isnt too small in my hands but small enough for my bodies frame. I love to carry my 1911 in 9mm but sometimes the shirt can get caught on the hammer and that sketches me out a little. Im looking at a 365 romeo

Been playing for about 2 years in total. Winter breaks and a 6month period when I got sick. Starting to feel like myself again and recently played a “okay” round.
I currently have custom fit Cobra LTDx irons/wedges, a Vokey 60(cause my short game has been the best part of my game, and a Maverick 9 deg. Driver. Driving is the worst part of my game so My 4 iron usually takes alot of the long game abuse.

Im looking at the 365 with the rose accessories. So clean

I really enjoy shooting outside. I would love to become a member at a shooting range at some point especially long range. I would love to just put a dozen rounds down range to get my fix. Don't need to put a ton of brass down.

Do your friends have any extra extra meat lol.

Do you carry at all?

We have a club in MA/NH/ME/NY that does like monthly long range competitions. Unfortunately its mostly bring your own type stuff. Its become so so expensive recently with my competition rounds that are custom built being upwards of 5$ a round and even my “practice” ammo will run me average of 60$ for a box of 12.

Definitely a subject that not everyone is into which is fine. I just wanted to get something up that would direct people to a spot.

Much like golf, shooting is a whole group in itself that can tinker and build equipment. Such a cool subject.

Ive found some of the firearms circles are really closed off and unless you hang around a while they wont even look in your direction.

I personally like stack-on. The one I have is pretty old but I prefer the dial because it will always work. Key pads are great and I know they have other ways to get in, just peace of kind for me lol.

Like @GolfSpy_SHARK, I prefer dial. No need to worry about losing a key nor the batteries dying when you need to get into it.

Liberty makes a good safe but they can be pricey. I have a Red Head from bass pro and like it and was affordable.

I prefer dual or key types. I have an older safe. Holds 4-5 rifles, has 5 shelves, and has an internal keyed safe as well at the top. Fits nicely where I planted it, and is accessible rather easily.

if you're planning on moving it yourself I highly recommend renting or buying an appliance dolly that's rated appropriately and has a kick stand. my safe empty is around 600lbs it took 3 guys a truck and a blown out back to get it in the house without said dolly...
