How'd you play?

A beautiful weather day for July in the South Carolina lowcountry...overcast and in the 70s with a slight breeze, very unusual and perfect for a round of golf.

Played the Redbank Golf Course which is on Joint Base Charleston Naval Weapons Station.  Fairly easy and short course, just over 4700 yards from the senior tees.  Since it was Senior Day it was a very reasonable $29 which, considering the not so great course conditions should be the price every day.  This course has a strange setup with the front 9 par at 37 and the back 9 is 33.  Six of the par 4s are under 300 yards but it makes it kind of fun for old farts like myself who only hit 200-220 yard drives.  But I digress...

Had one of my best rounds of the year shooting 45/41 for an 86.  Had two really bad holes (both triples), one double, 9 bogeys, 5 pars and a birdie.  Impressed myself coming off of the triples by parring both of the next holes.  Still leaving a lot of putts short and missing 4 to 5 footers but only had two 3 putts so overall I was really pleased.  Hitting some really nice drives with my new PXG driver and minimizing trouble off the tee.  Really sticking my approach shots as well for the most part.  So I guess I just need to work on my putting and hopefully can keep my scores in the 80s.

Well...I was back at it today.  Didn't do too bad.  Played the mix-member tees at nearly 6200yds.

Had a slow start with a bogey on #1 and ho-hummed my way around until #5.  Hardest hole on the front nine.  Hit a half decent drive, in the fairway no less, leaving me about 160 out to the green.  Scalded a 6I up the hill to about 7 ft.  Tricky downhill putt, slid down the hill and crashed into the cup.  On #9 I had a great drive, then skunked my second shot, on this 533yd par 5, into the left rough.  I couldn't hit a full wedge into the green due to overhanging limbs.  So, I pulled out a PW and knocked it to 3ft....missed the putt of course.  The irony here is the fact that the guy I was playing with and I had discussed half-shots during the first couple of holes and I had stated I didn't really have that shot.  After my approach on 9 he said, "I thought you didn't have that shot!!!."  He was losing and this was his last hole....poor baby. Finished with a 38 on the front. 

I started the back with a bogey as well, just to keep the symmetry in tact.  Anyhow, I managed to birdie 13...a 9i to about a foot.  Also, I birdied 16 with a long putt after a seriously hooking PW onto the green.  Finished back 9 at 37.  

So, overall I managed to tie my second lowest scored here at West Lake.  

I managed to hit 14 fairways and 10 greens today.  No 3 putts...yippee!!!

I was able to get out for 18 holes at Bear Trace today with some friends from work. It was a beautiful day with temps in the mid to high 80's s with a constant breeze blowing.

I had the best round I've had in over a year, shooting 51/51 for a 102. None of the other guys played particularly well and are not pleased with their rounds, but this guy is happy. 

I didn't hit driver all that well, but the other parts of my game were decent. I'm especially proud of my bunker game, I was able to get out of all 5/6 bunkers in one stroke without skulling one over the green. I want to give a special shout-out to @cnosil and @TJ Hall for the sand advice at Kingsmill. 

I had a chance at par on one hole from the sand, splashing out to six feet but I did miss the putt. 

I got to see some wildlife on the course like deer and a raccoon. Almost got run over by a startled fawn on 11 and I'm glad it saw me and veered off. 

All I can say is it was a great day and I'm ready to do it again.

Wait a few years. From first hand experience, when you turn 65 its a lot easier from the senior tees to score better. I'm sure that will fade over time as well. I guess I'll have to start shopping for a skirt next.

Easier on senior tees "distance wise". I found it took a few rounds to get used to senior tees due to different angles and facings.

It's working great! On 12 I had a lie on an upslope near the lip and couldn't take a full follow through and was able to pop it out and get it on the fringe. That was one of my favorite shots of the day.

My daughter got a call from the golf course manager. He said “get your dad off the couch and the two of you come play in the twilight outing tonight”. It’s a four man mixed. You don’t have to twist my arm to go play golf. We did one better. We made it a family affair. Dragged my son and my wife out as well. My wife hasn’t swung a club in 22 years. It was a Captains choice so there was no pressure on her. It was for fun and it only cost $10 per team. But we actually did well. My game was on and everyone contributed. We finished at 5 under par for 9 holes with 12 putts. A nice family evening. Then we went out for dinner on the way home.

I had some good shots. The irons have been a little lackluster but I know when my tempo gets a little quick that I tend to pull them.

Got out this morning for a not so quick 9. I try not to be one to complain about pace but this was a little ridiculous. Played the same course I did last week around similar times. Hit absolute nukes with the driver 309, 315,321. I think I coulda gone longer if it wasn’t for the Dewey fairways but not here to complain, I’ve put ALOT of work into my driver to get here. Chips were alright, been struggling with my like 90-110 shot because it’s between my 58 and my S wedge. Game is feeling pretty good. Putter is on a cold streak so missed like 4-5 birdie chances, so that’ll be getting some reps in the next few days. Finished +6 through 9 and didn’t lose a single ball which is a big W. Short sided myself on 9 cause i let the little river making the green an island intimidate me. A lot to work on as always but feeling good.

I had an OK night in league last night — driver is starting to come around, but I have yet to start trusting where I should aim. I normally aim left and play a fade, but it hasnt been fading. I ended up +7 with 2 doubles, 3 bogies, 4 pars (and a lipped out birdie putt).

It was a good day for vacation golf. The rain finally stopped at 6:30 this morning but it must have dumped because the course was like a sponge. Even the slightest contact behind the ball today, tee shots included, took off 10%-15% of your distance. Didn't make it hard for approach shots as much as it did off the tee. Minimal roll out in the fairway and limited carry off the tee. Still, it's a short course so had mostly wedges into the greens. Add to this the fact that they clearly didn't mow yesterday, and won't be mowing today after all the rain, and the greens were the slowest I might have ever played in 40 years of golf.

Almost dunked this one in from 101 yards. Nice little 2 footer for birdie to drop to -1 through 14. My son made me putt it out. No gimmes today. Competition was tight.

You have to zoom in a little but I managed to get inside my son on the par 3 16th. We both left our birdie putts about 1/4" short of going in. After a disappointing bogey-bogey finish I carded a 73. I really liked my odds of breaking 70 on the par 5 17th tee box but my drive clipped a limb on the left and only went about 170 yards. Had to lay up and left my approach in the greenside bunker. 18 wasn't any better but can't really complain about a fairly mundane round with only a few errors. If the greens were a hair faster I really think I break 70 today. at least 4 putts stopped less than 3" short and my two 3-putts were uphill from over 60 feet and there just wasn't any way to lag it close. The weather isn't looking good for another round tomorrow but our fingers are crossed.

Played 9 this afternoon and had 3 awful awful awful blow-up holes .. but hey the other 6 were decent, so "2 outta 3 ain't bad"..?

First blow-up hole could not get out of the greenside bunker. Second blow-up hit the water hazard. Twice (..after a drop I just babied the short chip back into the same pond....). Third one got in front of the green on a long for me Par 5 and then sent the ball away off to the right .. where it bounced off a tree and backwards .. then did not keep the next shot low enough and hit the branch and it dropped into another bunker .. where I barely got it out onto the fringe.....

Well at least I finished up with a semi-miraculous up and down from an odd spot short-left of the green on #9 for a par.

And yes the cold beverages at the 19th were especially tasty!!

After three wins in a row against my buddy, with some nice mid 70’s scores, I had a serious stumble and he was able to save face with a solid win yesterday 76-80

Yesterday I reverted to my traditional behavior….not hitting greens.  Only hit 8….and 3 putted two of those!  Only managed 3 birdies, resulting in an exhausting 79.  Managed to get up and down from jail quite a few times, but I should not have been there to start with.  Best one was on 18, managed to peel my approach nearly to the 10th fairway just below the tee box.  I was beyond the cart path with over hanging limbs attempting to reach the second tier of a three tiered green.  About 20-25 yards to hole.  So, over the cart path…under the limb…onto the green, then it nearly rolled up to the third tier.  Fortunately, it took the hill down coming to rest a foot from the hole.  It was a wild ride!

‘Celebrated’ US Independence Day with some American friends with an early 9 before the annual chaos starts. 
Plenty of America-Britain banter flying around - as you’d expect- and some decent ball striking from the group.

Unfortunately it rained in increasing intensity for the final 3-4 holes. 
I had a decent enough round, and putted much better than the 17 putts for 9-holes suggests. Good distance control and reading of breaks, but it was one of those days where the long putts are knocking on the door but just won’t go in. 4 tap ins under a foot. It’s progress! 
Tee shots were a mixed bag, but irons and wedges were good. 

The rain was a good opportunity to try out the new 2-way adjustable umbrella mount for the Bag Boy push cart. Much better than the stock holder than came with the cart. 

Lastly, the raw finish on the MG4TW 56* wedge is already starting to ‘gain character’. Only the second outing for it since it arrived- i wasn’t expecting this to happen so quickly. I clean the clubs after every round, so this is after using and cleaning today.

Played Bixby Village which is the small par 30 that I used to frequent.

Only one drive with the Qi10 today that was very clean and I was satisfied with. Irons were very much on point today as well. Wedges and putter left a lot to be desired as I fumbled a few birdie chances, but all in all it was a fun couple of hours outside on the course. If I track back I shot a 35 or 36 but I wasn't tracking strokes too much today.

Played this morning with a few buddies. Played stroke play on the first round of 9 holes and then kinda just played best ball when going around again. Played a decent round with a few mistakes but that’s just part of the game. Very hilly course and can be a track but always a good time. Putter actually felt pretty hot throughout the round, chipping was hot and cold. Driver was sending bombs down the fairway and the 3 wood left a lot to be desired. 

 

Adding this edit cause I could finally load the shot track. The best driver was on the 9 hole that has a long uphill then steep down hill before coming back up at the green. Ended up landing on the back of the green, then bouncing off the back into a little kinda gully area. Then shortsided my chip and 2 putt for a par. Felt bad cause I thought it was going to be close but ended up hammering the drive and driving over the group that was on the green and I thought the were off the green, apologized and they had no idea it was even there.

We sadly got rained out after only 6 holes this morning.  It was a bummer bc it was the only chance for one of my best golf buddies to play for several busy weeks before and after.  It was also likely my last chance to post a VCT score this week.

At least we got full rainchecks.   And the course was beautiful.  Next time will hopefully be very soon.

My round yesterday was a hard, kick in the butt, reminder that the mental game needs just as much practice as the physical game. I almost always play from around 6500 yards and typically hit driver on all par 4s and 5s with a few exceptions. Playing a course around 5900 yards meant hitting a lot of irons off the tee that honestly felt like laying up even though my target landing area was the same as if I had been playing from much further back. I allowed myself to get sucked into focusing on the wrong things and as a result, I hit some poor approach shots and missed putts due to bad reads that I don't normally get wrong. It wasn't until about hole 15 that my mind finally got right after being able to hit driver on a couple holes in a row that I realized why I was playing poorly, and it was the heat or humidity like I wanted to blame. I did finish the round -1 over the last 4 holes with two lip outs for birdie which only served to reinforce that I need to get in a couple more rounds that really test my mental game. Whether its playing a course from the front tees, or just playing a course where I don't bring a driver, just something to force me to think different and play while mentally uncomfortable. Honestly, I think this has been one of my bigger areas of weakness this year. When everything is clicking I can stay in a groove and score really well. But, if things are a little wonky early in the round, I struggle to right the ship and find myself grinding for too many holes.

Well, I finally did it... a 33/38 (71) at Granite Falls North this morning checking off my first ever sub par 18 holes . The card and ball are headed to the trophy case... well, more like drawer in our spare bedroom, but you get the idea. Lot's of "F" and "G" annotations and some clutch 4-5+ foot one putts.  Other than one errant shot on 18, it was one of the best ball striking and on target games ever.  Now it's onto getting that "Broke 70" badge .

Tried a local muni I hadn't been to before.  General good ball striking.
On the course management aspect, I went for 2 hero shots that turned out distinctly unheroic.
If I could have gotten my ego in check I might have had the best scoring round to date.

Congrats on the PB. Looks like sub 70 is right around the corner.
