3 wood suggestions

Recommended Posts

I currently game a Mavrik 3 wood but find that it has a strong tendency to go right. I had a similar problem with my Mavrik driver and changed it for a Ping G430 Max which has been a big improvement.
I’m looking for members views on what could be a good replacement for the 3 wood.
I know that ideally a fitting is my best option but was looking to draw up a shortlist for fitting so opinions on what could be good would be appreciated

I play the Paradym TD and have liked it. I hit the Titleist TR2 3w and really liked the feel and shot it produced but really it's going to depend on the shaft that's in it.

Short list 3 woods for me are consistently older(ish) Cobra fairways. I am a believer in the rail system they had and help improve the playability of the club as a whole. From the F7 to LTDx I firmly believe they are some of the best out there. That's just me tho.

The Cobra F9 and the LTDx are worthy choices.

To the extent that iron lofts keep going down the opposite seems true when it come to woods.  I see "HL"  3 woods at 16 or 16.5 degrees which used to be a pretty typical 4 wood loft, etc.

Forget what's on the sole and see if you can find a Callaway "Heaven Wood" to test drive.  You get a forgiving loft and the longer shaft.

It's to the point where I have to think "I'm looking for something that goes 'x' yards" rather than think in terms of what # is etched on the bottom.

For years I gamed a Big Bertha steelhead and was absolute money with it. Unfortunately my house at the time got broken into, wife's engagement ring, tools, and cherished bag of Mizuno irons, TM Burner driver, that steelhead got snatched!

Ever since I've been hitting a TM RBZ. I went into a funk with it for awhile, but have since figured out the operator error issue and it's been decent. I do want a new one but hard to justify when my shotscope P-avg on it is 230yds, not bad for a 40yr old.

I am a long-time fan (and user) of Tour Edge Exotics fairways, and there is generally at least one (currently a C722 Exotics 4-wood) in my bag.  In addition, the last 3 or 4 generations of Callaway fairways (Epic Flash through Paradym models, including the Rogue ST models) perform very well for me.

DR - Callaway Paradym AI Smoke TD, Newton Motion 4-Dot

4W - Callaway Paradym 3HL, Newton Motion Fairway shaft, 4-Dot

HYB - Paradym X 18*, HZRDUS Smoke Red 80S; Sub 70 949X 21*, same shaft

7W (if played) - Sub 70 849, ProForce Black 80-S

Irons - Callaway Paradym, HZRDUS Silver Gen 4, S-flex

Wedges - Edison 2.0, 53* and 57* (bent to 58*), KBS TGI 100

Putter - (currently in flux, but usually an Evnroll 8V

Ball - Maxfli Tour-X CG (2023)

Bags - Ghost Golf Maverick Black Ops

Cart - MotoCaddy M7 Remote (without the remote)

Spoiler

driver / off the tee is no longer a weakness for me!

I have a Titleist TSR2 3 wood and it has a tendency to go left for me and I even have it turned to the low loft and low lie setting. It’s not the most forgiving FW club I’ve ever used though.
PXG XF FW metals have the rails similar to the old cobras and I really like my 5W from them. Much more forgiving than the Titleist

Been playing the Callaway Epic Max 3W and Heavenwood for the past couple of years.  3W has not been a good club for me until I bought this one.  Bought the Heavenwood first and loved it, so decided to try the 3W.  The Heavenwood is fantastic out of the rough.  The key will be finding the right shaft IMHO.

I've been thinking about this topic more today and realizing despite trying other newer 3 woods and having small honeymoon periods I still just can't get enough of the F7. I know it's old but it works and world really well.

Could save you a bunch and at least I feel it's truly a stellar option!

My two favorites that I have had/hit over the last several years have both been Taylormade. I loved my Sim 2. I eventually got a cracked face and it was replaced under warranty with the Stealth +. Currently still gaming the Stealth. The club is hot. I initially was hitting almost as long as my driver. I cut it down slightly and got it to a good number but it has been a great club for me.

I'm in a similar boat, I currently play a Ping G425 LST 3w but at a recent fitting they recommended the G430 Max instead.  Using the same shaft (Kaili white 70 stiff), there was a significant jump in ball speed and distance, but I found it wanted to go left.  Even lofted down, so more open, it was still going left.  In fact we had to loft the max down to 13.5 to keep the flight down (LST is a standard 14.5 head).

I love how easy Ping fairways are to hit off the deck and also prefer shallow faced fairways like this too so I'm left in a dilemma about switching.  I'm leaving speed and distance in the bag with the 425LST, but don't really want the fear of a hook with the Max.  I've found a Paradym with the same shaft and wonder if that's a better option?

Everyone wants to review drivers, so it's quite hard to get views on fairway woods.

I’ve gone for the Cobra LTDx Max and although only used it on course once I’ve found that it gives me a much straighter flight with nothing going right so hoping that continues

Kind of in a similar dilemma.  A lot of pushes right "until" I made a quick adjustment to the G410.  I set it where it's 1* up FLAT.  It has made it more of a baby draw machine taking the loft to 15.5*.  The other side is the SLDR S 3HL (17* (in my mind a 4w non-adjustable head on a 3w shaft)).  I really like how the TM sits behind the ball, but also love the feel of the Ping.  As Jamie noted - there are some great older 3woods out there that make great clubs.  My son plays a Cobra F9 that he loves but also he has a old school Big Bertha 5w that he can stripe on demand.  Good luck on your search....

WITB? Ping G400 SFT w/Aldila Mamba shaft R flex; Ping G410 3w; Ping G400 3h(19), 4h(22), 5h(26); TaylorMade SLDR 5i (interchanges w/5h)-PW -stock graphite shafts Rflex; INDI FLX-S wedges (50, 54, 58) w/Recoil graphite shafts -Rflex and Odyssey AI-One 7T BD Milled (aka Millie), ball choice tends to be Pro-V1 or simliar 3pc urethane balls.
