Pocket Bunker - Pocket Review

So, after a long delay for no good reason, I finally fooled around with these yesterday at the range and in a practice bunker at same. (Not much of a bunker, by the way.)
They're kind of a cool toy to play with. Can't decide yet if I think they're a great bunker aid, but time will tell, right?
Probably hard to see from the pictures, but back of the box shows the results from thin, good, and fat shots. I would say those are accurate. When you strike the shot properly, you get good backspin, and kind of the same "whirr" sound that a range ball with a mower cut makes when you send it on its way. Because of the legs, you can really see the spin. When you hit it thin, (of COURSE I did...) they will fly a long ways. Beware!
I'll keep working with these, (you don't need a bunker, that's probably the coolest part) and let you know if my sand game gets any better as a result. It can't get any worse, unfortunately.

Since I'm not watching any Supba Bow hype today It's nice to see someone else is thinking golf. Not sure I'd have had the guts to try these but I'm glad you did Blue. Let us know how they work out or not for you.

Lord knows Ii need some bunker time practice. The ones at my course are so inconsistent.

I agree with PlaidJacket that it is nice to see someone not watching the hype leading up to the Super Bowl and focusing on golf

Having said that I am a pretty good bunker player, get it on the green 9 out of 10 times BUT half the time two putt from there.

This product is intriguing and I must say I may get it to play around with.

MGoBlue - thanks for posting this. Around last Christmas I'd made a (large) donation to a friend's worthwhile cause and somehow saw this product on Indiegogo.

 

I also very badly *suck* out of bunkers and figured I give this a try (and help support a golf-related startup, why not).

 

Been practicing with it indoors in my garage "studio" and cannot say definitively yet but I do think this is going to help!

Quick update:

This is helping! Still suck out of the bunkers but played a few rounds last week, and practiced one day earlier this week, and I got a few balls out OK (first try) vs. once in a blue moon......

Also, how far does the pocket bunker fly after you hit your shot? I'm concerned that this will fly maybe 5-10 yds down the driving range and don't want to look like a fool stepping onto the driving range to fetch this when other people are hitting.

I see this as an at-home type of training aid. I'd have a hard time busting it out on the range but am eager to see if you've experienced success using it.

 

For my bunker play, I found that practicing flop shots out of tight lies and fluffy rough provide really good bunker practice if you don't have a practice bunker at your course.

It will only travel a short distance - say 10 yds/mtrs - if you thin it. Idea is to hit it on the legs to simulate taking out sand from under the ball.

 

Haven't spent enough time with this but any practice helps and I believe it's helped me get out of bunkers. I still suck at it but at least have been .. mostly .. getting out on the first try...!

The tight lie teaches you how to take a shallow divot to get spin on the ball out of the bunker. Then you can push it into deep rough and flop those for practice thumping balls out of the bunker when required.

They will fly quite a ways if you blade them; wouldn't recommend use at the regular range. They do work cool out of a practice bunker though!!

Yeah, not really for the range. Good in the backyard (if you have one) or into the garage practice net (if you have one) or really in most any open field.

 

Like MGoBlue said, it .. usually! .. won't fly too far so you don't need a large area. You really just want to practice hitting the thing in the right spot so it pops up; ie. simulate hitting over a lip.

I need one of these - bunker shots are the only ones that I rarely ever have the ability to practice.

Most public ranges don't have one and I'm not a member anywhere.

Other choice would be to dig a hole in my yard and dump some sand in it but SWMBO might not be pleased....

Mr short game on YouTube did a review a couple of weeks ago. It is an interesting concept would be interesting to try one.
