2017 Most Wanted Driver

Recommended Posts

It was "low" but look at the numbers, they're almost identical!

Srixon Z565: club speed (99.5), ball speed (140.3), launch (14.7), spin (2244), carry (233.6), total (249)

Cobra F7+ : Club speed (99.1) ball speed (140.0), Launch (15.2), Spin (2354), carry (233.6), total (247.9)

-

As a admitted Cobra fan, While Cobra did finish 9th overall, as Dang3rtown mentioned, the only real difference between the #9 F7+ and the #1 z565 was 1.1 yards (or 3 feet 1 1/4 inches)

Am happy to see Srixon do so well, and it looks like their strategy of Srixon being the woods and irons and Cleveland focusing on short game is working well for them.

Hoping to see if there's any type of s*** fit by the other (read OEM sponsored) golf media outlets about this like there was with the 1st Costco golf ball. Likely not, but good to see that the more "GI" driver outperformed the more "player" driver.

I was a little surprised but not too much. There appears to be not too much separating the clubs at the top--I could see any one of them coming out on top on a given day.

A couple on notes:

Nice to see the Ping SF Tec got tested as it is geared toward higher handicaps. I got the G30 version this year. Looks like it had the tightest dispersion--which is the main reason I got it.

Nice to see Wilson in the mix for testing. Curious why some of the other challenger brands like Bridgestone didn't get tested--guessing they decided not to submit a club for testing?

I also have to admit that I am not too familiar with Airforce One. Anyone gaming one of these?

It's getting to the point you just pick what looks the best and feels the best when swinging

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Although this list will alter your view too. I was/am interested in the 917 and since it's near the bottom.. I don't know.. That extra yard or three might make a difference, lol...

Maybe a bit surprising, Srixon winning but the Ms and Epic being in top 5 you'd expect of their marketing was correct (seems like it was) read something yesterday about John Daly using a driver with Vertical Grooves, what's that all about?

HOLD EVERYTHING!!!

I just realized this test is invalid, and the result is purely IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

There is no way, NO WAY, that the Srixon could have finished so highly. There's one thing we all forgot about, that I can't believe we overlooked, but we may actually have to take back the crown.

There's no way the Most Wanted Driver of 2017 could have gotten a SILVER medal from Golf Digest's Hot List. A SILVER MEDAL??? Clearly MGS is crazy to have awarded their most wanted blade putter, mallet putter and driver to ALL silver medal winners.

This is insanity people! Shut it down!!!! :D

Silver is the new Gold?

MyGolfSpy got a shoutout from the Morning Read today.

http://www.morningread.com/releases/f523bd4b-3794-4ca2-b4e5-c73b9ba88635

To commemorate this honor, Srixon has collaborated with PROJECT X for a limited-time offer: No Upcharge on Tour Authentic HZRDUS Hand Crafted shafts when purchasing a Z 565 driver from now until Monday, May 31, 2017. Click here for more information on this offer.

Congratulations to Srixon and MyGolfSpy!!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

I've read about it and watched YouTube videos about it but I'm still sceptical. In my mind, having grooves like that and any sort of side to side motion when coming through the ball would put a massive amount of sidespin compared to a driver with horizontal grooves.

This is part of the reason so many OEM's are offering great shafts for a no-charge upgrade. They want to differentiate themselves. To take advantage though, you have to go to a reputable fitter

At a fitting last year I swung all the 2016 models by being able to switch out the shaft. Ping and Taylormade were very close on the data. The titleist driver was the only one that the number varied noticeably different and you have to grove it every time. That was the big eye opener for me was that all the drivers were pretty consistent when hit square on the nose but where you saw differences was in slight mishits. I am extremely happy with the M2 I got and it was based on mishits and feel (pretty much = to the Ping driver but it didn't feel as good).

The best players who hit it the center can play with anything and even a tobacco stick... I need a lil forgiveness every now and again.

... I have always read MGS data with skepticism concerning a purchase for myself. Not that it isn't valid, because they are the best at independent reviews of any given club and I always enjoy the reviews. But getting a huge cross section of players doesn't really do any one individual any good. Are the toe hits happening with a positive aoa and a closing face with a higher swing speed or a negative aka and an opening face with a slower swing speed? Differences in ball flight and distance are pretty dramatic.

... My son and I both play a Fly Z driver. I carry the ball about 240-250 and he carries it 290-300. I have a Rogue Black 60 stiff flex in my driver at 10.5* and I installed a Nunchuk in his at 9*. With his combo I am shorter although a hair more accurate and a slightly lower ball flight. With my combo he is all over the place and hits it way too high. If you took a cross section of our combined data with each others club it would be vastly different than the individual stats using a shaft and head setting that fit our swings.

... The only reviews that get my attention are those form someone with around 100mph swing speed and a smooth transition that produces a mid high flight and around 2300 spin. Even someone with a 100 mph swing and smooth transition and a negative aoa producing 3200 spin is of no value to me.

In previous years, MGS did follow on Most Wanted Drivers where they broke it down by golfers in different swing speed categories. I'm hoping they do the same again this year.

i wouldn't discount it based on that. As mentioned they are all very good drivers.  In addition you've seen me hit some of my better drives this year than I have in the past year or two.  of course the bad ones are my fault and would have been bad with a 760 CC head driver..HA

Most don't seem to.   I wonder if that will change at least in the case of the driver.   I think we need to order at least one Demo Driver for our Pro Shop.   Thinking 9.5  in Stiff flex for some odd reason  :D

Grooves on drivers are basically for looks. They serve no real purpose. So being vertical should do nothing to assist or hurt you.
