Callaway Enters "premium" market with Epic irons?!

Recommended Posts

Nice write up on the blog about these Epic irons. What is the general consensus here? $250 an iron for these spaceships? Personally I think they are hideous looking. No I won't be changing my mind this time like I did with the JP wedges. What performance could you possibly gain over the Steelhead...? A yard or 2?

Thoughts?

My own opinion is it's hard to justify the price. Not when there are so many other great sets out there for far less. However I'm likely not their target market.

I'm sure they are great Irons, but they remind me a lot of the TM M1/M2 irons.

Seems a lot more manufacturers are getting at least one set of premium clubs out there.

All in all I have to agree with you, I'd be surprised if the performance was that much greater then any of their current offerings, but I guess we will have to wait and see what the review shows when it comes along.

Yeah, the price is outrageous but it is nice to see companies still innovating in new ways. For me more distance with my irons isn't a selling point, but if they do a better job of retaining distance on off center hits then it might be interesting. I've heard from someone that they did a quality job on the feel and sound of these irons as well. It will be interesting to see how they do if the reviews are as positive as those of the EPIC driver were. I just can't spend that much on a set of irons plus I love the forged feel of my AP2s.

There is always a market for premium irons like these, I'm not one of them, but they're out there. I agree with you on the looks, these are not appealing at all, IMO. Curious to see how they perform though.

If people are willing to pay, then manufacturers will build it. There is a market for it with those that have a higher level of disposable income that may not know pxg but do know the name Callaway. I prefer a cleaner look to my irons, which is why I like the Mizuno and Titleist lines so much.

not the target market either but that's ok.  people will buy them and some of them will see improvement in their game.  I am ok with that and wont get mad at Callaway or people who buy them.

I actually like the looks of them

It's like the new Ford GT Supercar.... if all you can afford is a Focus that's great, but if you can get a GT then why not !!  At least PXG has some comp now.

Would've been kind of cool to see them have some super-funky shaft that is only available with the irons.  Outside of the price they're not all that different on the outside.  Too bad, I think PXG has them there.

It'd be funny as hell if the USGA came along later and outlawed the tech that they added on the inside.  I'd be pissed if I just paid 2k+ for a set of sticks that I can't use in a tourney!

Ha!  Who needs it.... if you drive a car like that you better have your own locker at one of the super-ritzy clubs you belong to and they better keep your sticks in tip top condition and ready to go as soon as you drive up.

But what if I wanted to drive over to another ritzy club down the road? I guess I could put a carrier on top of it then throw my club in that... 😂😂😂😂

Here is my plan. Gonna buy the Epic irons; then purchase PXG gap and sand wedges at $600 each; then put them in the den next to the $100 book on the history of Ping. This way I can sit and stare at all these great purchases, because I will not be able to afdord to play any more. Nah, won't be considering the Epics.

I'm sure they're a great iron but really... $2000 USD for irons that are not fitted? To me that's ridiculous.. How can they say that these are the best if they aren't fitted to the golfer using them? anyone willing to spend this kind of money wants a customized fit for them.

To me it makes no sense at that price point with out the fitting included.

Why can't you get fit for these clubs?? Who said you can't? I'm sure if I'm buying them they will make them to my specs, right??

I understand why they're doing it, but I think it's funny they talk about weighting each club when that's supposedly done on all of their current models. I just can't see paying a major OEM that has wide tolerances big money for a club. I'd trust the PXGs, Miuras, to do this instead. I KNOW I'm getting a club built to the correct specs. Can't blame em for trying

If this were a racing forum, enthusiasts would most likely convey the timing and price point of this iron release as "epic drafting skills".

I like Callaway irons however if I were in the buying mode, the Steelhead XRs would be the ones I would consider.  I'm still trying to decide if I like the looks of their high priced brothers.  They're almost pretty however ugly enough to throw me off a bit.  I know there are people out there who would gladly chunk out a couple of grand for something new, different, and shiny however I'm not one of em.  If that's what ya into, knock ya jock off and run pick up a set. I'll be interested to see how sales accumulate on these bad boys.

Call me a traditionalist or whatever. But nothing looks better than a set of chrome blade(like) clubs with minimal branding, that Srixon Driver.. you know the one that won most wanted with its plain crown, and a blade putter. Gizmos and gadgets could be cool. But they over do it sometimes. A blade iron is a time tested piece of consistency that will give you back what you put in.

Bravo for trying though.
