giving serious consideration to swapping out my 4 iron (24*) with a 7 or 9 wood. I hit my 4 fine but the trajectory is a little low and I'd like to get the ball to stop a little quicker on approach shots.

In perusing the thread seems like Ping is a very popular model. I have a g400 hybrid I picked up cheap over the winter and it's been pretty good; this is probably closer to the 7 wood.

Anyone have one they're absolutely in love with? Anyone using a 9 wood?

I have the Ping 425 7 wood and if I had room for it I would add the matching 9. The more I play the 7 wood the more I like it when others go around I go over which is especially satisfying when they made fun of me for carrying a 7 wood. The height and decent angle is the deal breaker , I am not quite as accurate with it as an iron yet but if I get to that point I will pull an iron and add the 9 wood.

Ditch both the 4 and the 5 irons, and get a 7 and a 9 wood- then you can be an official old fart like me haha.

but seriously for a moment, think about it- can you hit your 4 or 5 iron with enough spin and descent angle to hold a hard green? Are they fairly easy to hit?

they kind of slot in to your iron rotation, and suddenly you’re pretty strong all the way up to your 3 wood.

it has really fixed a tough hole for me after the 6 iron.

Honestly, I could have gone this route 7 years ago. It’s crazy to watch a 9-wood go higher than anything in your bag, 170-180, then drop and stop on a concrete green. Plus you can get them with whatever shaft etc… mine is a callaway paradym (para-nine). My 5 and 7 woods are epics- anyways- good luck

I just ordered new irons 6-GW and had the discussion with my fitter regarding whether to include a 5i. I stopped hitting my 5 a couple years ago but recently pulled it out and can still hit it with a lot of work.  But the problem with a 5 or 4i is that as we get older we don’t generate the ball speed necessary to get the desired carry.  So I’m opting to go 5h and 7w.  Maybe a 5w later on. The longest club I presently hit is a 4h and when I tested a Ping G430 5h a few weeks ago, I was getting 10 yards further carry than my current/ancient 4h.  I find hitting a hybrid to be pretty easy, and learned years ago to treat it like an iron.

I made a costly mistake when Ping lowered the price of the G425 clubs. I assumed the Distanza shaft would work as well in a 3W,5W, 4&5 hybrid as it did in my driver. Not even close.

ebay saved me (and very cheaply, I might add). A seller had/has the original Stealth 5 hybrid and 3HL and 7W in LH  with the Ventus Red shaft in A flex brand new. The hybrid was $99  and the two FWs were $139 each.

The G425’s will either be sold or saved until this 69yo body loses even more swing speed.

I have gone for a much more old man golf bag (although still with regular shafts, not senior shafts).  Have a 7 wood and 25 degree (five iron substitute), 28 degree (for 6 iron) and 31 degree (for 7 iron) hybrids.  Have had the 25 degree hybrid for a while and the 7 wood for a year and a half, but just got the 6 and 7 hybrids late last year.  For the three newer clubs, I love the way the ball gets up in the air.  My course has a couple of holes where I have to get the ball over water (one a par five and one a very long par four) from a downhill lie.  The 7 wood is much better than my 5 wood or than the 21 degree hybrid I replaced it with at getting the ball up in the air.  It is also great from thick rough.

Love them.

I hook the hell out of Hybrids. I love them, love the idea of them, and if you get along with them, by all means, put as many hybrids in the bag as you can! Gapping is everything at the top of your bag (whole bag really)! But, high lofted 5 woods, or a 7-wood is a must try if you hook hybrids, or they just don’t fit your eye. I went 46/52/58 in my wedges, ditched my 21* hybrid and added an 18* and 21* FW and never looked back.

I have the Callaway Paradym X 7W which is my 210 yd. club which I seem to hit better than any other hybrid so its the club I'm sticking with for 2024. I did play the G425 PING 7W which was nice but went with Callaway since all of my woods are Callaway.

Same gapping of my 7W, but I game the AJ Max from Cobra. It’s prob the most fun club to hit in my bag!

I've been carrying a Cobra King SZ 7 wood in the bag for the past 4-5 years.  I like the height and control it offers when I'm about 165 - 180 yards out.

Hey all!

I need a bit of help with something. We are seeing a lot of 7 woods pop up and I would love to get some insights from the community. I have made a quick poll above and if you could take the 30 seconds to answer the questions it would be great!

I just got a Maltby KE4 TC Pro 7 Wood and love it. I had a 5 wood but just wasn't getting out of it what I wanted/needed. I will say, I'm a huge advocate for hybrids over woods but I think the 7 wood will be just what I need for height and stopping power while still in that 220+ range.

I put a 7 wood in my bag about two months ago and it’s my go to club for short par 4s or if I have a chance to reach the green in 2 on a Par 5. It’s incredibly forgiving and easy to hit off the fairway or out of the rough. I also really enjoy it as a good fairway finder when my driver isn’t working for me.

The club numbers on the bottom don't mean what they used to mean.

My new seven wood is about 21°, and that was a 5-wood decades ago.

My new nine-wood is about 24º, and that was a 7-wood decades ago.

My personal preference is fairway woods over hybrids, but I do play a  driving iron on tight driving holes that I don't try to hit from the fairways.

The original copper orange colored TaylorMade rescues, titanium heads as I recall, just weren't hittable for me, and I never gave more modern variations a real chance.  Given their popularity, I'm sure they must be good, though.

I’m at the beach this week, and going to hit some of the golf stores down here. 7 wood or wedges are on top of my want list. I would like a g430, but hope I find something used I can hit well.

I did find something that for me I hit really well a Titleist tsr2 7 wood. I had taken all the fairway woods completely out of the bag. Couldn’t hit them. Now I have a 5 hybrid and a 7 wood.

I have used a 7-wood in the past and loved it. Since I have out grown that club as a player (the shaft was way too weak for my current swing speed), I have drifted more towards utility irons instead. I have tried different ones out, but they just don't do what I want them to. I usually prefer fairway woods to longer irons, but I have found the utility irons fit better with my game right now.

I've spent a lot of time looking at 7 woods and hybrids lately. Currently play a 4-wood and FliHi 3i but there are times I'd rather be hitting something different into par 5s or long par 4s than a long iron.

Absolutely. And it varies from brand to brand. It's all preferences/fitting of course. I will say, I think the length of woods is detrimental compared to hybrids. I shortened my 7 wood because it's more in line with those hybrids.

Boy, do I love the look of that copper. It was almost impossible to pass them up.

I’ve thought about the idea of a 7wood. I just don’t know where it would fall in my bag. I currently play a M4 4-hybrid (22°), Wilson staff c300 hybrid set at 19° and an old Nike Covert 3-wood.

Currently gaming

PXG 0311 gen 5 drive, PXG 0211’s, Wilson 4 hybrid, Nike covert 3 wood, Volkey SM4 wedges, odyssey O-works blade putter

Now that the season is starting in earnest, reviving this thread...

giving serious consideration to swapping out my 4 iron (24*) with a 7 or 9 wood.

I Play on a consistent basis - Driver, 5 wood and 9 wood (all Stealth), with irons from 6-9
i did have a 7 wood but for my gapping it did not quite fit the bag correctly
What I loved about the 7 is the same thing I love about the 9 - I can actually hit higher. I am normally a lower launch with 3 and 5 wood, but the 7 and 9 both get me to a better height and some much needed stopping power
I am not sure what the actual "normal" numbers are for a 9 wood but I carry mine (indoor Trackman) basically 205, but it comes in much steeper and I can actually hit the Par 5's with a better angle than I could my 4 and 5 irons
I can keep it a lower if needed, but I that is the one area that it lacks for me, it is def harder to keeper lower

I def think a 9 is something to check out - just my 2 cents

Highest "wood" in my bag right now is my TS3 5 wood 18*. Love this club and honestly, if my hybrid doesn't start showing me some love, I am very, VERY much in the market for a 7 wood head to go along with the 5 wood. Just need to run this past the purchasing committee first. Haha.

I've spent a lot of time looking at 7 woods and hybrids lately. Currently play a 4-wood and FliHi 3i but there are times I'd rather be hitting something different into par 5s or long par 4s than a long iron.

Try a fitted hybrid for the distance gap.  It will be easier to swing than the longer 7 wood.  More consistent and covers the same distance if you have the right shaft in it.

I picked up a 7 wood this season, and so far I'm thrilled with it! As of now, it's replaced my 4-iron, however, I'm considering putting the 4-iron back in my bag and taking out my hybrid because of how easy the 7-wood is to hit. I currently carry Driver, 3-wood (15.5 degrees), 7-wood (20 degrees), and a hybrid, but find myself barely touching the hybrid due to the consistency I get from my 7-wood.
