Here you go folks; best band in the land, now entering their 56th year together, although a couple of their original members, including two of my dear friends who appear in this video, Francis "Rocco" Prestia on bass and Mic Gillette on trumpet, trombone and vocals, have passed away since this video was shot.  That man out front on vocals is another great friend of mine, Larry "LB" Braggs, who also sang with The Temptations

Quick flashback to the western part of our discussion.  Wyatt Earp is an all-time favorite in the Smalls family, with Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday as being one of my favorite characters of all folklore.  So I had an idea, why not combine my love of all things Clemson, golf and Doc wrapped into one image.  I wanted to do a little photoshop work but I thought I'd give AI a shot to see what it would come up with.  It took a little wordsmithing to get a prompt to align with the design language but I'd say the results are pretty solid!  Here are my two favorites:

... Phoenix is just heaven on Earth all fall/winter/spring. Summers are usually a challenge but this summer was just insane:

Last month set and broke heat record after heat record nearly every day since July 8. According to the weather service:

● The average maximum temperature in July was 114.7 degrees.

● The average minimum temperature was 90.8.

● Every day in July had above-normal temperatures.

● Only one day in July had a high temperature below 110 degrees.

● July set a new all-time record for the most consecutive days with high temperatures at or above 110 degrees (31 days) from June 30 to July 30.

● 17 days in July hit maximum temperatures at or above 115 degrees, breaking the record of six days set in 2020.

● July set a new all-time record warm low temperature of 97 degrees.

● Three days in July reached 119 degrees.

● Twelve days in July broke or tied daily high temperature records.

● Sixteen days in July broke or tied daily warm low temperature records.

● The longest stretch of days under an excessive heat warning was set from July 1 to July 29, nearly quadrupling the number of days from the previous record, which was eight days.

Sam, this is a little "off-topic" from the western or music themes, but I had a question on the Lamkin Hybrid grips you use.

How have they held up on the days where it not only has been hot, but also the humid days out there?

Contemplating a change from MCC's for myself, but was looking for some input prior to a least getting one to switch with.

... There is no such thing as "off topic" in the Saloon, especially anything related to golf. 👍  Humid days out here are 50% max but usually 8% to 25% depending on the season. I don't use a glove so I need a very secure grip. I imagine in higher humidity without a glove the Hybrid ST+ might not be as secure. I played them in light rain last winter and they got a little slippery but completely secure with a glove. The upside is the material is crazy durable and last much longer than previous grips I have used.

It almost threw me off seeing the new profile pic. I guess seeing the Clemson logo for so long was what did it. The two other photos you have up there are awesome!

Speaking of playing gloveless, I put on one of the well worn Sussex gloves end of last week as the Range Rooster was getting worn and a club had turned in my grip.  The still fresh Sussex was safely in the vehicle and I noticed after done for the day the back of my glove hand was looking like it had a rash.  I put a hand cream on it which doesn't seem to be the right thing, cortizone will be next.  So to make play today tolerable I went without a glove, first time for going gloveless since I learned to golf when I turned 50.  And after a few cautious and concerning swing/hits that made it certain I needed to grip the club tighter, my front 9 was a 48  which is good on a good day and the back 9 came in at a 43 for a 91 for the day, a lower score for me and 3 under handicap.  I noticed my calouses were feeling enhanced which is a minor discomfort but now I know when a glove is not something I can wear it does not at all prevent me from having a good round.  That's all and thanks for reading my somewhat rambling tale of today in Derek's golfland. ⛳

... I gotta figure there are some Saloon Dad (or Mom), kids, sports stories to share.

There are. I have coached a handful of soccer teams for each of my daughters over the past 5 years, and while there have been good times and bad, aggravating parents, and adorably bad players, all of it is pretty standard stuff and admittedly unremarkable.

So when my oldest daughter asked to play basketball last winter, I encouraged her to do so, as I think the best athletes are ones that play multiple sports and develop well rounded skills. About 2 weeks prior to the season starting, we got the predictable email, asking for volunteers to be the head coach. I ignored it and a week later we got the email telling us that if no one volunteered, there would be no team. Even though my last experience with team basketball was in the 8th grade 30 years prior, I found myself as the newly minted head coach of a 4th grade girls basketball team.

At our first practice, the reality of what I had gotten myself into sank in. We had 7 girls on the team. 3 of which had played organized ball. The other 4, daughter included, were starting from scratch. I scrapped any plans I had for set plays, defense schemes, etc. and spent 3 straight weeks teaching girls how to shoot, pass, and dribble. We were well into the season before we attempted to learn an inbounds play or boxing out for rebounds.

Our first game, we played a team that was well organized and well coached. The game finished with us losing 33-4. We celebrated the moral victory of keeping the spread less than 30. Looking back, the highlight of the game for us was having 2 girls, daughter included, foul out half way through the 2nd half. I suspect the refs stopped calling fouls on us after that, as we had no more subs left.

Having 7 girls for 5 spots meant everyone got to play a lot and would have worked out good until one girl left for Christmas break and didn’t return. Apparently her family was from an undisclosed Eastern European country. They traveled back to the old country for Christmas and decided to stay, so we were down to 6 girls for 5 spots. Winters in Ohio are good for random illness, so we had a run of 4 straight games with no subs and the 5 that showed up played the entire games.

Throughout all of the adversity, the girls showed remarkable resilience and a desire to improve, so entering the end of season tournament we were 4-6 and grouped into a bracket with the other teams from around the area with similar records. That team that got dusted by 29 on opening night rattled off three straight victories over a weekend at the end of February and lifted their bracket’s championship. They were one of only 2 teams from the Little Miami Youth Basketball Association to win their tournament bracket and be crowned end of season champions. Not too shabby for 6 determined little girls and their coach, who had the good sense to teach them the fundamentals and then get the hell out of their way. 😊

Thank you for your input! 😎 I too usually play gloveless, but may have to look into one for humid, wetter days.

You want a glove for hot humid conditions. Try the Mokom Glove. I still use the one I purchased 2 years ago. I only use it in July and August. Good grip and excellent ventilation.

I did an un-official review back then.

It almost threw me off seeing the new profile pic. I guess seeing the Clemson logo for so long was what did it. The two other photos you have up there are awesome!

It's been up for a while so I thought I would freshen things up a bit. I'll change it a few more times to keep you on your toes 😏. Thank you!  The little hamsters running in the machines at openai made them. I really like the first one. I may utilize it a little more.

I use a different browser for getting on the forum. The one I use is on Android and it's Adblock Browser. I don't get any ads on here. I'm not sure if it's available on Apple phones, but I know it works.
