This post is purely for my own mental wellbeing.

No score to post but I thought I would share a small achievement.

After being rushed into hospital on the 23rd July with a blocked bile duct and acute kidney injury, i was discharged under observation for the last 2 weeks only to be diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo  (BPPV), this is a bummer you walk like a drunk without having the fun of the alcohol. Joking aside the BPPV makes it really difficult to walk never mind swing a club. Today my wife took me out in a cart and managed 14 holes and shot +6 with a triple on the 2nd. I think having to keep my head still might have helped. After 4 weeks of illness, a bit of anxiety about recovery and been stuck in the house, I think there is an end in sight.

For the last 25 years, I took for granted being able to golf 3 or 4 times a week and at short notice pop out and play any of the local courses. This brings it home that live for the day you don't know what's round the corner.

So glad to hear you have a positive outlook Alf.  I hope the final bit of recovery is a quick one.  You comment about not taking life for granted has been driven home to me more this past year than any other time of my life.  And this is another example of being given a sign... now it is up to me to choose to respond to that sign and change my life for the better.  Thank you for the post of hope and inspiration Alf.

So so round, fairways staying wet with little roll with the daily pop up showers.  Glad my putting and chipping were up to the task, or this could have been a bigger number.

Not a bad outing for the Captain of Team Questionable Judgement. Looking forward to trying again to break par using the most far fetched strategies I can drum up on the spot. As they say, practice makes perfect.

Getting warmed up for the Match Play Tournament in a few weeks with a trip to Massachusetts to visit family and friends.  Of course I brought my sticks and a buddy and I played Butter Brook aGolf Club in Westford, MA.  It was a very nice track.  The front had three par3’s, 3 par 4’s and three par 5’s.  Neither of us had played it before and were pleasantly surprised.  I had a solid round.  I hit 77% of the fairways, 17% greens in regulation and 28 putts with no three putts.  I’d forgotten what it’s like having soft, receptive green.
I got a nice complement after my 18th hole drive split the fairway (yet only 175 yards long).  Another guy in our foursome said “Do you EVER miss a fairway?!”  My response was “Not many, that’s why the guys I play with call me F***ing Norm!”

After consultation w She Who Must Be Obeyed I joined Elmwood. I spend a lot of time on the road in central and eastern Iowa, and they have reciprocal agreements w a number of other courses in that part of the state so I figure why not. Their year RINs July thru June so I’ve got lots of time to figure out if I can get my moneys worth.

Tough day during this qualifier 😪 made a double on a par five (fifth hole). Tried to chase birdies after that and went the wrong direction.

The greens were punched so that affected play. Hit 15 greens and had 29 putts. Six birdies and an eagle on a par 4. However, had 1 double and 2 bogeys. Not a bad day!

Tough day during this qualifier 😪 made a double on a par five (fifth hole). Tried to chase birdies after that and went the wrong direction.

Played this afternoon after work.

Rained here quite heavily yesterday, so the course had standing water and puddles in the low-lying areas.

Played with a father and son, and for the most part I played "boring" golf.

Fairways and greens.

Missed 3 greens, and they all led to bogies, similar to my last round, hit my 6 iron to back pins which I thought were correct distances, and ended up over the back. Bad thing, greens sloped from back to front.

Had 1 natural birdie on the 13th hole a 588-yard par 5 from the whites. Hit driver, utility wood, and gap wedge and made the putt.

Longest drive was 260.

Other commitments make this the only round I can get in this week, but I spent time at the range earlier in the week.

Double Eagle Day! No, I didn’t have a double eagle, but did have 2 eagles.

I would love to say that I struck the ball well, that my new backswing move was the answer to a maiden’s prayers. Nope, sadly I would get to the top and then didn’t know what to do. I spayed the ball all over the course and had a mediocre day putting. The stats look decent, especially the number of putts, but that’s because the only club I hit consistently well was the 58° wedge. 10 of those first putts were inside 4’

Now for the good stuff. The eagles.

On 3, I laid up to 53 yards in the fairway with my second shot and hit a perfect pitch. As soon as I hit it, I knew it was just what I wanted. I was a little below the green and could see the flag, but not the hole. I thought it would be close to the hole and then it disappeared. I normally lay up on the hole because the green is long and narrow and has 2 grass bunkers and 2 sand bunkers and 3 moguls around it. I birdie more often when laying up.

Then on 15, after a fabulous drive into the trees on the right, I was 232 yards from the green with no clear line of sight to the green. My plan, out of desperation, was to hit a high cut with the Driver Off The Deck and get it close to the green. I caught it low on the heel and it started 40 yards left of the green cut back. I didn’t see it other than see that it was going similar to where I wanted. I put my driver in the bag and turned to look at another player who was in the fairway and he was staring at me with a shocked look on his face. I cannot quote him because the sensors would have a fit, but he said it went in. He was also standing on the green on 3.

Then on 16, he was once again standing on the green when my bunker shot hit the flagstick but bounced off and rolled back. He mentioned that Finally I hit a flagstick and didn’t go in the hole.

Yes. And since both are listed as stroke holes I had 2 net 1’s. When you subtract the -6 net from the -9 net birdies, I didn’t have a very good round. I had 2 eagles and only lost $4 for the day.

I’m working on the full swing right now.

Hole 3 was just like I planned it. Hole 15 was a fluke. Sure, I hit DOD just like I did on hole 14 because it will always cut. I could aim for OB left and pound the ball and know it will come back to the right. But it was 107° at tee time, the fairways and greens are like concrete, I mishit the DOD and had a ton of top spin. Normally there is a muddy area in front of that green but now dry and I was told it ran through it and up a 10° slope.

But I will take it.

Considering I only missed my handicap by 2 strokes, the round felt worse than the scorecard indicated. Having (3) holes with more than 2 putts doesn't help either. Getting a GiR and then 4 putting on hole 5 definitely stung. Back 9 came together pretty good though.
