Rolled a few putts with the double wide yesterday; only one out of the plastic.  Callaway is into blue this year; nicer blue than the Mizuno in my opinion.   The clear plastic pice behind the face is interesting since it lets you see the contours behind the insert.

General impression: looks nice,  soft feel, difficult to identifying miss hits.  People are going to say it works the same as every other putter and AI is overblown.    Honestly kind of my thought.

It's interesting and the added "forgiveness " will help quite a bit. I haven't ever put an Odyssey in the bag just because I wasn't too big on the feel off the face but will be looking for the illusive lefty to test out in the stores.

Taken this long to use AI to design a putter insert?  Or design a face that intentionally manipulates ball speed across the face?

other than the use of the AI buzzword, is the outcome really any different than Evnroll, Bobby Grace, or Ping TR grooves?

This release intrigues me. I’ve had an Evnroll putter in my bag for about 7 years now. I am very curious as to how the face technologies compare. From an aesthetics point of view I appreciate the milled versions more. Not a fan of the window on the Ai-One models. It would be fine on a demo version but not sure about it on my gamer. I’m a mallet player and like the looks of Ai-One Milled Eight but would prefer it have a Double Bend shaft. Hopefully this version will be released down the road. The Ai-One Milled Eleven DB does have a shape similar to my ER11v though so that will get a try when these arrive in stores. I also really like the looks of the blue finish paired up with “gold” titanium insert.

So I got onto Golf Galaxy to look at pricing and different options and customizations. I noticed on there that the new stock shaft is a steel shaft, not the graphite steel that they did before. Now if you want the upgraded graphite, steel shaft, it is a $50 up charge they say it is to help with the balance of the club but I feel like it is a way to save costs.

Pretty sure there is research from Dr. Sasho Mackenzie that effect on speed/distance of impact location on putter is minor that he discussed on some of the golf podcast circuit visits he did, which was a large surprise to me. These putters brought that up in my mind. His general conclusion was to avoid practicing impact location and work on speed/start line instead unless you plan to practice many hours per week on putting. And even in that case, there would be other golf skills that would benefit your game more than getting your impact location as close to centre of putter everytime.

Should be enough putters on the market now for an MGS robot test striking the ball across the clubface and see how much distance is lost on various inserts, vs flat milled and different milled groove putters.

can be as much as 20% loss of ball speed.

not significant for short putts but as distance increases, which is when off center becomes more common, you miss by a lot.

Interesting study, especially with all the different face inserts. I saw the worst reported loss as 14% on a blade and average of 10%, not 20% however (that was a comparison of the "fastest" putter hit out of the middle vs the putter with the largest drop on a low heal miss). The heel and toe miss are 2cm or over 3/4" of an inch each side of center which is a pretty big contact patch at 1.5" wide. Not sure what skill level that would correlate to for an "average" putter.

This was why I gave up on heads up putting, after I fatted a 60' lag putt I figured there was no possible benefit that could offset the occasional miss like that.

Based on data captured by Dave Pelz; in the putting bible, here is the miss pattern by handicap. It seems to get wide pretty quickly .

Hard to tell scale, but to my eye looks like 1.5" wide spread begins around 22 index. Maybe an odd one after 12. But there also appears to be 30 index players that have less than 1.5" lateral dispersion.

Callaway is using a 15 point face map according to their promo material, would be interesting to see the details on the distance that covers across the face. If it is 2+ inches wide, there's limited benefit to be gained in real life off the number of balls hit on the edge of the insert for most players. Also interesting the distance variation is much less in the insert model vs milled version putter.

"*Ai-ONE Urethane delivers putts up to 21% closer to the hole from 32’ and Ai-ONE Milled up to 7% closer compared to a Scotty Cameron® Super Select Newport 2.
Based on robot testing with a 15 point face map."

Got to demo pretty much the full line this week with the rep.

I definitely liked the White Hot insert better than the Milled.  The Milled was a firm hard feeling much like my Scotty Cameron, which I don't hate.  But just fell in love wit the insert feel which I had on one of the original White Hots way back in the day.   Was torn between the Rosisie and #7 which are my two favorite styles.   Decided on the Rossie as it's close to the SC 1.5 Flowback that I've been playng most of the year.

Would love to try this, along with the Spider Proto (aka Scottie's Spider) - color me intrigued!

Interesting feedback @Golfspy_CG2 - I prefer the feel of a milled putter but would be curious how this new insert process feels.🤔

Yeah, maybe it's a case of I didn't know what I was "missing" as I've used a Milled putter for the last two years at least.   Then to feel the softness of the insert was so different that I just took to it.

Quick question for you…

Does the White Hot seem more forgiving or is the forgiveness about the same but it’s just feels more solid. Just curious. I need to try these out.

To me it actually does feel more forgiving.  I'm sure Odyssey says they are equal.  But maybe it's a psychological thing with the softer feel feeling more forgiving.   I would definitely encourage you to try them out if you can.

The other question with the plots is how far was the putt.  As putts get longer I would think the variation would become larger.  Odyssey is using a 32’ putt and a robot.   I wonder what the dispersion difference would be with humans making the putts. .

During my 30 minutes or so wfh then on the putting green. I tried everything from 3 footers to 90 footers and I between.   Almost sank a 60 footer.  But the distance control on the long ones once I got used to fbd insert face were very good.

I went to the PGATSS and spent about 20 mins putting with 3-4 of the new AI putters.  I wanted to be impressed, but sadly was not.  They are gorgeous.  But I felt no difference in my putting as compared to my usual wand; if anything, my accuracy was poorer, as was distance control.  I did find the White Hot insert more forgiving and more consistent than the milled face, which I found interesting since my gamer putter has a milled face and it is more consistent for me than either of the AI putters.  The putters are objectively excellent; I putted well with them.  Just not better than my current gamer.

Not to pile on, but for comparison purposes I also tried the LAB Link 1 and the LAB DF, both of which were more accurate and more consistent than the AI putters.

All that said, picking the right putter is a very individualized endeavor.  My experience will no doubt be the opposite of others'.  Support your local golf store and go try them out!

Working at getting better ... and very slowly getting there.

Too funny, as I made a trek to the exact same PGATSS earlier this week, @IndyBonzo

Personally, I thought the putters felt a little light to me 🤔  I have been an Odyssey fan for years now - original Rossie, 2-ball, Marxman, and currently rolling a 2-ball Marxman Fang with the micro-hinge insert. The AI in the original Epic Flash driver garnered me noticeable gains with a driver & is still in the bag 5 years later. I was hoping for the same gains from the putter. Alas, for me it was/is just marketing hype (IMO).

HOWEVER, I did start to drool over the TM Spider X putters. You couldn't have given me a Spider previously, but their sightlines on the mallets really captured my heart....and eye.

I'm really hoping my new bride forgets the 'promise' I made a few weeks back about, "Honey, this is the first season I'm inclined to just keep what I play & not get anything new this off-season...." 😬🤫

We need to get together next Spring & see what other Indy-area Spies might want to have a casual outing.

To me it actually does feel more forgiving.  I'm sure Odyssey says they are equal.  But maybe it's a psychological thing with the softer feel feeling more forgiving.   I would definitely encourage you to try them out if you can.

Thanks for the feedback.  Will definitely go try it out at the store next week.  I am a milled face guy too, but have had inserts like a Ping before and putted decent with it.

Yeah, the PING Tyne 4 with it's insert was my go to for almost two years.
