Popular Post CarlH
First day of our "Gold Cup" (Ryder cup) tournament today. 2 12 man teams that qualified throughout the year by points faced one another. Today's matches were FourBall in the morning and Alt shot in the afternoon. My FourBall match was disappointing. My partner only contributed on 2 holes and those were to tie my score, as he was having a really tough day. We were 2 up with 3 to play and I was in command of the 8th hole. All I had to do was get it on the green and 2 putt (par 5). From 135 yards, I mishit my iron and landed in the sand trap. My opponent chipped fairly close for his 4th shot. My sand shot got out alright but I caught too much sand and left myself a long putt. My par putt missed on the high side and went a bit past the hole. My opponent missed his par putt and was still away and missed that putt as well. I had a 2 foot putt to tie the hole and win the match....and, you guessed it, pushed it and missed. Lost the next hole when my approach shot once again found the sand and buried in the lip. I made 5 but my opponent made a nice putt for par. My partner was no help on either of these holes. I did not play the 2nd set of matches. Third match was alternate shot and my partner and I closed them out 3 up with 2 to play (different partner than 1st match). Fourth match I had another partner and we got skunked by a duo that was draining putts from everywhere and we lost 4 down with 3 to go. Tomorrow is another round of the same format. I'll be playing both of the alternate shot matches in the morning and the first afternoon four ball match. Sunday is head to head match play. So far I'm 1-1-1. ejgaudette, GolfSpy_SHARK, Kenny B and 7 others 10 Quote Driver: Rogue ST Max (10.5* set at -1 and neutral) -- Mitsubishi Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Fairway: Rogue ST Max 3 wood (16.5*) and Heaven Wood (20*)-- Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Hybrids: Rogue ST Max 5H (23*)--Tensai Blue 55g R shaft Irons: Apex CF19 6-9, PW, AW -- KBS Tour Graphite TGI 70 shafts R +1/2 inch 3* upright Wedges: Edison 53* and 57* KBS PGI 80 Graphite +1/2 inch 2* upright Putter: L.A.B. Popular Post TR1PTIK
Decent round today but my putting was atrocious . Shot a 43/44 87 with 38 putts on the card (5 three putts). Everything was firing pretty much on all cylinders today except for the putter. I just struggled with speed - greens looked a lot slower than they were and I couldn't convince myself otherwise lol. Highlight of the day was my overall performance on the par 3's with a scoring average of 3.20 (second best of the season). Going back to Waterchase next week so I'll be looking to improve further - I did managed to knock 8 strokes off my previous bout with this course! Yup, grew up in the south and I needed a snake skin for the Special Forces hat my Dad sent me from Nam. Baby copperheads are so colorful and we took a canoe along the banks of the river where the copperheads would get in the bushes in the morning so the sun would warm them up, then in the afternoon lie on the cool sand banks under the bushes. One afternoon I was lifting the bushes when I saw the cotton mouth open up right by my head as this dummy didn't get the afternoon UNDER the bushes memo. Jerked backwards and tipped over the canoe and lost the 410 that was in the boat along with our homemade snake loop we used to grab them. Hat got by without a snakeskin because my days as a southern snake hunter were over. I was in the 4th grade. I didn't know I was a dumb southerner til I moved to Philly. Popular Post sirchunksalot
I was able to get out after work today and get in my first round in 23 days. It's been crazy here with sickness, the passing of my mother-in-law, and other various disasters. As I've mentioned in the past it's a tradition of mine to play a round after someone passes going back to my best friend taking me to play after losing my step father to help take my mind off things. Today was a perfect day to be out, it was cooler with overcast skies. I ran into some rain on the third hole, which was a blessing as it cooled it down more. My play wasn't great, as I would have expected after not being able to even hit a ball in all that time. My putting was ok and my short game lacked the touch I'm used to having. I shot a 57 with 20 putts. My driver handicapped me on a few holes and I had a couple of cold shanks. The silver lining was I hit a few shots that showed me that there's potential in my game. On the fifth hole I hit a good drive into the fairway then hit my 7 iron right at the pin. It hit eight feet in front of the pin and rolled out to 18 feet. I had a couple of irons that were so good, at least for me. It was wet, but they went right where I wanted but probably launched a little high so they ended up just short. I continue to be amazed but how well I'm hitting the Mizuno's and the game is just so much fun with them in the bag. I'm close...I feel like there's good golf in me and that's a good feeling. I had fun today and can't wait to play again. ejgaudette, Vegan_Golfer_PNW, edingc and 16 others 16

Popular Post CarlH
Day 2 of our "Ryder Cup" today. First match was alternate shot and my partner and I won with 2 up and 1 to go. Match 2 was another alternate shot and we were all square going into #9. My team 2 putts for a par, our opponents miss a short putt to lose the match. Match 3 was four ball. After 5 holes, I've had 5 pars and we're up by 4. My partner asks me if I plan on making birdie anytime soon. I replied that I'm working on it. Hole 6 is a short par 4 and I put a wedge about 6 feet from the pin. My partner makes par, tying our opponents par and I never get to try for the birdie before they concede the match with us 4 up and 3 to go. My record so far is 4-1-1. Tomorrow is singles match play. Popular Post JerryB
We had an outing at River Heights yesterday. It's informal for work. Usually someone else takes care of things but he'd been slacking on planning. Owen had been bugging him about the next one so he gave Owen the go ahead to set it up. It went great! We got the word out a little earlier than usual and got our best turnout in years; nine groups. A fun time with some pretty good people. We wound up as a threesome of me, Owen, and our friend Paul. My dad was going to be our fourth but was a little under the weather and couldn't make it. Winning team went -11 and we were in the middle of the pack at -4. It was a total team effort and we really had a great time. My long clubs were still pretty rough but my driver was rock solid before the alcohol really kicked in (). Irons were decent and wedge game was good although we all had a problem with wedges coming up just short regularly. Owen even holed a chip on the same hole that I had done so earlier this week. Putting was really where we shined. We only had 22 putts for 18 holes. I even had a killer lag putt on a long side hill on 8 for a natural birdie; it was my drive, wedge and putt that we took. Lessons from the other day are taking hold pretty well. Very happy to see it translating to the course. Popular Post GolfSpy TCB
Went out for a quick nine yesterday afternoon to work on a few things in my swing... Wasn't driving particularly well, and hitting my irons about a half club short... but managed to save pars getting up and down on 1 and 2; 2 putt pars on 3, 4, 5 and 6; another up and down on 7; bringing me to the Par 5 8th at even. Reasonable drive in the middle of the fairway, drop kicked the 3W a bit, but straight leaving me right at 150 - but plays up hill to an elevated green. Fanned my 7 iron to the right fringe, and hit a decent chip to about 4 feet past. Lipped the comebacker for par, settled for bogey. Walked to the tough dogleg left 9 tee thinking, I need a birdie to get that shot back.. and put a drive in the middle of the fairway with about 185 left... approach ended about 25 yards short of the green, and hit a low spinning 58* that hop/check/trickled into the cup for bird. Even par 36. 4 for 5 on up & downs including the birdie on 9. Plus met this golf fan on #6... Wasn't driving particularly well, and hitting my irons about a half club short... but managed to save pars getting up and down on 1 and 2; 2 putt pars on 3, 4, 5 and 6; another up and down on 7; bringing me to the Par 5 8th at even. Popular Post MDGolfHacker
I was so traumatized by my league round, it's taken me 4 days to write about it. Had the case of the hooks..not just any hooks, they were power hooks so bad it was almost boomerang like. Not the greatest feeling struggling through 9 holes which was supposed to be a warm up for my top 32 bracket play this week coming up. Luckily I was high enough in the bracket to still survive through this week. Now I've got to figure out what the hee-haw went wrong as I was on cruise control with the swing and feeling I could easily reach the finals. The only excuse I had was that I really hadn't played much in two weeks. MDGolfHacker cnosil, cksurfdude, Kenny B and 8 others 11 Quote What's In This Lefty's Bag? Kenny B
Beautiful sunny, cool day today... only 60º at tee time warming up to 84º. Yesterday I struggled a little off the tee; not sure why, but today was solid. Loving my Macgregor irons; I'm hitting them further after my Monte clinic and yardages are off!! Two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine for even par 37. I started the back nine with three straight bogeys, but I birdied the same risk/reward par 4 #14 after driving the green again... this time into a slight breeze. I usually only try it if I have a tailwind, but I had a really good drive on #13... so why not!?! Made another birdie on the par 4 #16 with a 20-foot right-to-left putt. Missed my par putt on my nemesis hole #18, shot +2 on the back nine for another 37 and a very nice round of 74. Shot one under my age... again!! Popular Post RollingGreens
Played from the member tees in Saturday with my group as one of the guys dads joined us. Lately I haven’t started out hot on the front but really played the back well. Saturday was a different story. 2 birdies in the front, could have been 3 if not for a penalty. +1 36 on the front, huge birdie putt on 8 followed up by chipping in on 9 for birdie. I tried to act like I didn’t know what I was shooting nor where I was. It didn’t last long. I started to tighten up and I sprayed the ball here and there. Thankfully the back has a few holes that are very forgiving and scorable. My irons and putter carried me all day and it held true even on the back as I got very tentative with my tee shots. I ended up shooting a 43 on the back. Sunk a huge putt for bogey to secure a 79! today was just a ho him round. Nothing special. A good shot here and there but I wasn’t able to string much together for an 85. I will admit to significant fatigue. The heat picked up and both me and my playing partner wanted to get to the finish line. Not a terrible end to the golf week! Popular Post CarlH
Final day of our Ryder Cup matches and it was 12 singles matches for 12 points on the line. Going into the singles, team Purple is ahead by 5 points. I was in the first group. The matches were paired with golfers of similar abilities and scores were gross with no strokes given. After pushing the first hole, I promptly lost the next 3 holes then lost another hole on #8 to be 4 down with 10 to play. I parred #9 to finally win a hole and I'm 3 down at the turn. I knuckled down and fought my way back and at the end of the 16th hole we were all square. We push the next hole and tee off on 18. My opponent hits a monster drive, easily 50 yards ahead of me in the fairway (par 5). I hit my next shot and it drifts down into a hollow in the rough about 114 yards from the elevated green. My opponent finds the fairway inside of 100 yards. I hit my shot pin high, but I pushed it to the right enough to be just off the fringe in some light rough. My opponent strikes his ball and it goes above the hole, leaving himself a downhill putt of 7 feet or so. Taking no chances, I opt to put from off the green and it falls about 4 feet below the pin. My opponent misses his birdie putt and I concede his par putt. I drain my putt to be all square and split the point. So, I overcame a 4 shot deficit by hitting 10 straight pars shooting a 42 on the front and a 36 on the back! Team Purple went on the win the trophy 27-21.
