Grand Stranded
Have you guys ever laid in bed thinking of how to tweak your golf swing? (Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this) I’d been struggling a bit, hitting everything low and out on the toe. Clubs are so forgiving now, I was kinda sorta getting away with it, but as you can imagine, I wasn’t playing well. Earlier this week I had one of those Eureka! type moments. I hopped out of bed, grabbed an 8 iron and took some practice swings. I knew right away I’d fixed my problem! Fast forward to this week, and two terrific (for me) rounds of golf. A 77 and an 80. I’m going for the trifecta this morning with a very competitive travel group I play with occasionally. *fingers crossed* this continues. btw my experiment with a stiffer shaft in my driver is over after those two rounds. It’s not that I couldn’t hit it, I was obviously playing well. It was more that I was subconsciously swinging too hard a lot of the time. The ball seemed to be going about the same as with my old driver, and that was the rub. I wasn’t seeing any benefit to making the switch. I dropped the club off yesterday afternoon to my local guy, and he’s going to switch the shaft out for one in a lighter flex. My hope is going from a 9* to a 10.5* will give me a higher flight, and longer carry. We shall see. If it doesn’t, the Rogue ST Max goes back and my old faithful PING goes back in the bag. cksurfdude, Vegan_Golfer_PNW, cnosil and 5 others 8 Quote Driver: G425 Max 10.5* Fairway: Stealth 3HL & 7W Hybrids: Stealth 22* & 25* Irons: JPX 923 HM 6-AW Wedges: Tour Issue Glide 4.0 54-12 Tour Issue Glide 4.0 58-10 Putter: ER7 34”

We also have positive and encouraging conversations so that does take some of the edge off my concentration for routine and time to swing. funkyjudge
I played some horrible golf yesterday. It was only my second time playing since having cancer surgery on my right leg, where the surgeon had to cut all the way down to my shin bone, and the leg is still not quite right (I go back to see the Department Head in the Dermatology Dept. at U Penn Med Center today). On the front nine, I played "sort of OK", shooting 45, with 3-putt holes on #1 and #2. I started the back nine pretty well, going bogey - par (should have been a birdie on #11, a 170-yard par 3 dead into the wind, where I hit my best tee shot of the day to pin-high and inside 15', but I slid the putt over the left edge for an easy tap-in par). From that point to the end of the round, the leg started throbbing, and I was making adjustments to keep as much weight off of it as possible, and I hit a variety of pulls, pop-ups, chunks and just plain ugly, scrappy shots, struggling to a 50 on the back nine. I actually felt like walking off the course after 14 holes, but I am not a quitter (do you know a Marine who is one?) Besides, I was playing with two guys who play with me (on different teams) in my state-wide senior league and on the winter golf tour that starts next week. They had invited me to play with them at their home course, which is usually one of my favorite courses to play in NJ. We probably shouldn't have been playing from the blue tees yesterday with temperatures never reaching more than 55* F (it was 37* at tee-off time), and winds of 15-20 MPH, but this course is only about 6,300 yards from those blues and we were getting ready for our Tour Championship next week, where everyone -- pros, amateurs, seniors, even super seniors like the three of us, who are all in our 70s -- play from the same tees. However, even if I had been playing from the silver (senior) tees, at less than 5,900 yards, it wouldn't have helped with the ugly shots that I hit off the tee and from the fairway, rough, and around the greens on a few holes on the back nine. The worst one was on hole #17, where I hit a fairway wood off the tee on this tight 366-yard dogleg-left par 4, leaving me between 144 - 162 yards to carry the water that ends just short of the green. I took my 7-wood, because it was playing into the wind, and executed what I thought was a perfect shot, aiming a bit left, because that is where the carry was only 144 yards and the wind was pushing slightly from the left anyway. The shot looked good, and I thought that the worst case scenario would be that I put the ball in the left front greenside bunker. We got up to the green and there was no sight of my ball, so we could only surmise that it hadn't carried the water, which was a total shock to all of us. One of the other guys commented that I usually hit my 7-wood at least 190-195 yards, to which I replied, "yeah, it's normally my 195-200 yard club". After that debacle on 17, we went over to the 18th tee, a 515-yard uphill par 5, with me still fuming about what happened on 17. I proceeded to scrape it around, taking 4 shots to make it to the front right greenside bunker, then blasting my 5th shot over the green into the back bunker. I was lucky to get up-and-down for a 7 to cap my back nine 50, and a round of 95, eight strokes over my course handicap from those blue tees. ejgaudette, cksurfdude, Sluggo42 and 5 others 8 Quote DR - Callaway Paradym AI Smoke TD, Newton Motion 4-Dot 4W - Callaway Paradym 3HL, Newton Motion Fairway shaft, 4-Dot HYB - Paradym X 18*, HZRDUS Smoke Red 80S; Sub 70 949X 21*, same shaft 7W (if played) - Sub 70 849, ProForce Black 80-S Irons - Callaway Paradym, HZRDUS Silver Gen 4, S-flex Wedges - Edison 2.0, 53* and 57* (bent to 58*), KBS TGI 100 Putter - (currently in flux, but usually an Evnroll 8V Ball - Maxfli Tour-X CG (2023) Bags - Ghost Golf Maverick Black Ops Cart - MotoCaddy M7 Remote (without the remote) Spoiler driver / off the tee is no longer a weakness for me! funkyjudge
17 hours ago, CarlH said: Sure...first, I'll comment that my biggest weakness is partial wedge play. This course has some tight lies with underlying soft, damp soil which gives me the heebie-geebies. My issue often arises from getting a bit steep on the downswing and the leading edge digging into the turf instead of catching the ball cleanly first or utilizing the bounce effectively. The only level lie you will ever have on our course is on your tee (overstatement, but close). I typically will chip with anything from my 57 degree wedge (but normally use my 53*) to a 7 iron depending on lie and situation. #17 is a par 4 with water right and in front of green so it's typically a layup hole (reachable for the BIG hitters). I hit a 6 iron off the tee and had 90 yards to pin (75ish yards to clear water/rock border), hit my wedge a hair fat and ball comes to rest in rough (thick bermuda/zosia mix) a foot short of the water hazard. Grass catches club and I double hit it sending it left of green. 4th shot goes about 6 feet past pin and I miss the putt. #18 is a par 5. Driver followed by 7 wood to have 110 yards to pin. I push the PW a bit, hits the fringe and rolls into the green side trap pin high. Sand is wet and I send the ball screaming over the green into pine needles on downhill slope to elevated green sloping away from me. Pitch it and ball ends up 10 feet below the pin. Two putt. #1 is not a difficult hole provided your drive finds the fairway. Left side is trap and rough, too far right will go down into a valley into the rough. Anyway, my drive is not bad, clearing the trap and finding myself just in the rough. Green is elevated and anything short will roll down the hill, anything long is a trap. Green itself is fairly shallow, but wide. Although I felt like I struck the ball cleanly, my approach shot falls short and bounces back off the hill into deep rough. Pitch/chip is short but close enough to putt over a bit of fairway and then the fringe. Normally, my distance control of these shots is good, but this one wasn't and I left myself a hard breaking 6 footer which I failed to convert. Interestingly enough, some of the other holes that missed the GIR, I was able to get up and down for par without issue, including similar shots that I duffed and 2 sand saves. I will try to putt whenever possible because I have little confidence in short wedges. The bump and run is a much safer play for me, but often is not an option. 60% or more of the time, I will chip/pitch just fine. It's that intermittent hiccup that gets me every time. If I could nail down this portion of my game, I have little doubt that my handicap would fall at least 3 strokes. Don’t feel bad, I get up-and-down about half the time (my current GHIN handicap is 15.3), but I can manage to make a real stink-bomb out of chips and pitch shots just as often. I noticed that you have posted about hating, or being a poor partial-wedge player. I am the same! I have finally learned how to hit partial wedge shots with my 49* Edison wedge with a dual bounce sole and that SOMETIMES saves me when I face 55 to 90 yard shots. This worked well for me in NW England and Scotland this summer, but not so well lately, as I have been playing less-frequently (and not at all from Sept 12 - Oct 15, due to cancer surgery). saz0418
Shot my low round of the year: 74. (40, 34) Included a double-bogey-- but 5 birdies. Full disclosure, I am 63 years old and play to around an 8-10 HDCP. I can tell you it was a LONG, gruesome Summer for my golf game. Lots and lots of high scores as my HDCP went from 9 to a 12/13. Felt like I had to re-learn the game from scratch I have been playing up tees (say, 6000 yard there abouts). When you play bad AND play forward (with a lower HDCP), your index takes a beating quick. I focused on putting the last 4 or 5 weeks and it has payed off. I learned how to plumb-bob and now have speeds to match reads all round the clock for greens 10 - 11 stimp and 2 -3 degrees of slope which the most common I see. Only 30 putts today and only 1, 3-putt. Happy to be able to put a round together again because the last 3 months were very demoralizing. I retired about a year ago and thought playing more would translate into playing better. I really did not work that way most of this year, but maybe we are turning the corner. Happy with the trajectory-- you know, just as the weather turns cold (here in Ohio). Popular Post EasyPutter
The end of this wet weather week has been a gorgeous mid-autumn day for the latest 9 hole round at Caz GC. Had a triple on the par-5 4th probably due to wearing one too many layers under my golf shirt. Up to that point it was single, double, double. After the layer was removed the 5th tee shot was one of the longest of the day and finished single, single, par, single, double (thanks to doing a layup to not dunk the second shot into Cazenovia Creek and a misread break for the first putt). Total raw 49 so with HC of 13 for 9 it was a net +0 Putts per Hole today was 1.6. On the 6th green I had made comment to my partner that my chip on left me a lot of work for the putter, and then promptly sank the 20+ footer with left break in 1. That was the most notable of the 1-putts that were on holes 1, 5, 6, and 8. sirchunksalot, cnosil, GolfSpy_SHARK and 8 others 11 Quote Derek Verified Hack, ~21 handicap Golf for exercise and peace of mind. |> Big Dogs: First Strike Rattlesnake (10), TeelessTM (13), Tommy Armour TA1 3h (19), Ginty Trouble Club (29) |> Blades: First StrikeTM DeliveranceTM 4(23) 5(26) 6(29) 7(33) 8(37) 9(41) P(45) |> Wedges: Worx (55) Lovett (59) |> Flatstick: L.A.B. (Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this) ... Don't we all? I try and counter by conjuring up the scene in Days Of Thunder when the crew is trying to "fix" the car (swing) and tell Tom Cruise they need to find some more speed (off the tee) and Cruise says "Don't change a thing. The car (swing) is perfect". Which leads me into todays round. Just swinging very well right now and shot a 68 after my 69 Wednesday. Got on a nice little run with 4 birdies in a row and then hit the dreaded 2 groups waiting on #10 and the magic disappeared. Still hit the ball crazy well with 78% GIR's and 86% FIR but just couldn't make a putt. Greens are rolling nice so no excuses just misreads that either didn't break like I thought or just broke out of the hole at the last second. 5 birdie putts on the back 9 in the 7-10 foot range and I made none of them. Will_Mac
Hey all, seems the forum's back on Tapatalk, so... so am I (btw, nothing at all special about Tapatalk, I'm just a hopeless creature of habit).I went 39/40/79 today with 2 birds, 8 fairways, 11 greens and 33 putts. But what was interesting, or maybe not, was that I played a 10 year old, and very uncommon, ball. The Innovex V-Motion. Found 1.5 dozen, new, in my closet and figured what the heck?Just as I remembered, it's a very good golf ball. Only, a little clickier than I recall. Distance off the tee, prescribed distances off all clubs, spin, all on point. I got away from them once the company went under and was forced to find another ball. But, I sort of like playing what others don't. I won 2 skins today and had fun reminding the guys about the nondescript golf ball that took their money. If they were still around, I'd likely still be buying from them. cksurfdude, JerryB, MattF and 3 others

cksurfdude
Sorta feel like I'm making some small progress with my game, but sheesh only very small... First hole was interesting .. short par 4, slight dogleg left, slightly elevated green. So-so tee shot but it was in the fairway and bounced and rolled into a decent position .. pretty good short iron to the middle of the green, where I found it plugged in a GUR area .. replaced the ball just outside and .. rolled in an almost 30 footer. The funny thing here is - didn't even realize I'd made an unlikely birdie (where it's usually bogey) until the next day when I was reviewing/editing my round in ShotScope! Then a few up and down holes highlighted by good recovery shots and really good putting. Get to #8 .. a longish, for me, Par 5 that I'm still working to make a par on. Tee shot plays to a slightly elevated fairway, trees and bunkers on both sides; second shot plays over another hill crest to another elevated section for the approach (if you can carry the crest, otherwise it's a blind approach). Actually (finally) pulled off a good drive to the left center of the fairway and rolled out to almost 230 (yeah me!). Hit the 4H pretty solidly and carried the hill, tho a bit left, and ball landed just in the left rough. Check the lie .. a little messy but not too bad .. reasonably straightforward pitch shot; check the distance .. about 85 to the middle with the pin a little to the middle right... .. check my aim, my stance, and the surroundings, the ambient atmospheric conditions, my inner feelings .. set up to the ball and... ..yep tensed up blocked it right just off the green into the rough where it bounced right then rolled downslope into a deep bunker ... from where I did not make a miraculous up and down..... Next time, #8 .. next time...... ejgaudette, sirchunksalot, Kenny B and 2 others 5 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... Popular Post sirchunksalot
It was a beautiful day to get out on the course, 73 degrees by the time I left with 10+ mph winds. It was a little cooler when I teed off at 1 and by the 4th hole I was regretting wearing pants. The grass has gone dormant, so the course is now a nice shade of brown My rounds started off like it usually does, I pull hooked a drive into the rough on the third hole and proceeded to duff the next couple of shots en route to a +3 7. Over the next 5 holes I went +2 to be five over through six. Hole 7 I lost a drive and ended up with a quad. I ended the round +11 for the best score I've posted inn a long time (47). My ball striking was the best I've seen in a long time with every club in my bag. With two exceptions, I hit driver well. On the par 5 3rd I finally hit one toward the right of the fairway leaving 209 to the flag. Hit a beautiful 5 wood 15 feet short of the green and had a Texas wedge chance of an eagle. I ended up missing as it rolled 15 feet left of the hole, but I did par. I actually parred both the par fives, hitting a sawed off PW from 78 yards right at the flag, but it rolled out 20 feet. My irons were the crispest they have been since I got them. On the par 3 8th hole it was playing 148 and I hit 7 because I normally total 138 with it and hit it to flag high and it rolled to the back of the green. The work I've been putting in these last couple of weeks is starting to pay off. The Swing Jacket has my body rotating better than it has in a while and when I feel like I get my belly button toward the target...it's a stripe show (for me). I can't wait to do it again.
