If I can't putt from off the green,
I'll still normally try to avoid chipping if I can help it.
I just find it so hard.

Because the air is easier to read than the green,

I take my 64,
lob right at the stick,
and hope that it sits.

I just do a to-and-fro wristless shot with my weight on the left side as if with a chipper,
judging the speed of the swing by imagining that I was lobbing the ball underhanded,
and lob all the way to the hole.

[If you're trying this for the first time, you're not going to lob near hard enough.  If you decelerate on the hit, you're toast.]

If the green is falling away, I'm basically screwed, however, and have to try a shot that I DON'T know how to make.

Chipping is not my strong suit either. I hit it like a putt…..shoulders back and shoulders through with no wrist hinge whatsoever. Middle of my stance.

Sorry, for greater clarity, chipping from the short grass 20-40 feet off the green with a clear shot at the hole (no obstructions that would require a pitch). Intent is to get the ball into the hole.

Even in short grass there could be different lies but we will assume I have a good lie.  But what does the green contour look like and how far; once I hit the green, does the ball need to run?   Flat green probably GW. uphill might take me to a PW or 9 depending on distance it needs to run.  Needing to get over a tier or downhill might mean SW.  long roll on the green maybe 7 or 8.  If that 20-40 feet is elevated I might bump 7-9 into the slope short of the green.

basically I don’t think there is a single answer and it may just get down to how I am feeling on that particular shot.

For anything that is not a bump and run i use the 53*.  For bump and run shots i will use pw to 8i depending on the length of the roll out / carry to the landing spot.

Depending on distance I will either use my 60 and lob it up and try and get it to sit, or use my 9i or 8i for a bump.and run. If the greens are really dry and rolling a bunch I'll opt for the 60 more. I've found whatever I'm more confident in is what works better. When I second guess what I should be using I usually don't get the results I want. Definitely think the bump and run technique is more consistent, but if you can use a high lofted club confidently and control your distance, it yields better results.

58 is my usual go to around the greens.

but as what someone pointed out - sometimes the condition will dictate on what club you have to use. There are times where the earth around the greens are hard and then I would elect for my Gap/Pitching Wedge.

The greatest hazard in golf is not the water, the rough, or the bunkers. It's your mind. Learn to set realistic expectations and everything will fall into place.

It was my Taylormade TWMG 56 but I got a Cleveland CBX4 50 and it changed my opinion on cavity wedges. My proximity has improved on all shots (even traps) inside of 105 and interestingly the feel is very good. Yes part of it is the lower loft but it has become the go to because it is automatic in everything but super tight grabby chips. The TWMG 50 has the edge there. It has the sharp, tight bounce to get under the ball. When the dormancy hits here in TN the TWMG 50 will probably go back in the bag but for now the CBX4 is terrific. The TWMG 56 and 60 are still in the bag and are indispensable around the green for more technical shots.

It sounds like you’ve developed a solid approach to your short game! Using the right club based on the conditions and your confidence level can make a big difference. If you’re feeling good with a high-lofted club and the greens are firm, it’s great to go with that. Otherwise, the bump-and-run is a reliable option for more consistency. Keep trusting your instincts and the results will follow!

You are right in line with my 3 hcp buddy, with the bump and run. I am going to work on that this winter. If for nothing else to have another steady shot in the bag. Its a touch shot I need to adjust to. I am willing to learn.

I don't really have a stock club to chip with I alternate between the 52', 56' and my PW all depending on the lie, elevation, distance, green softness and wind.

56' I can manipulate better than the other 2 clubs, opening the face and playing it back in my stance. For longer chips the the 52' comes into play. Then in windy conditions and uphill chips the PW.

In the past I’ve used my 55 degree everywhere around the greens with the exception of bunkers or short sided shots where I needed to loft the ball high. In those cases I’d opt for my 60 degree. Recently, I’ve started using my 60 degree more as a general purpose club around the greens and have really come to like it. I find the bounce on my 60 degree really helps in picking the ball clean and not digging in the lead edge, which causes the dreaded fat or duffed chip. I also enjoy the higher loft and can fly the ball closer to the hole or if I need, de-loft the club and hit a shot that rolls out. I’ll still pull out the 55 degree when needed, but I’m kind of sold on using my 60 degree at this point.

I only have faith in my 46 degree right now. Feels more controlled and chunk proof. Have a lot of tight lies here in thr desert southwest and this club has delivered so far.

I use mostly a 60 degree wedge or 8 iron.

The 60 is my do everything around the green club especially for short sided chips or any shot that needs some height . The 8 iron is strictly bump and run especially if it's flat. I'll mix in a Aux wedge for the rare bump and run that needs more run than a 60 but has something in the way within a yard or two I want to get over.

This, to me, is what's great about the Cleveland Smart Sole Full Face chipper/64° combo.

They both have a very similar sole for turf interaction and can thus both be played with the same stroke.

If you want to run it up, almost like a putt, use the chipper.

If the air looks more inviting than the contour of the ground, use the 64 with the very same stroke--only much harder.

No real need for anything in between--for chipping.  Pitching is a different story.

My go to club is a 52.  By moving the ball back in my stance I can go from a softer landing with min roll to a chip that rolls out.  This summer I have been utilizing more clubs around the green, from SW to 9i.  I hesitate to try different clubs unless I have spent time on the practice area.

Putt whenever possible, we have all heard Arnold's quote...  After that it depends if uphill or downhill. I usually stick with my pitching wedge for most shots, but if greens are slow I will use a 7 or 8 iron, especially on uphill chips.   From behind the green with some downhill roll I may use my 54 or even 56 to loft it and try to land it soft. (Most difficult for me)  Chipping is what I probably practice the least and need to practice more.

If it's a straightforward chip, I'll use my 54* almost every time, but it's definitely situational. I played on a course yesterday that has had some struggles with their water lines, making the greens unbearably fast, so I used my 58* most of the day to get a bit more loft/less runout.

Considerations: for me 70 yards and longer are some sort of full shot.

65 yards and in are chips or pitches. For standard shots I use the putter, 50, 54, 58 depending on yardage and obstacles. I live in AZ and the courses I play generally don't have obstacles in front of the green, so I mostly chip. I recently switched my primary chipping club from the 58 to the 54 because of the heavier swing weight. This gives me better feel and more solid contact for consistency.

I wish I had learned the technique to pick a landing spot visualizing flight and roll out, but I didn't even think or hear of that until I had been playing for many years. Instead, I primarily use yardage and have set swings and club choices for 65 down to 5 yards. I favor playing over practice so this is an easier way for me to get up and down. I look at this way, even if I miss 10 greens and my success rate is only 30%, I'm still breaking 80. Luck into a birdie or 2 and a little higher success rate and end up with a pretty darn good score.

Irons: Callaway Rogue ST Max 8, 9, PW

Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM6 50,54,58

My go to is my Ping Glide 56 degree. The grind is perfect for high and soft or two hop, then stop shots. The only other club I use is my 7 iron, but that is for those tweener shots when there is just a bit too much fringe to putt through.

Generally it depends on the conditions I’m dealing with.  If it’s a dry, tight fairway lie, I like using my 60 degree.  If it’s a soft or fluffy lie, I like something with more bounce and use my 55 degree.  At the end of the day though I feel like you gotta zero in on what you’re most comfortable with and just work to make that consistent while understanding the differences that conditions have on your stroke.

Kirkland putter for life!  Trusty ping for fairway finding, really old TaylorMade irons, and Cleveland wedges.  I just love golf

I had a pretty great day chipping yesterday for me. So much so that the random fella I was playing with asked me how I learned to chip as well I was lol not normal for me! I typically use my 54 degree wedge and on the last hole of the day used a 50 degree gap wedge that ended up 1 inch left of the hole. If I am just a couple of feet off the green and not comfortable putting I’ll use a different iron depending on distance for more of a bump and run.

I have a cobra rad speed driver, cobra fly z 3 and 5 wood, taylormade m1 irons (5-PW), Top Flite Gamer wedges (52,56,60), and odyssey white ice putter. When I’m playing to keep score I typically play the Maxfli Tour X. When just getting a round in with friends or scrambling I play whatever I might find on the course or might find at the bottom of my bag.
