  1. I'd never been fitted for any club in my bag, until yesterday. And I never, ever would have fitted myself into the specs I ended up with. I'm going with the long story version here; skip to the end if you just want to get to the point. Goals My hope this year is to replace my driver, for two reasons. The first is that I am a terrible off the tee (so it's gotta be the club, right?). Those who follow my single-digit-handicap thread know that last season, I was getting about 220 off the tee—and that that number represents about a 25 yard gain on the previous year. The second is that my current driver doesn't fit my current goal in building my bag, which is forgiveness. Ever since my G700 iron test, I've been working to make my club setup as friendly as possible for an average golfer. The Rogue SZ isn't known for being that club. I bought it for two reasons: it showed well in the 2018 Most Wanted testing and it was on sale on Callaway Pre-Owned. Fitting Attempts Initially, I had a fitting scheduled at 2nd Swing in the Twin Cities, to coincide with a trip I was taking there. That was canceled the week the world shut down. When that was canceled, I attempted a bit more formal home fitting. I currently own two Callaway heads: a Rogue Sub Zero, 10.5° a Big Bertha Alpha 816 DBD, 9.0° I also have three Callaway-tipped shafts: Project X EvenFlow Blue 65 Fujikura Speeder Evolution II TS 665 Aldila Tour Blue 85 And then I have multiple Callaway weights. Along with my SkyTrak, I figured I might try a whole bunch of combinations to find something that worked. I spent one Saturday hitting a bunch of balls, but it went terribly. One of the reasons I'm bad at driving is that I have no place to practice. My garage ceiling is too low to swing driver. I fear practicing outside, because pop-up drives are not unknown in my game. I absolutely don't want a drive that goes over the net in the neighborhood I live in. After hitting a bunch of drives with various combinations, my average looked something like this: That's pretty pathetic. I hit all over the face. The spin rates were very high; I was seeing shots in the upper 3000s with regularity. SkyTrak measures no head data, but I figured there was a very high likelihood that I'm hitting down on my drives. This explains the spin rates, the pop up drives, and the high launch angles. Given how poorly I was striking the driver, though, my inclination was to move from the Rogue SZ to the Mavrik Max. In every way, it looked like it was designed to help a poor schlub like me hit better drives. I was excited when Callaway announced their new distance-fitting program. My hope was to get a shaft recommendation from them. Given the numbers in my spreadsheet, it looked like my best shaft was the EvenFlow Blue, so I was looking for something similar for the Max. Looking at Callaway's shaft options, I had narrowed my options to about a half-dozen (mostly) mid-spin, mid-launch shafts, including the stock EvenFlow Riptide. After a couple emails back and forth (my local cell tower fritzed out the day of my scheduled call), it was looking likely that I would go with a pretty stock setup. A Local Fitting! Then I got an email from a course about an hour west of me: a Callaway fitting day! I called that day and booked a half-hour slot. The fitting was yesterday. I got to the course and got a couple buckets of balls, so I could warm up and Kirke could keep occupied. [Speaking of, how pretty is this?] I felt pretty good after my warmup swings. I was still waiting for my time slot, so the fitter built me a stock Max with a regular flex EvenFlow Riptide (I think it was the 50g version). And I couldn't find the ball. Small panic sets in. I am not a shaftoid (to use Mark Crossfield's term). I would not be able to tell you what my preferences are in a shaft. But I will say that the stock shaft felt very wobbly to me, and I was struggling mightily to make anything like reasonable contact with the ball. My biggest disappointment in the fitting was that it was being done with a Swing Caddie, rather than a Trackman or GC Quad. It was outdoors, which was a big plus: I can swing freely. But I was hoping to learn some of the numbers, especially the head data, that I don't get from SkyTrak. We began with a few swings from my current driver, and the numbers were worse than they were at home on the SkyTrak (I'm guessing a lot of this was due to the difference between a freer outdoor swing versus the cautious, don't-miss-the-net swing). My spin rate was in the upper 3,000s and my launch angle was around 20. My swing speed was just about where I would have guessed: 96-97. But putting all those together, I was carrying the ball just over 200 yards on the good shots. Not ideal, but pretty consistent with my on-course performance. When we swapped in the Max (he put in a stiff shaft), the spin number went up closer to 4,000, which is what you'd guess going from the SZ to the Max. But that's a totally unplayable spin rate. This became the mission, then: to lower the launch and the spin rate, to maximize the distance of the admittedly very imperfect swing I have right now. While I was fully expecting to go from Rogue SZ to Mavrik Max, the fitter decided to give me the Mavrik SZ. Eventually, he swapped in the 9.0° version of the SZ rather than the 10.5° I'm currently playing. Because of the roll of a driver face, because I'm hitting nearer the top of the driver, I'm increasing the effective loft. By lofting down, I'm counteracting that. I did have one shaft on my shortlist in the low spin category, thinking that it might be useful if the Max increased spin: the Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI. So we tried that, and kept seeing progress. The fitter went back into the tent and built up one more version, and that was the winner. I got my spin down from a high of 4,000 down to 2,700. My carry went from 205ish to over 230, with a launch angle around 15 or 16. I dropped my peak height from over 110 feet to a more reasonable 90 or so. So what was the magic formula in that last driver? Mavrik Sub Zero, 9° head geared down to 8° Heavy weight forward Aldila Rogue White 130 MSI 70g, in X-flex My jaw dropped when I saw the settings he had given me. I would never, in a million educated guesses, have even begun to think that these specs would work for me. That's a setup for the 115-swing speed crowd, not the middle-of-the-bell-curve hacker like me. But the rationale behind the decisions makes sense in hindsight, and the proof was in the ball flight. The fitter said he felt comfortable trying the X-flex with me because I have a fairly aggressive transition. That was interesting to hear, only because it wasn't something I had a good reference point to evaluate myself. This is a hybrid swing, but I can see the point he was making. I'm definitely not a "pause at the top" kind of guy. So there are plans in the works: I'm hoping to get my hands on this setup sooner rather than later. In the meantime, I'm probably gonna do some tinkering with the clubs I have on hand, seeing what I can do to drop my spin and lower my flight. Also, I am planning to work on my swing. I've got a Plane Mate coming. So there is a question: if I've got this driver so extremely tweaked to deal with such bad impact conditions, what happens if I get better? Here's my hunch: I think the shaft will remain just fine. If I begin to come into the ball with a neutral or even positive AoA, I should be able to loft the head up and move the weight back. So I'm not terribly worried about that. For now, I'm just enjoying the feeling of having my mind blown by the fitting. You guys know that I've never been anti-fitting, but just lacked opportunity. I can definitely add myself to the list of those who are now strong advocates of getting fitted if it's possible at all.

Classic tale of two nines yesterday. 43-35 78. First live church services in two months and tried out the new SuperSpeed warm up protocol that left me clueless for 7 holes - I started double, double, hitting trees on 1 and 2. Made a solid par on 3, a great up and down for par on 4, a solid par on 5 and then crashed it into the trees with a chip out from the trees into the water on 6 that led to a great double with a fabulous up and down. Bogeyed the par 3 7th after a truly crappy tee shot and then woke up - bogeyed 8 but hit a solid drive and knocked my approach over the stick over the green - missed judged the wind. I was one under the rest of the way. Had remarkable touch all day, it let me stay around and then get on a roll once I started to drive it in play. 10 holes, 9 pars and a birdie. The best was 18, solid drive down the right side only to discover that the pin was back right (we couldn’t see the pin from the tee, hidden behind a trap with a hard right to left wind and tree branches all down the right side. Tried to cut a 7 iron, double crossed it ended up on the front left leaving me over 100 feet. Putted it to 6 inches and tapped in for one under on the back. The course that we played was in great shape. It used to be the home of an LPGA event, the St Pete Open. Fast and firm, tight, I hit several drives 240 plus. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  3. Swing speed sits right in the 96-97 zone. Need to get back to doing SuperSpeed training again and get that back up over 100. As for staying with Callaway: it's not something I'm locked into. But there's a level of familiarity and some opportunity there. Here's what my current stats look like from the rounds I've played this year:

  4. I've been lucky. I purchased a squat rack over the Thanksgiving holiday so I've been able to keep lifting during lockdown. I haven't been as consistent in doing flexibility work, and now that summer is here I've cut down lifting significantly due to golf, mowing lawn, gardening, etc. But yes, I saw some really nice gains mixing For for Golf and SuperSpeed. Combined with a few lessons I picked up about 3 MPH of club speed with a 7-iron on Trackman in about two months. I looked back at my Trackman numbers that I referenced in the above Tweet. I averaged 119 MPH ball speed with the 7-iron. Since December I started doing heavier compound lifts and started a second round of SuperSpeed, including the new SuperSpeed-C club. My maxes on my lifts have gone up 25-30 pounds and I've put on about 15 pounds since December. Last Tuesday my Mevo recorded an average ball speed of 122 MPH over 11 swings with my 7-iron. That included two shots that topped 125 MPH ball speed. SuperSpeed works, and tossing in some other workouts is definitely helpful. It is important, in my opinion, to find the right combination of training days/times so that you're well rested for everything.

  5. I recently added another Bobby Grace to the stable through a trade. This Tour Center M5K GT is a very similar setup to my longtime gamer. BG custom shop build with rare gray insert, unstamped rear block and longer perimeter weight screws. I haven’t pulled it apart yet to compare the component weights to my old gamer, but it feels heavy. Hard to find in really good condition. I’m looking forward to tinkering with it.

Small crowd for sure but it was a great start and we still had a nice number of views of our you tube service - we recorded the Saturday night live one. So we had 110 in church plus 172 views of the video thus far - if there were an average of 2 people on those views (very conservative estimate given that we have families of 4 or 5 who view) we had nearly 400 people ‘in’ church this weekend. That’s outstanding for this time of year for us. The normal would be 300. The only real issue that we had was that I’m not in the pulpit for that one and the Rev is not one to stand still when he’s out of the pulpit. Laura gave me the look from behind the camera and I behaved after that. But just wait for her wedding in two weeks. I’m not in the pulpit for that one hen I preach, either. :) Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  11. Yes! You need both to up your speed potential. Also someone earlier mentioned would simply swing driver fast help increase speed. I’d think. Up until recently very few people did things to actually increase their clubhead speed. If you’ve never done anything something will help. The bigger question is what effects a permanent change and what allows you to come the closest to reaching your full potential. The folks at SuperSpeed have done a lot of research and they maintain that over speed training like theirs is the way to go. On another note I tried the new suggested pre round protocol - my 43-35 and achy body today tell me I will need more modification and experimentation to find what works for me. My body totally rebelled and betrayed me for the first 7 holes yesterday - it’s a shame, with the touch that I had around the green I could have had a sub par round if I had just done the normal dynamic warm up. 13. So I went to the range today and did the normal dynamic warm up although I’ve modified it to use the Blue club rather than the Red. I then started hitting balls, full wedges at a flag that was 110, then 7 irons at one that was 148 - peppered that one, then 7 wood (4 iron equivalent) at a flag that was 184 - but 6, 4 went past it and these were true range balls, not quite as good as a gamer. Then came driver - but first a blue stick swing: That’s very fast for me so I couldn’t wait to see what driver would bring, this: There was a flag at 227, that’s just about my average drive per ARCOSS (226 isn’t average), this ball flew past that and bounded up to a pin that was 264. For real. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  16. For sure. If the gym ever opens I might actually find out. SuperSpeed is more brain training, even though it is a decent workout for a 52 year old that have seen a gym in a couple months. Increasing strength and flexibility would compliment the program, imo. Of course, @ChasingScratch is more the expert in this area.

Played Eagle Point again last week, rain showers and gusty winds got the best of me. Really feel good about my swing change. I'm hitting the ball straighter than ever before but my ball striking really needs to be better. My driving continues to improve and my wedges were better but my approach shots were just awful. Could not buy a putt. But had FUN ! By the way I'm really digging all the pictures being posted with your rounds

  19. Just bought and tried out a pair of these shoes. I normally get a 40% discount, but because of COVID it was increased to a 60% discount with free shipping. I couldn’t resist at $52. ASICS golf shoes have never been beautiful in my minds eye, but these were tolerable so I pulled the trigger. These are quite comfortable. Now I would not say they are as comfortable/cushioned as the Puma golf shoes, but these are a much more stable shoe with a solid heel counter. They readily accommodate an orthotic and the toe box is quite roomy even at a regular width. They appear to be true to size. They do not appear to be available in wide widths. The shoe appears to be well made. Good torsional stability and the forefoot breaks at the appropriate spot. Insole is removable. If anyone is on the fence about this shoe, I give it my professional seal of approval.

Does that increase speed affect your timing to hit driver and irons? You was already skinny your going to disintegrate with that workout regime and detox...LOL

  22. I loved the feel. It felt very, very stable. I'd almost like to give some of the absurdly stiff shafts (Hulk and similar) a try, just so I have a reference point for what "too stiff" feels like. The additional yards were carry: the LM he was using was only displaying carry.

  24. I'm still gaming these Black Cats. I absolutely love them. I'd be curious to know how they'd do with R+ or S shafts, but I have zero complaints about the current setup. Its about time for new grips. Probably GP Tour Velvet +4 med as I absolutely love those too I've played a few rental sets while traveling. One of note was all Titleist. The AP3 irons were nice, straight, and long. However, they totally lacked the feel on solid shots that the Black Cats have. It could be a number of factors like shaft flex and grip thickness, but I really love the feel of the Cats.

  25. In our City Championship two years ago our Pro decided not to “groom” the bunkers before play started, and did not list them as GUR. Guys were complaining all day during round one. The Pro told them, “Bunkers are supposed to be penal. If you don’t like it, don’t hit your ball into them!” All I care is that they’re not rock hard, other than that, it isn’t “supposed” to be manicured, so play it in the bunker. 27. Yeah but now ARCOSS is coming out with that new shots gained feature - Perhaps I will put the probes back in and not worry so much about getting the pin placement accurate. I may loose a round here or there because it locks but over time the loss of that data won't matter much. And I have a USGA handicap so the ARCOSS one doesn't mean much beyond giving me the breakdown as to how its assembled - I've clearly learned that the closer I get to the green the better I am relative to other golfers and that my approach game stinks - I sensed that before but the data on either program, makes it clear. Maybe its time to look into a set of D7's.

  29. Was 8 over going to nine. After I knocked it over the green on my approach and made bogey on 8, I repeated the mistake when the wind died on me on 9. Dead!!! Flopped my 58 to the perfect spot i the rough and it trickled down to the lip -tap in par. After another nice up and down on 10 rolled in a 15 footer for birdie on 11, another up and down on 12 and then easy par after easy par the rest of the way home for 35 on the back. That par on 9 was the key though. While 78 isn’t great for me it tastes a lot better than the struggle to break 85 that I was looking at as I walked to the 9th tee. 30. Rock on! Yes, having a home gym is the way to go if you can make it happen spacially and financially. We made the investment about 6yrs go to build a nice gym with everything we'd need. If you calculate out how much we would've spent on two gym memberships every month for that time, we've more than paid ourselves back and the equipment will last a looooooong time. It has certainly been beneficial during this crazy time.

With a full 6 in the bag I noticed slight resistance pulling my putter out of the bag since the cooler encroaches on the putter well space. For reference I had an Evnroll ER1.2 in the bag with a standard pistol grip. I could see how a large putter grip would get hung up on the beers. Further testing required. 39. Also tells me what my experience is between these two types of irons, the distance gap is narrower with blades. Look at the grouping on the good and poor strikes with the blade, much tighter. I can play with a ten yard gap to manage misses but double that and it is hard to manage. Worst thing most good players don’t want to experience is not knowing how far a club will go. The other telling graph was related to spin and how much tighter it is with a blade; which plays into how much tighter distance is. The SGI irons have a place in this game and work for a lot of people but in the end they don’t work for all players. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  41. Had a brief chat with Fantrax about the schedule and conferred with the other commishes. Seems the PGA officially counts the US Open and Masters in the 20-21 schedule since it occurs after the Tour Championship. So Fantrax followed suit and this fantasy season will end with the Tour Championship as our final event and the PGA as our only major. Sucks, but what can you do. Looking to 2021, I have a hard time starting the golf league right back up so we can capture these events. The leagues take a lot of attention so the prospect of running golf and football at the same time isn't very appealing. At this point, I think the best course of action is to continue our season with the original playoff format playing as many events as we get, watch the new fall events as fans, then start golf back up after football is over. Any opposed?

  43. Hi everyone - I'm happy to be a part of this site! I've been playing for about 35 years (really - its been THAT long?!?!), and I'm a 5 handicap. The thing I love about golf is that you can never truly master it - it's a constant pursuit of perfection that will never be achieved but the chase is sooooo much fun. My cousin is a member of the forum, and he knows how much of a geek for golf I am so he recommended it to me. I'm originally from Jamestown, NY but I have been living in the DC metro area (mostly in Northern VA) since 1995. Best things are we can play just a about year-round, there's access to some really good instructors. Bad things are green fees are expensive and the pace of play is really slow. I'm a business consultant by day. I've never had an ace before, so that's my big goal!! the other part is my nickname.

Struggled with my 4h and I cant figure it out. I think its mostly a set up issue. Irons were pretty spot on and the tempo Ive been working on really paid off.

  45. Curious to see how the TE stacks up to the F8. The F8 is no slouch . Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  47. To reach one’s peak potential in any athletic endeavor, I firmly believe that a strength and flexibility program is essential. Look at any modern professional or collegiate athlete. They almost all do strength and flexibility training. Even those who don’t look like they do. The SuperSpeed team acknowledged that overspeed training is just a part of swing speed. 48. I gave up drinking over two years ago however some of my friends still partake in sud sipping. One of the good ole boys decided to be ready when the bars open. He came up with a handy little set up and will be taking orders on ebay.

  49. OK, so went to my home course with the intention of walking 9. Got paired up with another person and wound up walking 18 on the tougher, narrower, course (my home club has 36 holes). Really starting to love this HOGAN driver. The club now sits square (at least to my eyes) and i am having a much easier time getting lined up. I am growing more and more confident in this club. I will point to a few things. 1. feedback--the immediate feedback coming off the face is great. Also, i love the sound this driver makes and the feel of it. 2. ball flight--the ball is coming off the face at a higher launch (my TITLEIST driver was about 10 degree launch angle...HOGAN Is around 13.). This could be for a few reasons. Lighter shaft, higher degree of loft, etc. Whatever the reason, perfect trajector 3. Spin--while i have not tried to get actual spin rates yet, this driver seems to spin less....i put some swings where I KNOW my Titleist driver would have gone left, but the HOGAN stayed pretty true to the line. Right now, I am really liking this driver and am appreciative of the chance to test it. ON COURSE: Hit driver on 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17. Hit fairway on 3, hit it through the fairway by 1 foot on 4, hit fairway on 5, hit fairway on 11, hit fairway on 12 (par 5 with trouble at end of fairway (creek) and the about 200 to the pin. Hit it about 295 (very long for me) to 5 feet in front of creek. I even told the person I was playing with, I will hit driver as i don't hit it 300. Hit fairway on 14 and 15 (15 was also long). 17 I pull it into the rough so that was me, not the driver. The fairways I missed were literally 3 feet from the fairway and most rolled through. BOTTOM LINE: This driver hangs with any driver i have every played (Titleist/Taylor Made being my last two) for a better price. Quick side note: the feedback I have received from others I have played with has been.. "what is that driver, it sounds great". "I didn't know HOGAN made clubs still". Where did you get that driver, i have not seen them anywhere. even a "why are you playing a Hogan driver". The perception that HOGAN is not a Callaway, Taylormade, Titleist, etc. and thus is no good is very real with some people. I have not let anyone else hit it....yet.
