    How'd you play?

... I am starting to figure out Desert golf again. So different than the Midwest or Orlando. 315 yd drive today with a nice breeze at my back, a slope about 250 off the tee and fast fairways. I can't even sniff 300 back in Chicago. Played the back 9 first and finished 1 over then pulled a tee shot on 1 (my 10th) into the adjacent fairway leaving me 185 to the flag in the middle of the green. I hit my Cobra MIM Tour 7 iron that I carry around 165 and found my ball just over the green, so a 195 yd 7 iron?!? Pa-lease LOL. I know it landed short of the green but with the 7 mph wind and hard fast conditions it ended up just over. Played the front in 1 under and shot even par for the first time in Phoenix this year. At 67 it is nice to play a course with 3 holes at 430 or longer that can be reached with mid or even short irons. Back in Midwest with the soft conditions those holes are long irons or even hybrid/woods! ... 65-70* and sunny in late December is as good as it gets. I think I am gonna like it here, until June - August of course.

Thanks Rev and everyone for all the prayers, support and encouragement. JB is right, i’m ready to kick Covid to the dump! @hckymeyer had the most appropriate tweet to me last night. That i will handle covid with no issues. But how many clubs will be ordered while im here. Start the over/unders ha Update: i was sick all Christmas weekend, had a fever and coughing. On Monday i started getting short of breath and had a telemedicine call with my Dr. he sent me to the ER. They tested me for COVID and pneumonia and admitted me. Since Tuesday am. I have felt overall very good. All vital signs are normal. The oxygen level is still low. But im on a 5 day drug for that. Once it stabilizes i can be released. But im getting great care from everyone here. Hardest part is my fiance/wife at home who cant see me. But i call her regularly and she is glad to hear im doing well. I just echo RevKev’s above. Please take this seriously. There are some patients here near me who aren't as well as i am. We haven't beaten this yet!! But we will, if everyone does their parts!

  9. Some pics from today - it’s been several months since these entered my bag. They still look beautiful - just the faintest wear mark starting to appear in the sweet spot of my 8 iron. Our grass is finally starting to become dormant which makes it extremely tight. The turf interaction on these under that condition is truly remarkable. I hit them beautifully on the range today and in the 9 that I played - shot 38, hit 7 greens - one three putt hurt. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

  17. I am not sure it is quantifiable just like lessons aren't really quantifiable. I personally think fitting, lessons, practice, and education are all part of the recipe for improvement. I could get fit which in theory would increase distance and narrow distribution, but with bad strategy and/or swing issues you probably won't see much improvement. Just like I can take lessons and become a worse player. Many people on here say they are feel players and if fitted clubs improve their feel but not their scores is that considered quantifiable benefit? Improvement is also something that has to be measured over time and as we see on this forum and on other forums, people move on from clubs; even fitted clubs, frequently. I would also guess what you consider quantifiable evidence is different than someone else as you have been outspoken about the fitting process.

  21. Not exactly sure where this belongs, feel free to move it if that will help. Like a lot of others I bought a ShotScope V3 6 months ago. Shout out to @deejaid for the post just a bit back where he complained that the web site interface was different than mobile. That started me on a path to check out the web version of ShotScope. I never realized there was some statistics available, and some good stuff at that! Learn something every day, eh? Looking back at 2020 and seeing what didn’t work so well has been a little eye opening. I’ll be taking this news with me into ‘21. Only 15 rounds have been captured with SSV3 since the 16th of July. It’s been hard to get rounds in since everyone discovered golf this year. We don’t have that many courses in Co Springs, tee times have been a precious commodity. 1st note to self - play more in ‘21. Overview of the Year Ignore the bit about the Round, that was the last round played. I don’t carry a handicap but that +16.88 for an average score seems right. I’ll say that’s ok for 2020 but I need to improve in ‘21. Distances - P-Avg (playing average) Good Lord I’m all over the place. Take some of these numbers with a grain of salt. I don’t use a 5 wood very often so it’s hard to get a good average. In fact besides the driver, the upper end of the bag doesn’t get used that often. Longer holes I normally go driver/6i. That my go-to combo. That lack of gap between the 8 & irons? Hmmm. Strange bit that. Maybe the 8i needs to be checked out. Here’s the longest, we all like to believe our longest is our normal shot. At least it looks a little more normalized. The 8 & 9 irons are still goofy. Drives - the good, the bad, the ugly Yeah, that’s a couple of 83yd drives in the lower left. Super human I ain’t. But the long was a legit 300yd’er, no helping wind or anything. Shocking! I’m an equal opportunity sprayer of the ball on the tee shots. Approach shots - just call me Shorty 2nd note to self - club up you fool! You’re not as long as you think you are. This will be a continuing theme for putting as well. Short Game - maybe there’s some hope after all This is chips and pitches of course. Doesn’t look too shabby. 3rd note to self - don’t slack on practicing this area of the game. Putting - yeah, just call me Shorty Kudos to ShotScope for not pulling any punches - Never up, Never in. Okay, okay - I get it. I’ll start working on blasting it by the hole. 1 vs 2 vs 3 putts Three putts at 8%. Prolly not too shabby but thinking back and a lot of those were stupid mistakes. Should be easy to clean up? 4th note to self - pay attention dummy! Day dreaming not allowed. Here's to a better '21 since I can clearly see what needs work

  23. I don't think people are avoiding your question, and I will say again that I don't think you can quantify unless you look at a person who is dedicated to improving their scores. For a player that just gets fit, you are most likely correct that there will be little to no scoring improvement just from fitting. They should hit the ball better and have the tools necessary to improve their game. Are you talking 2-3 stroke a round or 2-3 stroke on scoring distribution over time? What level of player are you talking about? What is their commitment to improvement. What type of evidence do you want to see and if that number was .5 strokes what would your response be? How could we provide something that would change your bias? I honestly don't think any provided evidence will change your bias against fitting; which is fine. We can point you to reports that talk about strokes saved, increased distance, and better shot dispersion but I don't think you would consider that quantifiable evidence. We can also discuss + handicap players that never had lessons and play 20 year old clubs that they bought off the rack. Can you lay a roof with a framing hammer? Can you drive a car with the seat pushed all the way forward? Can you open a can without a can opener? Can you cut wood with a hack saw? Can you ride mountain trails without a mountain bike? Do professional golfers sometimes struggle with equipment changes?

  24. The older I get, the less I care about what day of the year it is. Like you, I'll easily be in bed, probably before 10:00 pm. Besides, if you want to ring in the new year, just go to Australia, where they are already in 2021 (depending on which part of the continent/country you are in).

  25. 2020 was the best golf year for me since having kids. I got new Sub70 irons and a new Honma Driver(thanks MGS!), played more than ever, and got some great training aids. But I feel like 2021 can get better. I turn 38 next week, and also need to get in better shape as I put on a Covid-20 lbs this year with the gym closed. My handicap started at 0.5, peaked at +2.0 after a few low rounds in early summer, than fell back to a +0.4 to end the year. My low HI came when I was playing a lot of rounds away from home where I played better, so I need to get my scoring average down at home. Scores also went up a bit after adjustment period with new equipment, but settling in nicely now. 2021 Goals: Lose 20-25 lbs Stay in + handicap Get to 120mph cruising speed Have a span of 20 straight rounds on GHIN under 80. Currently I have one 80, and need 12 rounds in 70’s or better to clear it. Break 70 at my home course (rating 73.7) Average less than 1 3-putt/round and average 30 putts/round(currently 32) How I’m going to get there: Dry January- No booze for a month to help my body recover faster and kick-start weight loss(Starting on my birthday Jan 8.) Golf membership- I just got annual pass so I should be able to play around 40 home rounds in 2021 (played around 25 in 2020) Superspeed training and lifting 3x week at office. Also getting a basketball goal for office warehouse to use daily(used to play 3x a week pre-covid) Perfect Putt mat at office for daily use. also switched to claw grip in November and putting has improved greatly Tracking stats and workouts. I’ve never been good at tracking. I like that I can enter round with stats on GHIN now, but this will show areas of improvement. Will do a spreadsheet for golf stats and habit roadmap with written weekly checklist for the workout/superspeed stuff.

  28. I picked up another 3 dozen TaylorMade TP5 Pix practice balls while they're on sale again at Golf Discount. At $19.99 a dozen, they're hard to pass up. I've had a bit of a rough time keeping them out of the water here lately and thought it'd be good to replenish. I might set a half dozen aside for net practice.

  30. So I’m working on an update for my WITB thread but felt like this was worthy of bumping the #CCC4 thread for if any of you guys are still following. Way back when we were selected and had our orders in we were asked what we hoped to see or had concerns over and such. I was worried that the lofts of the Forged Tec irons would create some weird gaps in my bag (I had come from a set that was basically 4* through the set). And I was worried that the strong lofts and hollow design would lead to some hot shots. I know that I have already mentioned how consistent I felt the distance was from the irons but I was looking at my Arccos stats and needed to share this view of all my rounds played since getting the Cobra clubs: So starting with the wedges I’m very happy with that gap, I almost never take a full swing with the 60* so a 20 yard gap there makes sense. Outside of that they are almost perfect 15 yard gaps all the way up to the hybrid. I can see the data suggesting the 7 iron and 5 iron are longer than they should be, but looking at individual shots shows that the 7 iron is still pumped up a bit from a few down hill tee shots (my longest shot with that iron is 196 yards). And with the 5 iron, those numbers are getting pumped a bit from some tee shots. I can hit a good runner with that club that gets some extra yards. I think this consistency and gapping really helped me get comfortable with these irons right away and were instrumental in my ability to play well over the summer. TL;DR - Cobra’s engineers know what they’re doing. Don’t be concerned about the lofts on the forged tec clubs. Of course, YMMV.

  33. See this is where, for whatever reason, I am different. Either in the way the PRGR reads me or in some other way. I should be swinging the sticks much faster according to my GC Quad swing speed, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter much. If you get results on the course, you get results, regardless of what the numbers read or should read. I’ve never been higher than 122mph with the red stick. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy

    How'd you play?

With rain threatening the spoil the day, we teed off in the cold, damp weather thinking that we probably wouldn't finish the round. I struck the ball okay, but putting was atrocious ... greens were slow and I just couldn't seem to adapt to the speed of them. Amazingly, the rain never came as predicted and we were able to get the full round in. Overall, I didn't play well, but, as always, had a lot of fun with my group. My partner and I got beat on the last hole when one of our opponents rolled in his birdie putt.

  37. I was able to get out and play nine holes today on a day where the course was packed and the wind was howling. My wife came along to act as caddy, swing coach, and mental game guru. I actually took a photo of the two of us, but had something on my face and didn't notice it at the time. My wife was bundled up and I am probably going have some wind burn. Not the greatest day scoring wise, but we had a fun time out there enjoying a beautiful day, except for the wind. My wife noticed my alignment was off, which helped a ton. I was hitting my third on a par five after topping my second when she brought it up. I striped a 3 wood that landed the green and rolled off. That was probably my favorite shot of the day. She did try to kill me, though. On the fourth hole we were approaching my ball when she hit the brakes and threw me into the windshield. Fortunately I was able to catch myself with my hands and the windshield was up. It'll be a story we tell for a long time.

  39. Do people avoid getting fitted? Yes - all the time. Do they have a quantifiable reason not to? No - never. Other than: It's too expensive I don't know where to get fit There's no fitters near where I live I'm too old I'm too young My swing is not repeatable My swing has changed I'm working on my swing first My last set didn't work I don't play enough to justify it I play to a professional standard with OTR clubs or any clubs I choose because I'm special like that

  43. My sons and I played our last round of the year at Boulder Creek in Boulder City, NV on 12/27. 14th hole of the round, #5 on the Desert Hawk 9 - Par 5, 476y Hit a decent drive down the right, ended up in the hardpan next to the cart path. Punched an 8 iron back on the the fairway, 95y out. Hit a SW from 95...looked good in the air...hit the green about 10ft short of the pin and rolled past up a slope. And started rolling back...closer....maybe....in! Eagle for Dad! Capped off the strangest year ever.

  44. Academy Sports, Dicks, and some small privately owned golf shops. They may have launch monitors, all the different club specs, etc. but they just fit to what looks best. We to a Golf USA that does an ultimate fitting. He looks to see if you are compensating, or changing your swing to make something work. He also compares the club you are wanting to replace. If he can't find something better, or that will do what you want, he won't sell you a club. Sometimes he will make an adjustment to your swing, and have you come back in 2 weeks for a fitting.

    How'd you play?

This is the opposite of what I do. Instead my routine seems to be complaining to others about my short game failings, and talk endlessly about eventually putting in the work to fix them, but never actually getting around to it. what makes it worse is the golf community I live in has an excellent practice area for the short game. I have no excuse other than being lazy.

    How'd you play?

It helps to not be a digger. I spend a lot of time in our short game area hitting 30-40 yard pitch shots with my LW; I just bruise the grass. Then I move to the putting green and hit chip shots with my LW off the fringe cut around the green. I don't do it all the time, but I will occasionally hit low flop shots off the fringe, just for those times out on the course. If you have those shots, you have to practice them! EDIT: My LW has a C-grind and 12º of bounce.

Yeah, i just picked the ball up on that hole in the picture. There wasn't really a feasible way to putt the ball and I didn't want to destroy the green by chipping it.
