Since i didnt follow all the possible schools and scenarios. What kept Auburn out. I honestly don't know, did they lose 1 or 2 games? I'm guessing they must have lost to Alabama as well as GA along the way?

Wow... I just went back and reread the last few pages of this thread (34-39) to make sure I wasn't being unreasonable or gloating. I believe that I have been one of the few that has been very sensible throughout this discussion. 

 

I would like to invite any other participants in the this thread to do the same to see their own findings. At least 37-39. For themselves or others. We can do better than this if we want to talk about college football related things. Its just damn football... And we aren't even playing. We are watching.

Since it is such a sore topic, here is how I would set the playoffs up next year if it came down to me. 8 teams. 5 P5 conf champs. 1 G5 at large bid. And 2 at large spots. 

Rankings only determine seeding and the 2 at large bids. Even this way seems to be broken but I feel like there wouldn't be any somewhat deserving teams left out.

2. Big12 champ Oklahoma

3. SEC champ Georgia

4. At large Bama

5. Big10 champ OSU

6. At large Wisconsin

7. Pac12 champ USC

8. G5 at large UCF

 

This would matchup: Clemson-UCF

Oklahoma-USC

Georgia-Wisconsin

Bama-OSU 

And of course play out from there. 

 

Is it perfect? Hell no. But I don't think there would be a lot of complaining about a non worthy national champion.

This is exactly the scenario I was talking about with some friends, you have the power 5 conf champs, then what I said was 3 at large, which allows for teams like UCF who have had a remarkable season to at least have a chance at winning, who know how good they are. It makes you think back for those 2-3 years where Boise St was so good, and when they were finally given the shot to play a a big program in a bowl they did not disappoint. My final 8 playoff scenario is exactly the same 8 teams that you have. I like the idea of having The at large because it allows for some smaller lesser known teams that have an exceptional season to have a chance to win it all.

I prefer not to have Alabama in, I as a Michigan fan don't care to have Ohio in there as well, or Wisconsin for that matter. for me, no matter who got in I think we're going to have 3 really excellent games to watch, and as a fan of college football that's what I want anyway. The best part is I don't care who wins as long as it is Alabama.

So my initial thoughts on the 2 games, Clemson and Alabama are both good on defense and also have good offenses, I think that Clemson's defense is a bit stronger this season. This game is really a guess, I'll go with Clemson 31 Alabama 27, I think the other game has a bit more challenge to call, Oklahoma's offense is strong, Georgia overall is solid on both sides of the ball, I think this game comes down to 1 key factor, can Georgia run the ball effective enough to keep the Oklahoma offense sitting on the sidelines. This one should also be close, but I'll give the edge to Oklahoma what could be one of the best games of the year, Oklahoma 42 Georgia 38

This year there is 5 times the outrage just because its Alabama. haha Ask Clemson who you think they would rather play? Bama or a team they beat 31-0 last season.

It somewhat makes sense to me. I don't love the idea of an 8 team playoff purely because it was stretch the season even more but it would keep teams from being "left out" as much. Totally agree on the smaller schools getting in btw. Personally, I think the current top 4 would eventually smash UCF in an 8 team playoff. Eventually meaning they may win their 1st, but will get blown out before its over. Who really knows though? They may be better than I think.

They've had a great ftooball program for as long as I can remember. Before moving to fbs they were an absolute power in fcs as well!

I somewhat agree, but I actually think that they got it right both years. They wanted the best team for the 4th spot. Penn state got blown out by your Mich squad by 39, got beat by Pitt and almost lost to Minn/temple. They also eventually got beat in the Rose bowl. So they were an 11-3 team that got "robbed." 

The committee seems to be consistent with a few things. 1- Don't get blown out. 2. Don't lose 2 games. 3-If you do lose a game, make sure that it makes sense(good loss). And I think I'm alright with that.

 

Although the 8 team scenario you and I proposed does make a lot more sense to keep everyone happy.

I agree. I said I didn't think Ohio State should get in. They shouldn't have been in last year either. But, two wrongs don't make a right, as they say. The crappy system allows for someone more deserving to sit out. That is maybe just my opinion, but that's how I see it.

It really could be an easy fix to add the 4 teams, they could play the 4 games 2 weeks after the conf. Championship games and that would give us 4 teams for the Jan 1 bowl games. Division 2 has had a playoff system for years and it seems to work well for them. The difficult part of he 8 team playoff is lining up the bowl games for the 4 losing teams in the first round.
