Post Your Swing

So rather than just cherry picking one swing I took the time to just film almost every swing of a session and cut it together with some shot tracer.

I'm through my lesson package and I think I'm mostly shallowing and on path (which is what 3 of 6 lessons ended up being were about). My weight transfer mostly seems to be good, and I like where my abbreviated backswing is at.

I'm not thrilled with where my arms, hands, hips, and shoulders are at impact but it's something I'm working on.  Any tips or drills to open up my hips and shoulders more at impact and to keep my elbows a little tighter toward my torso.  I'm seeing a lot of heel strike (which will be apparent in this video) on Driver.

Our swings don’t change from shot to shot, what change is our ability to compensate for our faults. When we can do a good job of timing the compensation we will have our better results and when we can’t we get our not so good to bad shots. When looking at fixing a “problem” in the swing one has to look at the cause not the symptom. Not getting hips and shoulders open at impact is a symptom and actually not a fault but results from a compensation.

It’s hard to tell especially with the size of the video but what I see is that your turn is more of a false turn. Your arms separate from your body early and you move the left hip out instead of the right hip back. What happens is that you lift your arms to the top and get them too deep.

Your shallowing move is dipping the right shoulder and not a pressure shift to the left with some bend at the waist and the left hip going back. You get a little stuck as a result and have to easily extend to hit and throw the arms at the ball. Some of this is typical with bigger guys. Look at Kenny Perry as an example.

Drills to work on would be out a club across your chest, turn then add left bend. This will be where you want to be in the backswing. From the feel pressure  move into left foot with adding some additional left bend. From here you want to feel you bend at the waist and your hips move back a little. Then feel your left hip move back and up as you turn to the ball.

Here’s a drill too

First video of myself in a long while. Still working on things, generally pretty happy with this.

Videoed my swing for the first time this season during my range session today. Went with the magazine-style P positions montage:

Lots of progress in there over the past few years.

Haven't video'd or posted my swing for a bit.  I've been focused on feel and here's where I'm at right now.  Turn mute on.  There's a lot of course instruction noise going on and I hadn't realized how loud it was.

I'm pleasantly surprised with my setup, takeaway, weight shift/transition/recentering, and impact position.  the main focus this year has been getting that lead hip cleared out and it looks like I might have finally done it.

I'm less thrilled with the steepness, elbow position, and general extraneous movement.  Anyone else see anything I'm missing.  I'm looking at you @RickyBobby_PR I seem to have a naturally steep swing with a flying elbow that I slide back toward when I'm focused on other parts of the swing.  It isn't a disaster but I feel like I'd be far better position (and more consistent) with my club if I could keep my trail elbow in a better position.

Not the best angle for reviewing a swing.

Always full face on looking at the center of the body with the camera at hand height and from down the line with the camera at hand height pointing at the hands.

What appears to be happening is you love the arms and not really turn the chest/core and then lift the arms in the backswing while also the left knee kicks out in the backswing which is going to prevent any turn.

you to slide in the downswing which causes you to be steep in transition and drop the right side to shallow

Work on pressure shift and takeaway.

Driver hasn't been my friend of late.  I've struggled with getting through the ball and while my irons are really where I am seeing improvement, off the tee is killing me.  There are two distinct swings between irons and driver and I cannot get that to translate.

... I never thought I would say this to you because you know I admire your swing, and comments based on one swing video are completely reckless buuuut that said ... have you tried slowing down just a hair? Judging from past video's you seem to be putting just a little more effort into this swing than I remember from previous video's.

... Like a lawyer representing himself, goodness knows I am by far my own worst student. One of the things I miss about teaching was going over some fundamental with a student, I would realize I was slipping on that myownself so I would catch it before it became an issue. There are just sooo many fundamentals and it's impossible to stay on top of all of them all the time and exactly why almost every Pro Golfer has a personal instructor. And it seems like one little slip can affect so many other elements of the swing. I have no doubts you will fix this and be back on track.

It’s why I really value this forum. I can bring an issue to the table and there are some quality voices ready to speak up.

I played this am and hit it slightly better. Margins were narrower and I’d attribute it to the PING taking the place of the TSi3.

When September hits I’ll be out regularly when my daughter is back to school. Then it’s game on.

It’s not the best angle to view a swing so  it skews somethings. The club looks to get behind you hands between p2 and p3 and your hips look to be somewhat restricted and not much depth. The result is you are firing the right hip at the ball and getting stuck. Now it becomes a timing issue and the likely hood of a 2 way miss, depending on how good you are at on the given day of squaring the club face or to compensate for a right miss  closing the face a little

while slowing down then transition might help, getting the club in front of the hands and a little steeper going up with getting the hips working correctly will help

Good eye. I’ve always taken it inside and it’s one of those moves that I’ve conceded I likely won’t change after 35 years of playing. I’ve watched guys like Cantlay and Horschel of recent who can get the head in front of them especially when they make that their pre-shot practice move. It’s something I’ve conceded that I may never be able to implement.

I agree with what you’re saying here.  This swing relies upon timing and when I’m sequenced I can jam.  When it’s not I fall back into what you’re describing

I have some similar tendencies in my swing that end up with similar compensations you are making. I don’t get the hips rotated or I max out rotation early and end up firing the hip and getting steep similar to you. Our compensations are typical of the better player whereas higher handicaps will have the tendency to get ott.

Like you when everything is working it’s great and when it’s not then we are in for a long day of trying to figure out where the ball is going off the tee.

Forgot to mention with the thought of slowing down the transition think of getting the left hip back or at least not firing the right one as early. I’ve seen Monte recommend keeping the right foot planted.

My feet are pretty quiet so I think they could cooperate with that train of thought.

Thank you for the tip, I may be able to try that this weekend.

While they're not proper DTL (GPOD arrives this week) there are notable differences.  Right arm is supporting the club better, right hip is working better in transition and the result was far better.  My preferred ball with a driver is a very slight cut and this ball did exactly that.

@chisagI took your advice to work on tempo and today was a proper result of pausing before starting the downswing.  It may not look like it in the video but it's there.

... Rich there is so much to like about your swing! Without changing your backswing or plane or excellent tempo 👍 You are swaying away for your target and moving/straitening your right leg making it impossible to use your lower body to start your downswing. If you keep the flex in your right leg you will be in a better position to start your downswing by moving your weight to your left foot, which will help you turn your hips through impact. With your hips square to the line at impact now, you are crowding the ball forcing you to stand up and lose power.

... Try this, put a golf ball under the back side of your right foot and maintain the pressure on the inside of your foot, keeping your knee flex and start your downswing by pushing with your trail foot/leg to your left foot. No need to change anything else. Of course this sounds really simple and in a vacuum it is, but changing habits that are engrained is never easy so it takes discipline and dedication. You can do this without hitting a ball in your house (if you have high ceilings) or in your yard and of course at the range. Hope this helps!

Admittedly, I know that I can have a tendency to roll my right foot on the takeaway a bit. I don't know if it's related to the fact that I have very flat feet and have some pretty high arched orthotics in those shoes that force my foot that way, or if it's just a bad habit. I do have to think about keeping the inside of my right heel down to keep from rolling like that.

As far as the hip thing, I'm kind of at the point where I'm not sure if I can physically make the proper move or have the patience to try to rework my swing. My left hip tends to "catch" in the socket, making it hard to make that movement where the left hip goes back. I don't think the video shows it, but I have some where I can see the left hip suddenly release from that caught position long after I'm at the finish. So, part of me is cautious to mess with it because I'm not sure how much time and frustration I'm willing to dedicate to something that may not even be realistically possible.

I'm probably much more critical of myself than I need to be, but it's my nature.
