I think I recall one person going to 45" and saying they liked that. I watched the latest TXG livestream and Ian acknowledged that going shorter would help swingweight with heavier heads like the TSi series, but he also warned that cutting it shorter would lessen some of the speed potential. I'm leery of going shorter for one reason - resale value. A 45.75" shaft is worth more on the secondhand market than a shorter one. I've debated about going to 45.25" but that's what is holding me back so far. Would choking down on the grip have the same effect as shortening the shaft? edingc

As with most things in in golf, it depends. Some people have no issues gripping down on the club, while others are more comfortable at the end of the grip (like me). As far as swingweight goes, I'm not sure how AutoFlex would react to a heavier head but gripped down. cksurfdude 1 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. I've hit shafts that are too soft and they feel noticeable too soft. While the AutoFlex feels very soft at address/waggle, it feels as stable as anything I've ever hit through the swing. I still haven't been able to get out on course with the shaft. My swing has been really miserable lately anyway, so I haven't had much to add here. I tried last weekend but only made it through six holes, and I didn't hit my driver once. Swing speed has unfortunately been trending downward back to the 106-109 range as well following my second COVID vaccine, though as I get further out from the second dose I hope to see some of that speed return. During Tuesday's range session I still averaged 158 MPH ball speed over 14 swings so the efficiency is there (1.47). cksurfdude and GolfSpy_BOS 2 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. I was lucky and had minimal side effects from the first dose (brief tiredness about 24 hours after), but the second dose wiped me out for about two days, and two weeks later I still have occasional localized pain in my arm and shoulder near the injection site. My wife had it a little worse both times. We both received the Pfizer vaccine. Hope your wife has minimal side effects. I probably wouldn't have noticed the swing speed difference just by eyeball or feel, but having the Mevo running shows a significant decline in speed since the second dose. I've noticed during my workouts that I'm still struggling a bit to lift the same weights I was pre-vaccine as well. cksurfdude and GolfSpy_BOS 2 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. edingc
I finally got the AutoFlex out on the course yesterday morning and used it three times during my nine hole round. I was very happy with its performance. I've been trying to be more smartly aggressive on some holes (a la DECADE), taking driver and aiming more toward bail out areas and playing for a good shot to be straight or slight fade. On No. 5, I aimed further left than I have in the past (some trees taken out this offseason helped here), and hit a slight pull left of my target. Still, because of the distance I was able to just hit a low, chippy wedge under some trees to the back of the green and two-putted for par. No. 7 is the course's toughest hole. 422 yards, uphill, dog leg left. I bombed this ball, and I'd say it's the best drive I've ever hit on this hole. I hit the ball so high I almost completely cleared the tree guarding the dogleg and unfortunately just caught a branch on the backside of the tree. Even with hitting the tree it nearly went 270 yards. I think, without clipping the tree, I would have gotten a perfect release down into the fairway. Unfortunately, the ball dropped straight down and I caught a tree trying to run the ball up to the green with my second shot. I did low heel one on No. 9, but it cut over nicely into the center of the fairway. Just an awful swing but the results were fine. Big distance loss from the low heel shot and the fairway running up hill. After I finished nine, I hopped over to No. 17 and No. 18 to hit a two more drivers on each hole. The first drive I hit on No. 17 was one of the best I've ever hit on the hole, leaving me a pitching wedge in to the flag. My second drive on No. 18 was pretty good as well, not the longest I've ever hit but again, a pitching wedge into the green. I would guess the drive on No. 17 was in the 265-270 range while the one on No. 18 (going back up hill) was probably 255-260. When a lot of the early AutoFlex reviews came out last fall, the 505X was recommended for speeds higher than 110 MPH. Only the more recent English fitting charts imply that the 505XX might be a better fit. This chart from Torque Golf is true to what I remember from last fall: There is a ton of whippiness in the shaft just waggling it around, but I don't feel like it's unstable on the downswing for me. But, I don't rip the club back in my backswing, and when I'm getting my best speeds near 115 MPH, I'm doing it with a long swing and smoother transition. I suppose if you are more violent with your transition the 505XX might be a better fit. I've been able to sell a bunch of collectibles from past hobbies and have fully covered the cost of the AF with unexpected money, so I'm not under pressure to sell to recoup cost at this point. I'm thinking I might go for a driver fitting in July or August with the latest Callaway heads and see how it goes before deciding, also. As a follow up to my first response, Gabe Gallucci on YouTube compared a 505X to a 505XX in his latest video on YouTube. Like me, he purchased the 505X before the latest fitting charts were around. He swings a little faster than I do (172-173 ball speed), but the only difference he found between the two shafts was about 250 RPM of spin (~1,800 for the 505XX, ~2,050 for the 505X) using the same head. Honestly, both of those spin numbers are reasonably low already. Could I play the 505XX? Probably. Would it make a "real world" difference? xOldBenKenobiX
Unofficial Review: Dumina AutoFlex SF505X Driver Shaft Long, cold winters without playing golf are dangerous for the wallet. I try to be a frugal golfer. I built my last two irons sets to save some cash, play at an affordable, municipal-style course and balk at spending $60/hour for simulator practice in the offseason. But, after seeing launch monitor numbers on YouTube and tour validation with Adam Scott, the mystique of Dumina’s AutoFlex became too hard to pass up. I am not a particularly great driver of the golf ball. I struggled with an inside takeaway and a steep, over-the-top wipe at the golf ball for most of my golfing life. As you can imagine, I did not have good results with the big stick. I’ve been fortunate enough to have tested two drivers for the MyGolfSpy Forums now. Both times I fit into a stout, low-launch/low-spin shaft to offset my delivery. After working with my coach for the past 18 months, I’ve made some good progress with my driver swing. This winter, I switched to a nine degree Callaway Mavrik head with an x-stiff Aldila Rogue White 60 shaft. I gained a bit of launch without adding spin with this combination. I am hitting the driver better and further than ever before based on my FlightScope Mevo numbers. My Mevo numbers at the heated winter range have stayed between 110-117 MPH club speed and 158-165 MPH ball speed. I had the opportunity to hit range balls outdoors once last week when we had weather in the low 40s. After 15 shots my averages looked like the following: Ball Speed Club Speed Smash Carry Launch Spin Height (ft) Time 160.2 109.2 1.47 260 12.5 2,640 108 6.9 On course, I am too tentative and usually do not reach the same level of speed as I do on the range. That said, I had a handful of nice drives during my first round of the season this past weekend: My goal with the driver is to keep the ball in play and not cost myself penalty strokes. I am still working on the confidence to swing faster knowing I've improved. My apprehension to swinging faster (which is definitely a mental issue) is one of the factors driving me to try the AutoFlex. The shaft could be a game changer if I can get a few more MPH club head speed without feeling like I’m swinging harder/faster. Fitting and Ordering Process Limited information is available online about what a “proper fit” is with the AutoFlex. As many of the TXG YouTube videos have highlighted, there are specific headweight and swingweight considerations to account for when determining playing length, head choice, etc. A lengthy thread over at GolfWRX is devoted to the AutoFlex, but I found the best information in a Facebook group dedicated to players/users of the shaft. There, I found some “real world” advice from people who had tried and failed/succeeded in using the AutoFlex. For my build, I was targeting a 45.75” finished length and a swingweight between D1 and D2. These specifications are recommended by the manufacturer and also the members of the group. Before placing my order, I made a post on the group and received helpful confirmation of my plans from a knowledgeable member. Although not required, I did order the shaft from one of the professional fitters in the group. His price was the best I found. The shaft came cut to my specifications with a Callaway adapter installed within three days. I installed a Lamkin Sonar Tour grip to match my other clubs once I received the shaft. I am not aware of an AutoFlex available to try locally. My Setup I replaced the stock five gram Mavrik weight with an aftermarket weight weighing two grams. Many people have chosen to go with a heavier grip to “trick” the swingweight scale. However, it seemed like the most successful players had opted for lighter head weights instead. Rogue White 60X Length 45.25” (45.5” to very end of grip) Headweight 192 grams Swingweight D2.5 AutoFlex SF505X Length 45.75” (46” to very end of grip) Headweight 189 grams Swingweight D1.5 The Facebook commenter mentioned I may need to loft down the Mavrik head to eight degrees. I currently play at the stock loft. First Impressions From a looks standpoint, the AutoFlex is gorgeous. Yes, the hot pink may not be for everyone. I love that it stands out in the bag. The “black” color is not flat black, it is more of a pearly green-black at close inspection. Very sharp! I know of no other shaft that arrives in its own protective sheath. A nice touch. The feels from the initial waggle were as advertised. Imagine taking a club head and attaching it to a fishing pole. There is plenty of waggle/movement from the head. But it does not feel that way when swinging. It will be intriguing to hit a ball and see how it feels at impact. I completed an initial test by taking three swings without a ball each with the Rogue White and AutoFlex. After quickly warming up, I measured my club speed with my Sports Sensors radar. My three swings with the Rogue White recorded at 110 MPH, 111 MPH and 113 MPH. My three swings with the AutoFlex recorded at 115 MPH, 114 MPH and 116 MPH. Keep in mind the AutoFlex plays 1/2” longer than the Rogue White. I’m not willing to chalk up the speed gains in this brief test to anything more than length (yet). I expect my driving range to open for the season sometime in the next two weeks. I will be able to gather more data and feedback at that time. Is a driver shaft worth $800? Probably not, although I’m keeping an open mind. I would be ecstatic if the AutoFlex magically added 3-5 MPH club speed and the 4-7 MPH ball speed that should accompany. On a well-struck shot, that would be a quantifiable distance gain. However, I’m starting without any high expectations. Part of what I enjoy about golf is trying out new equipment, so much so that my constant swaps are most likely detrimental to my scores. I’m not usually one to usually experience FOMO, but in this case I got wrapped up in the allure of this mysterious shaft. And, at the end of the day, I still expect resale to be reasonable. Always need to have a backup plan. That is awesome, I love the look of the autoflex.I'm excited to see how it performs during the season.Sent from my SM-N975U using MyGolfSpy mobile app Larryd3 and edingc 2 Quote My Reviews: 2023 Official review - Rapsodo MLM2Pro! 2022 Official Review - Edel SMS Wedges 2021 Official Review - Tommy Armour Impact 3 Putter 2020 Official Member Review - BagBoy Chiller Cart Bag Cobra SpeedZone Xtreme - Unofficial Review by xOldBenKenobiX Honma TR21 4 Wood - Unofficial Review by xOldBenKenobiX Driver - Cobra SpeedZone Xtreme 10.5, UST helium 5 Wood - . Popular Post edingc
This (expensive) experiment has worked out well. I'm head-over-heels smitten with the AutoFlex. I've played three rounds of golf in the past week and have never driven the ball better. Arccos had been sucking for me early this season, but I made some tweaks in the Android power settings before my round yesterday and am glad I did. I think I had the best driving day I've ever had at my home course, and Arccos worked flawlessly in capturing the performance. Seven of my nine drives went 270-plus yards, including three over 285 yards. I had a little wind help and even got one out to 299 on No. 17. On a 48 degree, rainy morning, I could not believe my results. We've had a dry spring and I'm getting a little more roll than I'm used to at my course, but I'm definitely carrying the ball farther than I ever have and I still don't feel like I'm swinging as fast as I could. I'm hitting small draws and getting very nice height with the Mavrik set at 8 degrees. I am still playing with the stock Mavrik weight, at 46" to the end of the grip and swingweight of D2.5. I know I've improved my swing a lot over the winter, but my Arccos Smart Distance at the end of last season with driver was 262 yards. Only one of my drives went less than that today, and it was a toed duck hook that I thankfully managed to keep in bounds. My driving highlights from today's round: No. 5 - I've only started hitting driver on this hole recently. It is a short par 4 with a narrow 30-yard fairway. A nice tight draw in the middle of the fairway led to have the shortest shot I've ever had into the green. No. 7 - This hole is the hardest on the course. In three years of playing here I've birdied it once. Another tight draw up the hill left me a pitching wedge (!!!) into the green. I've never hit anything less than 8-iron for a second shot on this hole before. No. 13 - Another tight hole but this one actually is flat and I got more roll from a perfect tee shot. I hit my drive so far I almost ended up in the drainage ditch in front of the green. No. 16 - This was a so-so strike high on the face, but the ball was perfectly straight and rolled out to 277. No. 17 - I had a slight helping breeze and the fairway runs a little downhill. I hit a small push that ended up on the right side in the rough near the trees. So close to 300! No. 18 - Coming back uphill and into the wind, this was a low straight ball that worked perfectly for the conditions. edingc
@B.Boston @ejgaudette @Chip Strokes You all are making me laugh this morning. Truthfully, I'm finding new areas of the course I'm not usually in and I'm not nearly as comfortable with second shots from them. You can see in the picture on No. 13 that I was right near the drainage ditch (where the grass is yellowing and gone) and not far from the pin that was in the front of the green. I didn't trust the ball to react well to trying to chip and run through the longer cut around the green, so I tried to hit a soft pitch with my 58 and it just rolled out to the back of the green a long ways away. 3 minutes ago, Lacassem said: its working for ya! If it doesn't work, at least people who know about the shaft will know you're a baller. yungkory, it's nice to see another LAB putter user here. I bought the 2.1 in December 2020 after meeting, and being fit by the inventor, Bill Presse IV. I love the thing, putting is no longer a detriment to my game. I just ordered an Autoflex shaft from Bill. He's a very knowledgeable club builder, and has found that the shafts are working very well, as long as the driver / shaft are built properly. For the 505, which is what I've ordered, the optimum head weight is around 190-195. One of the reasons some people haven't liked the Autoflex shaft is that the head they are using is too heavy, it can make the shaft unstable and inconsistent. I can't wait to get mine and tinker with it. Larryd3 and cksurfdude
edingc
Just checking in to reiterate a point. While I have not gotten any launch monitor numbers to prove this, I am longer with the AutoFlex without feeling like I'm swinging any harder. Based on my Mevo numbers at the range, my swing speed has actually come down a little bit since winter, and I might top out at 110-111 MPH now. I had a lesson yesterday and hit the driver pretty well this morning feeling nothing more than "nice, easy swings" and making sure I turned enough in my backswing. Results were: No. 3: 263 yards, slight fade, finished just barely in the right rough. Allowed me to go for the green in two. No. 5: 260 yards, pulled left going up the hill and hit a tree. Had to punch out. No. 7: 265 yards, pretty big fade that was blocked out by trees. Probably over compensated for hitting it left on No. 5. Had to hit a low runner up the fairway. No. 9: 241 yards, pulled left, hit grove of trees and ricocheted backwards. Was not a good swing, but got lucky and could hit over the trees up toward the green. No. 14: 280 yards, just right of fairway. Beautiful swing, longest drive I've ever hit on this hole. Led to a perfect layup on the par 5. No. 15: 261 yards, majorly uphill short par 4, kind of bunted driver that I overdrew. Was hole high though. No. 16: 284 yards, downhill. Didn't actually hit the ball all that squarely, but this was a great example of the forgiveness of the AutoFlex. Just barely in the left rough. No. 17: 315 yards, downhill. I hit the sweet spot and unfortunately was aimed just a bit right for the shot shape (slight fade). I ended up blocked out by a line of trees, but I absolutely killed this one. No. 18: 283 yards, uphill. Again, not my best swing as it was a bit heely and pulled left. As you can see, the driver was pretty good to me coming down the stretch. Nos. 16, 17, and 18 are also the most "open" holes (if my home course has such a thing), so I find it's a bit easier to swing away. I don't think I'll be selling the stock Rogue White anytime soon, but I am also not seeing a reason to switch back, either. I'm finding the AutoFlex to be very forgiving and the perceived distance gains are crazy. ejgaudette, fixyurdivot, MattWillGolf and 6 others 9 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B.
