I've been promoting the site to a fellow golf degenerate I know in Charleston SC. He hasn't been playing much because his wife is battling cancer, but at one point he was a 3 handicap. We'll see if he's among the noobs. Drove up to Raleigh for work today. Instead of going to the hotel, I went straight to the NCSU course and got a big bucket of range balls. Worked my way from GW to 9 iron to 6-i to 7-wood, 3w and the big dog, and was fairly pleased with the results after not hitting any balls for 10 days or so. Contact was better than recent rounds with the 3w; maybe it heard me threatening to dump it for a newer, sexier model. The drives I hit varied between decent carry and the low bullets; I think the best ones were carrying 180-200 in the air, which is about all I can hope for at this point. Hit some straight balls, a few pushes, a few baby draws/fades and a couple of pulls with short irons, but mostly straight. At tomorrow's lesson I am going to ask the instructor to see what he can do to find me a few more yards. I was happy to see that my contact with the driver, as indicated by the dimple marks left on the face, was generally no more than 1 cm off dead center, and frequently was right on the button. My lack of distance is not because I'm missing the sweet spot, it seems. Then I wound down hitting my 54, 58 and 64 degree wedges, with the final shot an intentional 15-yard flop. At least I can hit one of those off a worn-down range mat, which I guess would qualify as a tight lie. Weather was mid-40s and rather breezy, but with my Brora Golf Club sweater it wasn't uncomfortable at all once I put my glove on the left hand. Last night was a fun time playing 9 holes at night with a family friend who hid his birthday from us (he's scared of the big 6-0). Heading for Golftec after work for another lesson. They're not really equipped there for short-game teaching; you'd have to book a separate lesson on course for that. I think there will be a nap before that; my hotel only offers the finest in concrete sleeping facilities. Question is, where do I take the nap?
