Popular Post EnderinAZ
Played a decent round today though it took me a couple of down hill putts to get a handle on the very FAST greens! That and the wind was up, way up. Gusting between 20 and 25 mph. Those gusts took my ball for some unintended trips. But, my short game work with Pelz's finesse swing is really starting to pay off. If I am 55 yards off the green behind a bunker bordering a narrow green I know a nine o:clock sand wedge with an open face will drop and quickly stop on the green, and that is a great confidence builder. Putting was very good too. So shot a 9 over 82 with only one double and one birdie. BallsLeon
13 hours ago, Dweed said: Previously in years gone past, I had seen a score reversal in mid Sep thru early Nov when I had to stop playing. Last year though, my best really pretty much ended with the season ending. I curious and can't wait to start the new season in a few weeks or maybe days???? My question is, how long do you take before you start to feel that you're in pretty good new season form. Ready to take on all comers. For me it has usually taken 4-6 weeks of weekly play, which seems to correspond with mid May here in central MI. How about you all? 3-4 weeks sounds right to me, I only play a round a week and had a few weeks of not keeping score before I shot under 100 again. Curtis Atkinson
Got out for a quick 9 yesterday. Game was total inverse of what it usually is, hitting every fairway off the tee and then being terrible around the green. If it's not one thing, it's the other. 48 (+12) 7/7 FIR (100%) 4/9 GIR (44%) [Last 4 greens] 19 putts (2 1-putts, 4 2-putts, 3 3-putts) Highlight: Obviously drove the ball really well today, hitting every fairway, finishing up with a birdie on 18 Room to improve: Just got to get more consistent. Popular Post Syks7
I think I'm really going to like these ZX7s. Had kind of a cold start with them while I figured out how to play them and what distances I should be play for on each club. They're about 1/2 a club longer for me at the top end, = in the mids, and marginally shorter at the bottom end since the 9, PW, and AW are much more traditional lofts. I went 6 over through five holes then caught fire and finished 3 over for the final 13 holes. That's with two three putt bogeys on the back 9 One of the three putts was not paying attention from 3 feet and the other was gunning it by the hole trying to get a birdie. Ended up 41/40 81. I knew I was playing well, but wasn't paying attention to the score. The better part of the day was that I played with an older friend of mine who's come off a bad couple years of health. He played 18 holes with me for the first time in over two years. Popular Post Triple_Putt
Was able to walk 9 this morning before the weather came in, the threat kept everyone away as I was basically alone on the course which was phenomenal. Shot +8 which was a great start to the season for me. One very lucky birdie on an extremely long putt. My iron play was great but with the wedges around the greens I was terrible. Lucky enough to have plenty of time to go ahead and replay a few bad shots after I finished the hole out. Very thankful the weather held out and it was actually sunny half the time. I need to try and work on taking more photos while I play, but I honestly keep the phone away and focus on play especially on a day like today with nobody around. Looking forward to a possible Easter Day round if things pan out. MaxEntropy
Got out this morning with @DiscipleofPenick after about an hour and a half frost delay. By the end of the round it was up to around 48 — perfectly acceptable for this time of year, especially since we were walking. I drove the ball decently except for one ball OB that was supposed to be a fade bit didn't fade. Irons were, shockingly, the star of the show. Short game and putting decent. I ended up +9 for the round (17 holes — one hole was closed as they are resodding to green). A full 18 likely would have been a +10 81, especially given how easy the hole we had to skip is. Worst thing was a double and triple on back-to-back holes. Was definitely leaking oil on the last 3 holes — my hips, glutes, and back started to really tighten up on me and I struggled to finish a swing. Good day, though, and looking forward to getting this season going. Popular Post Preeway
Was a great weather day for golf. Cool 50° when we started and hit 64° as we walked off 18. Only 8/14 fairways but only a couple of the misses were bad misses. Otherwise I was still in position to hit a shot into most of the greens. Hit 12/18 greens which was better and most of my misses were close enough to get up and down. Just didn’t have my best short game today. Putter was also hot and cold with 33 putts which is a little more than my normal. Driving game was much better and 3 wood off the tee was smoking. Driver on #1 was 320 and 3 wood on 15 was 285 (down wind). Course was still in early spring conditions which made it harder to score but morning to complain about a 73. Popular Post Erin B
It warmed up after I played 9. Shot a stinking 40. It’s snowing again! Yes, those white specs in the picture are snow flakes. Popular Post rkj427
Was able to get out for 9 holes this afternoon on a windy but sunny 50-degree day here. Course was jam packed, they had 5 groups of 20 players scheduled during the morning, and they played a scramble format, so that added to the time each group played each hole. Myself, I knew it would be slow going into this, so not a big deal, was happier to get out than anything else. Played reasonably well, although I did not plan to keep score or stats, but SWMBO came along and decided it would be a good thing to do so we wouldn't push or be waiting on each and every shot. Hit 6 of 7 fairways, missed the opening hole using a 4 iron off the tee, but hooked left into trees and then a punchout to hit that green in 3, and then proceed to 3 putt on slow and uncut greens for a double. Righted the ship, and only had 2 bogies where I missed the green. I hit 6 of 9 greens in regulation, so iron play was good too. Rain moving in tonight and forecast doesn't look good again until next weekend. Hoping at this time to get a full 18 in next weekend. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
I knew most had off for Good Friday so I got up early and hit the course around 7:45. It was a chilly 39 degrees when I left the house. There was a frost delay for the grounds crew so they were late getting going. They asked me to start on 5 so I wouldn’t get stuck waiting while the crew mowed the greens. So I was out in front of them with unmowed greens and rooster tails off the ball on the greens that would make a bass boat proud. So 5 through 9 were tough. Only one bird but two bogies. When I got to the back 9 they were out in front of me. I was on a roll with 4 birdies and 1 bogey. Crazy how a mowed green, fresh pin locations, and no dew on the greens can change your round. After the 18th hole I went back and played 1 through 4 to get them all in. They were all pars. But at least my GIR’s are picking back up allowing me opportunities. I might just have to go play again tomorrow. This was my approach on 18. You’ll have to zoom in a bit. Popular Post EnderinAZ
Gorgeous day today with the temps in the low 80s when we finished the round today. Had a decent 41/43 for an 84 and a chipped in birdie. Driving was awesome today with 7 shots over 260. One topped out at something over 280. That's where the edge of the pond was and I am pretty sure I could see my ball just my golf bag fishing rod wasn't long enough to reach it. Then a drop (2) a poor pitch that caught the slope of the green and rolled off(3). Ack! The ball was in what looked like a lawn mower tire track, but no relief. A hail Mary chip on that sailed a whole 8 feet or so(4). A 40 foot putt that went 55 with the help of the green(5) and finally 2 more putts to get down for a crowd pleasing triple(7). Everything else today was better than that. But man those long drives were fun and pretty good distance for being 66. ParFore74x
This morning’s round was quite the challenge. Really struggled with ball striking for my approach shots today. Popular Post cksurfdude
Played 9 yesterday and wish I could report a great round, but hopefully in the near future..! Was not striking the ball well and kinda struggled tee to green .. plus chipping/pitching onto the green also could've been better .. but at least when I finally got onto the green 8/9 first putts were good, eg leaving the second ones at 3ft or less. Had bogeys and doubles and one (sheesh) triple on the shorter Par3 where I drowned the first tee shot Walked off all my first putts (the old eyes don't have the sharpest depth perception anymore); shortest was 3ft and longest, on the last hole where I left my pitch onto the sloped green and into the wind way short, was about 45 ft mostly uphill - left that first putt way short too and 3-putted... Popular Post Jmikecpa
Played a course today that for years I have wanted to play and just never drove out to play it. Liked the layout a lot and will go back when the weather warms up a bit and it is not blowing 30mph. Overall I played decent and shot +2 74 in what felt like a matter of survival on the front 9. The back nine turns inland off the water and it was a lot more playable…and a touch warmer. Iron swing feels good and my short game is coming around. Popular Post BallsLeon
Walked Swope Memorial (an A.W. Tillinghast design) yesterday with an oddball group; 3 other solos (2 carts, 1 other walker, and a ride along spouse). Played from the whites (Par 72, 5770yds, 68.3/124) an ended up shooting a 94 (48 out/46 in), wasn't all clicking yesterday especially my approach shots with my wedges. Shots with my wedges were on the right line, but I was catching the leading edge or something for these low stingers that would clear the green. As far as highlights: 33 putts/4 up-&-downs for another sub-36 putt round, chipping practice with 56°/60° (rough/tight lie respectively) making me more confident inside 50yds, and when I'm not drop-kicking my driver I am hammering the ball (for me) hit some balls past 300yds total. Above all else, couldn't have asked for better weather for a walk! 65°F & Edited March 31 by BallsLeon MattF, rkj427, William P and 7 others 9 1 Quote Driver : Rogue ST Max LS, 10.5° loft, MCA TENSEI AV White 65g, Stiff flex (44.5", Draw setting) 3-Wood: Rogue ST LS, 15° loft, MCA TENSEI AV Blue 65g, Reg flex (42.25", tipped 0.5") 3-Utility: 699 Pro V2 Utility Satin, 18° loft, HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX 80g, 5.5 flex Irons: T200 6i-GW, 27°-48° lofts, Nippon Modus3 120g, Stiff flex (+0.25”, 1° upright) Wedges: Indi FLX S-Grind, 52°/56°/60° lofts, Dynamic Gold Spinner 115g, Wedge flex Putter: King Vintage Sport 60, SteelFiber P125 shaft (34"), Quad Tour Taper grip Bag: Ultralight Pro, Ski Patrol/Black Push Cart: Nitron, Black/Red Rangefinder: Bushnell Tour V5 Shift 2023 MGS Forum Review: Sugar Golf Balls (Final Review Posted) 2023 MGS Forum Review: Sycamore 009 Mini Putter (Final Review Posted) 2024 Unofficial Review: The "Putting Thing" by WhyGolf -TJ
Popular Post Indy_Oz
A little rain overnight and cooler temps with heavy cloud cover put off a lot of local golfers, including my playing partner.lol 42f when I teed off at 9:20am. Quiet course gave me all the time I wanted to play multiple balls and get some practice in around the greens. I played a TP5x Pix as my scoring ball, hit first every time, and a mix of TP5, Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X for additional practice shots once away from the clubhouse! I was hitting the ball nicely, particularly with the new G430LST driver and with wedges around the green and shorter approach shots. Striping a baby draw drive 300 yards to the middle of the fairway on the 1st hole wasn't expected at all! Either I absolutely pured it and it rolled on well on the fairway, or it kicked on from the cart path. Decent chance the latter helped based on my other drives. Dan Grieve's approach shot setup was working well with knowing my distances and having confidence. Putting was a big improvement over my recent rounds. Final score was 1-under par 35. But I don't hold much stock in the round as there was zero pressure to perform, no playing partner and I got to play plenty of additional practice shots. But as practice rounds go, I'm VERY happy. For a little 9-hole town-owned public course the greens were in great shape and rolled well considering they have been punched recently! The sun even started to put in an appearance for the last two holes. Below pic is my best chip of the day. Flag was 40 yards away on a taco shaped green. Landed just off the green on the right and rolled down to within 2ft for a birdie. Then did it again with another practice ball! Popular Post Kenny B
Today my wife and I teed off at 0900. Thought we were going to be alone, as there were not many cars in the parking lot. At the last minute we were joined by two young guys we have played with before; both can really hit the ball far… sometimes… and straight… sometimes!! Good thing our course has adjacent fairways without many trees. They both could use some short game practice!! Even though it was sunny, a brisk wind out of the north chilled me to the bone!! I struggled on the front nine putting on less than ideal greens that haven’t fully healed after aeration. I shot 42 (+5) with a double and didn’t get my first par until Hole #9… the #1 handicap hole!! However, I did make two birdies; one a one-inch tap-in, and the other a SW hole out from 60 yards, so my score could have been a lot worse!! The back nine was better with pars and a couple of bogeys until the par 5 #18… decent drive, poorly hit FW that worked out OK. Had a SW into the green; came up short and landed in the bunker next to the lip only 3 yards from the green. The green is elevated and standing in the bunker, I can’t see the putting surface. I could only get the ball up and out but left it in the rough by the green. Chip and 2-putt for my double. A mediocre 39 and total of 81. The two guys were impressed with my play, even though it was mediocre. I was always on the green closer than they were… mostly from better chipping! One came up to me and checked my bag looking at my irons… "What are these blades? Mac—-Gregors?” Never heard of them. He just ordered new P790’s. Popular Post sirchunksalot
A buddy of mine was texting me about his round this morning, so I got bit by the bug and decided to get out and play 9 at Flagstone this evening. The course wasn't really crowded, but there had just been 3 groups tee off on the front so the owner gave me the choice on which nine to play and I decided to go off the back. We all know I hate the 10th hole, so I decided to play from the green tees and had a better look and less pressure on the tee shot. I made only my second par on that hole after a decent drive and an 8 iron short of the green. I chipped it close and made the putt. Overall, I shot 54. I started out par, double, bogey. The double was the result of hitting a 4 hybrid too solidly OB and I lost another ball on 12 and 13. On 12 I pulled 5 hybrid into the woods and dropped another ball that ended up 7 feet from the hole and made the putt. Hole 13 ate my lunch, I lost a drive left, hit a monster hybrid (207) 35 yards from the flag and then proceeded to blade a chip 40 yards over the green, duff two chips, then pull the putter to just get the ball on the green. I two putted from there for a +6 10. My chipping is garbage right now and I have no confidence with a wedge in hand. I did putt extremely good today, I had 16 total and was only a half shot from performing like a scratch handicap. I can't complain with the way I scored after losing 4 balls and taking 4 shots to get in the green from 35 out. It was an enjoyable day and I'm happy to see overall improvement in my game.
