Golf this trip was not a priority for me, the people were.

And from that standpoint it was truly an awesome experience.

I just want to repeat that I am not a golf instructor and I just love the game.  Any discussions we had about how to swing a golf club, chip (I should never give out advice on this area of the game), or putt is just my opinion and I am not responsible for any improvements or failures you might have.    

Highlighted for emphasis - and also to point out that even when I go to a PGA HOPE session the teaching pros who are golf instructors always welcome the words I feel need to be said to complete the ideas being presented and they always thank me for contributing something important they were glad I mentioned.  I don't look for the opportunity to speak but just as happens in our conversations, when something feels important to contribute it began with taking the courage to say something and the response and welcome to what I said proved it was the right thing,

Now they refer to me as a graduate mentor and invite me to comment, and I am not a golf instructor either, @cnosil Chris your words are always welcome and appreciated

Love it, because as we all know, golf like so much in life has situations that require creativity and ingenuity to solve.  There is no one answer for anything starting with how each of us has to figure out what swing works for us (no different than learning to walk) but sharing what we have worked out, now that is enough fuel for a lifetime of conversation, good thing we already got started!

I stayed at my house as @rkj427 mentioned…was a late addition thanks to the effort by @Golfspy_CG2, which I am truly thank for!

It was truly amazing to meet up with the other spies and play some golf, I feel like I missed out on a lot by not staying with the group.  Seeing pictures from the evening activities was great, but kind of wish I was there for that part!

Okay, get ready for a pretty large photo dump.  I've got stuff in here from Saturday as well as a lot of Sunday, too.  I'll try to caption them, but for the most part, it's just fun to revisit the pictures and the moments that inspired them. 

If you haven't been able to join one of the MGS Outings (and this was my first), I cannot recommend it enough.  It's a truly inspiring time, and I genuinely left with my cheeks (my face cheeks, you gross people) aching from smiling for seemingly 4 days straight. 

Our waiter on Friday and Saturday night said something pretty profound, and I'd like to share it before getting to the pictures.  He had asked us how we all knew each other - were we friends from college or something?  On the face of it, we don't look like a typical group of "golf buddies," given the disparity in age and accents (Hey Y'all!! I'm looking at you, @JohnSmalls and @sirchunksalot  ) - and yet it was clear we all knew each other and were friends.  @GolfSpy BOS semi-jokingly said "we're strangers who met on the internet."  That got a laugh from the group, but then our waiter said "I like that.  In my country, it is very hard to meet new friends once you're an adult.  It is very lonely."

And I have not stopped thinking about that sentiment since.  How often, as grown people, do we get to make a new friend?  It's SO hard as an adult to make a new friend - hell, it's hard enough to hold on to the ones you've got, what with busy schedules and diverting lives.  

And here I was, sitting at a table, with 7 or 8 other guys who were strangers I'd met on the internet, and yet here we all were - friends. 

I'm grateful for this community.  Thanks for sharing it with me.

(Like a painting - this is from the Plantation course, which was filled with Colonial-style houses, as well as some actual Colonial-era artifacts.)

I told my wife I got invited to golf with some friends and had to explain to her these were friends I had never actually met as she looks at me with a confused loo on her face!

I try to keep the camera handy - the thing I'm a little disappointed in is that I didn't get any (aside from one shot of the kingsmill logo on the side of the hill by 18) drone footage - but, it is what it is.  I've learned from this outing that if I really want to have great video footage, I need to skip a round and hang out with everyone, get footage of THEM playing, and then play the other rounds with just the camera handy.  

But it was a hell of a fun way to learn the lesson

FANTASTIC photos, @GolfSpy SAM. The way you lead into those photos with the friends from the internet story is so awesome and makes the photos that much better. So true, this community is such an awesome place full of incredible people. I am feeling that I HAVE to make the next outing to meet the many friends I have gained here. I imagine it in my head as seeing an old friend where you pick up right where you left off. Which is crazy to think about, but just seems like it would feel the same.

no way could I match @GolfSpy SAM photos - those are out of this world good. Fan-freakin-tastic job... and to think you had to put the camera down and then go hit a golf shot... whew! VERY NICE JOB. 

nevertheless I have a few photos on my camera that I'll drop in here. Wish I could have taken more but happy to see looking through this thread that there were others who did a great job of photographing and memorializing the event. 

I will echo what others have said - if you can make it work at all please come to one of these outings. the golf is great but it's the stuff before, after, in the carts, around the clubhouse that really really sticks with you. 

I'm going to steal and massage a little from the great George Strait and his song "run"...

Absolutely love this time of night. This was the 17th at RNK and it's tucked so far behind the trees you couldn't even see it from the fairway for a long approach shot.

Oh the golf you were wondering about....

Overall I played reasonably well - for me - and came away from the trip with a boost of confidence that yeah while I still suck at the game I *can* get around a golf course.

Three of four days played the front 9s better vs the back halves; possibly 'cuz I mostly typically play just 9 at home?

RNK .. 8 strokes better on the front (was definitely running low on gas on the back half...)

River .. started out struggling and asked @Shrek74 to stop recording my big numbers, and as it turned out started picking it up after that .. managed a bunch of bogeys plus an almost birdie on #16 and almost par on #17 and then almost a complete meltdown disaster on #18...

Plantation .. 7 strokes better on the front; this was the easiest course as I finished with a asterisk 91 (@EasyPutter called "Second Ball!" after I lost a tee shot so that means the first didn't happen and the second one is in play)

Woods .. only 1 stroke better but the difference here was more 3 putts on the front and more lost balls on the back .. 3 of 4 lost were not off the tee but on attempted layups or approaches...

@GolfSpy SAM and @StrokerAce  Absolutely fantastic pictures.   Jason that picture of you is marketing material, all you needed was a beer in your hand and KM could use you as a model for it's website.  

Great pictures of Jamie and JP as well.  I was sitting right between them, and Matt used his very instinctive photo journalists skills to say....I think I'll just skip over here and get JP.....Wise move, trust me....ha

I'll follow in the footsteps of Chuck aka @cksurfdude (cool guy btw, you're in for a treat if you ever meet him) and discuss how the golf went. 

I shot 124 at RNK losing six balls and having to hit 4 times out of one bunker. I told y'all, I'm not a good sand player. I played with a phenomenal group of Tom Kells, Robert Jason (I hope I spelled those last names right, guys), and Chuck. Again, I can't say enough about the group and I'm thankful they put up with me getting my money's worth with all the shots I took. 

I played a bit better at the River Course, shooting 112 and got to play my round with Kenny and Martha. They are such wonderful people and I has a great time getting to know them. Martha was a hoot and a good golfer and I'm glad she made the trip. 

I did hit my shot of the weekend on 18. I lost a ball right, hit my second shot left. I'm going to set the stage. I'm about 90 yards out coming down the stretch with two groups of our guys waiting up by the green. I pull PW and take aim, the ball soars through the air and lands on the green a little over a foot from the flag and the crowd goes wild. 

I continued my improved play on the Plantation Course shooting 109. I got to play with Rob (CG2), TJ, and Ryan. They were all great players and people. 

I took a slight step back on the Woods Course shooting 110 while enjoying the company of Ryan (my bucket hat brother from another mother), Kenny, and Martha. Again, just a great group of people with whom I shared a lot of laughs and good stories. 

I can't say enough about everyone who attended. I wish I could have gotten to know some of you better, but it was nothing but positive when I did get to talk to each of you. I'm hoping to make the next one so I can see y'all again!

Royal New Kent was a shot makers course for sure. One mistake can cost you. YouTube was my friend. I studied the course from the comfort of my home many times. I was happy coming in with a 78 especially after a 4-1/2 hour car ride. I found out that I should have studied the other courses as well. I had some unnecessary added strokes due to not knowing there was trouble over the hill. But that’s golf. To sum up I was pretty consistent with 78, 80, 83 and 83. 
Accomplishments:

1) I survived playing 4 days in a row.

2) Came in second on the guess your distance challenge. You hit a PW, 7 iron, and driver. You announced your distance before you hit any shot and the person with the lowest total deviation won.

3) Came in first in the hard rock challenge. You played the first three holes with a 2 piece Top Flight XL or a Pinnacle. Lowest score won. Boy some struggled with a crappy ball.

4) Came in 2nd in the lowest amount of putts in one of the challenge rounds with 28 putts.

5) I only lost 4 balls and one I could see but was to lazy to go get.

If you have ever considered going. You should. Don’t think twice and start putting money into your piggy bank now. I was so great to see everyone in person. Can’t wait till next year. 
 

To Matt and everyone that took photos, thank you. I get so wrapped up in the golf and fun I never think about it.

I'm going to get practicing now, I was hitting some shots out of the bunker at Woods and was getting the ball to come out nicely. I didn't get to really use it on the course there as the only bunker shot I had was pinned against the back lip. Good thing is, we have a couple of courses in Chattanooga that have bunkers and hopefully I can put it to good use.

So this question may seem a little trivial. However, I would like to know if everyone used paper cards, they used digital/tech , or a combination of both?

The groups I was in used the scorecards that were provided. I kept track on my watch. I think there were a few times we ditched the score after a little while because well... there were some bad holes and @GolfSpy_BEN turned his rounds into bunker lessons...

If you decide to do that Matt, I will take that round to be the assistant/grip/driver/gopher because that job will require your attention on the craft and a second to facilitate your craft.  Something I have experience with in my many talents.

Your last up and down may have been the most impressive. A nice 30 footer ... For anyone wondering Ben will be doing bunker sessions next outing.
