Right now, it's a 5 iron. We'll see how long that goes until it's the 6 iron.

It's the 5-iron for me as well.

I'd bet it's probably the 5-iron for most people, except for the few that carry a driving iron or 3/4 iron for long shots out the rough.

I think this is probably also in part because most sets either come as a 4-9 +1 wedge, or 5-9 plus 2 wedges. Plus, with the rise in Hybrids and Woods being more & more prevalent, the need for longer irons fades if you can get longer distance & more forgiveness from a Hybrid or a Fairway Wood.

My longest iron is my 6, my fitter suggested hybrids to replace the 4 and 5 irons. I still struggle to hit the 6, but after my last range session where I focused a lot on it, I'm starting to hit it better.

Despite the gray beard, you're probably too young to have hit blade irons there were SERIOUSLY unforgiving.

In fairness, a 6-iron then had modern 8-iron loft,
so in effect, it's a 4-iron with which you're struggling a bit.

I wish that I could hit hybrids.
They seem to have gotten into my head.
They just won't work for me.

The longest iron in my bag is my 20º driving iron which I don't hit from the fairway.
5-iron is my longest fairway iron.

My first set were blades, I wanted to get into golf and at the time my brother bought me a set at a yard sale that consisted of the odd number irons starting at 3 iron. I had a lot more swing speed back then and could actually use it off the tee. I was a bit better with it at the time than the 1 wood, couldn't hit that thing straight to save my life. Of course, I couldn't hit anything too well in the beginning stages.

It's typically a 5 iron. I do have a driving iron that goes in the bag on super windy days.

My longest iron is a 6.   I own a 4 and 5 but don’t hit them consistently enough to put them in the bag.  Hybrids replaced the long irons.  No driving iron.

my opinion is play the clubs that enable you to perform best on the course.

Agree with @cnosil, and for me I play with 4 iron through wedges, as they fit the yardages I need to play reasonably well.

Par 3's here typically are long enough to use long irons versus a hybrid or fairway wood for my current game and distances.

Will use 4 iron off of fairways or tees. Always have been decent iron player.

21 or 17 degree driving irons depending on the course. Talking traditional irons then it’s a 5 bent one degree flat. I find I can get my 6 out to 205 so having my 5 be able to get to 215/220 is more useful on par 5’s since I don’t play any par threes that get out of 6 iron range. Newer clubs so the lofts are strong already haha, I think my current 5 is the same as my old 3 iron

I play 5 iron through 56* wedge. I have a 4 and play it sometimes depending on course conditions but generally stick to the 5-6 iron as my longest irons. I play two hybrids to get the 220-250 yardage. They’re more forgiving. My thought process is why make golf any harder than it has to be? Hit clubs that give you the most success. Long ago I used to play 2 iron-wedges. Not able to anymore.

Mine is a 4 irons and I've gotten some "sage wisdom" from a few on the range that I shouldn't have it in the bag. I was part of the Haywood CB/MB irons testing and due to the lofts of the Haywood set that 4I is 23 degrees and I hit it better (length, spin rates, decent angle and dispersion) than the Callaway Apex '19 5I it wound up replacing. Just goes to show that sometimes the number stamped on the club means less than the actual specs of the club.

Currently in the bag:

Cobra Aerojet LS 10* | Taylor Made Mini Driver 13.5* | Callaway Utility Wood 17* and 21* | Haywood CB/MB combo set (4-7 CB; 8-PW MB) | Edison 2.0 wedges 51*, 57* | LAB DF2.1 Broomstick 50” | Transrover bag

I still carry a 4 but don't use it very much. I actually hit my 5 iron about the same distance and do it much more consistently. I have been trying to get rid of the 4 iron but the 4 hybrid I got needs a stiffer shaft and I haven't decided if I want to buy a new shaft for it yet or just get a new hybrid altogether.

Mixed bag of goodies: Taylormade M2 driver, Titleist F15 3 wood, Nike 5 wood, Mizuno 923 Hmp irons, Cleveland zipcore wedges and Odyssey 3 ball putter.

6i for me. My old set was 6h-7i and I practically begged my fitter to repeat that set up but he refused based on his data. Hybrids are my jam, so I was shocked (and mildly annoyed) at his suggestion. But the data was right. And shock of all shocks, the expert club fitter was right - quelle surprise!

So it’s 3/4/5h and 6i for me.

Absolutely.  I used to game a 3 wood and the 2 hybrid, then into 3-PW, etc.  my personal testing shows that I have zero use for a 3 wood.  I loved it off the tee, (Henrick) if you all remember was its name.  I never once took a swipe with it from the fairway that had good results.

Im still on the fence with this new 2 hybrid I just got as well.  It is a rocket launcher, but I’m not going to use it from the fairway.  So, essentially I have 3 of the tee clubs, Driver, 2H, 2i.  I will use the 2 iron from the deck, but that is on long par 5’s.  This is anti “No laying up”, but I’ve found in my game that I would rather be in front of the green with a well placed ball rather than going for it and ending up in the 💩 and if it rolls up onto the green somehow, cool.  Those are on long long ones.

Mine is a 5 iron and it hardly gets used, I tend to go into my 4 hybrid or 5 wood as they are easier to hit. I'm tempted to drop it and add in a wedge between by Cobra Ltdx GW and my 54 as it leaves a bit of a yardage gap.

Currently a 5 Iron, but on windy days I will use my 4 iron off the tee on non driver shots since my 7w goes to high and 3w just really doesn't like me. Going with a 2i 2H like @Shankster has seemed very appealing, especially with windy season around the corner

For me, it's 2 iron - an original Tommy Armour 845 with an extra stiff shaft. It was originally my Dad's, and it was passed down to me about 25 years ago...it's never left my bag.

I don't know if it's the familiarity or some magic my Old Man put on it, but if I need to find the fairway, hit a stinger off the tee or the ground, or keep it low out of the trees, this club is almost always automatic. I know I can get more distance if I upgraded to something made in this century, but I'm not sure I can replicate the feel and confidence I have in that one club.

+1. Meaningless question these days. What used to be a 2i loft could be stamped 2, 3, 4 maybe even 5 today.

Sort of like asking ‘what did you hit’ after another player - may or may not tell you anything.

I always get all the clubs available in any set of irons I buy from lowest to highest lofts. Hate hybrids. YMMV

Nothing wrong with that at all IMHO. If you look at my signature I have very few clubs made in this century. Right now I did add my old V-Steel 9 wood but I do carry and hit my old blade 5 iron. I can still hit the 4 iron but the 7 & 9 woods are more versatile, If it does get windy here since I only now carry 12 clubs I can slip in My Old Eye2 1 iron, my blade Tommy Armour 985 1 iron or a bent back Hogan Apex 2 iron. In all truth I cannot hit them like I once did but can hit a little head high cut wind cheater that will roll out to 195 or so
