Was probably the third or forth round when I started playing. I hit a drive to the right edge of the fairway on a par 5. I got to my ball to discover it in a sizeable divot. I took my old, second hand Tight Lies 3w and punched it out low and straight to the front edge of the green. Chipped it close and one putted for my first ever birdie.

I was 9

330y par 4 second at Birch Bay GC

Sliced driver half way down a hillside

Nutted 3 wood second to a foot on front of green

Proceeded to drain a good 45-50 footer

This moment I will never forget. I can document my second bird too, it's that burned in as well.

...erased from my memory by all of the bad holes I've had since!

Sad, but true. Eagles I remember, birdies I do not unless they are recent.

Cool, but let me tell you about the eagle on 18 last week!

About 500 yds, uphill, dogleg left.

Hit a solid drive about 260 to the right side, hit a perfect 3- wood with a draw about 240, 15 feet from pin. Curled the putt downhill with about a 3-foot break to the right dead into the cup.

It was my first round ever. 1994, Middle of summer at the Custer Hill Golf Course on Ft. Riley, Kansas. A brand new private with nothing to do and no money. Two of my buddies said they would buy all the beer if I tried to play. Of course that was all it took.  When we step onto the tee box at 4, I am already shooting 35! But I do have beer, so it isnt a total loss.

4 is a dogleg left, downhill. 360ish from the tee. Small creek in front of green. My two buddies shoot down and end up 50 yards from the creek. Both in position for a nice wedge shot. I, on the other hand, go about 130 yds 45 degrees right. That puts me on the fairway adjacent to our hole, 20 yards above my fairway and about 45 yards above the green.

As I quickly did on the first three holes, I grabbed a beer and headed to find the ball, telling the guys to go ahead. By the time I found my ball, my buddies were putting out. I reached into my bag and grabbed what I thought was the right club. I am a bit over 200 away and 40 yards above the green. I hadnt hit over 150 all day.  I sit my beer down and take what I was sure was a professional looking golf stance. Then took a swing like I was aiming for the fences at Yankee Stadium.

You know how in the movies time slows down. Well I thought I was in a movie. My first thought was DAMN, I did pretty good. Then I thought that this was the best shot of the day for me. Finally the lightbulb came on over my head as it does so often in cartoons and I became aware that I might hit my friends. As I thought how goofy I felt actually screaming FOUR!! I felt even better as my friends hit the ground the same was we did during grenade practice. The ball finally lands on the fringe, rolls out about 25 feet or so, sitting 18 inches from the cup.

Instead of yelling at me, my friends realised what I had done and in true soldier fashion, both saluted my with a beer. I smiled like a kid on Christmas all the way to the green. After my tap in, my friends patted me on the back and I can remember thinking that this game isnt so hard!

The rest of the round I think my best was a triple bogey. I didnt really mind until my buddy told me back in the clubhouse I shot a 157!

Daytona Beach Country Club 2007 18 years old... I was hitting a rented set of clubs and launched a perfect shot to 3 foot from probably 150. I lot the rented left handed putter so had to use a righty putter. Ended up draining the 3 footer.

My first eagle was with my dad... I holed out a 85 yard lob wedge in Myrtle Beach. Closest I've ever been a hole in one is a matter of feet and I've hit a few flag sticks at various heights.

On a Sunday in the '90s on a 2 week business trip to Livermore, CA.  We had the day off, and the guys I worked with needed a 4th, so I went along.  Never played before.  It was a very, very long day but I managed to birdie a par 3.  That was all it took and I was hooked.  At least I know who to blame for all the money that I have since spent on this game!

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
