Ping G430 3 Hybrid

I've only heard good things about G430s and have been convincing myself I don't need a new hybrid for so long but I finally caved. Totally worth it after one session on the range. Just an amazing club.

Won a gift card to Golf Galaxy, don't really need anything from there, but... was really intrigued by the Garmin Approach Z30 Rangefinder's Range Relay feature (see MGS write-up here: https://mygolfspy.com/news-opinion/first-look/garmin-z30-rangefinder/), so I combined that gift card with my other Dick's rewards to get it pretty cheap. 

Might do a more thorough review/comparison later, but brought it onto the course alongside my CaddyTalk CUBE, and have some initial impressions: 

Compared to the CUBE: Garmin has far fewer settings/features, but that could be a good thing. It's really just a basic tournament mode feature to turn off slope, but also has Bluetooth connectivity to the phone (which is how Range Relay works). When shooting a distance, the Garmin is way easier to lock onto the target, and also gives (IMO) better visuals to show slope. Then there's accuracy...I think I need to go clean the lenses on the CUBE and retry, but the CUBE seemed to be the outlier (including Z30 plus two unnamed rangefinders from others in our group). Garmin and the others were consistently within a yard or two of each other; CUBE was often 3-5yds off, mostly short, including slope/plays-like (in one case, we kept getting 149-playing-155 on the other devices, and CUBE got 148-playing-149 -- I even changed to the other slope setting on CUBE, and it was still in the same ballpark). The CUBE still has the Caddy Mode feature, which is great, but if I start trusting accuracy... (I'm gonna try cleaning it, and if it's still off relative to others, maybe contact CaddyTalk to see if I got a lemon). 

The main downside? Well, this is on me -- I swear that my watch was in the compatible products list when I checked a few weeks back, but apparently didn't read closely enough. Only the Gen2 version of my watch supports Range Relay, while I have Gen1 (I guess that "cheap" price is going way up this Christmas!). I did get the Range Relay to push into my phone's Garmin Golf App, but I don't really use that app on the course, and it disappeared after a few seconds each time (I thought it was a "shoot flag once, have it stick in phone/watch" situation - hopefully if I do end up with a compatible watch, it will stick with the watch for the entire hole, not just for a few seconds).

Received the grip removal tool and replaced my 4 iron grip, it looks great, feels nice and soft but not mushy, almost like velvety rubber.

The tool wasn't as easy to use as I was expecting, but I'm 90% sure that's due to the mediocre grip solution that came with the grips. Next time I will use Varsol and see how it goes. 

I blew it on with no tape, but I think I may have to add a wrap or 2, I want to play with them first before I decide. They are regular size, but feel more in between a medium and regular, but my lower hand feels like it might need a little more girth...

I'm also deciding whether or not I want to re-wrap my shafts a different colour. The part of the shaft that rubs up against the slots of my bag started to wear through, so I cut off that section to replace it. I tried a piece of Black instead of White to see what how a 2-tone shaft would look. Not sure if I like it, I think I might just go all Black, but that means re-wrapping all my shafts which is a bit of a p.i.t.a..

I didn’t buy it, yet…I demoed a GT driver. It was the GT3. My club did not have the GT4 which is what I’m really wanting. It was hard but I passed on ol girl.

You may find you like that 3 more than the 4. The sound on the 4 is different.

Have one of these and it paid for itself pretty quickly.  I do grips for myself and a buddy and he's a tinkerer so being able to remove/reuse grips instead of just cutting them off has been great

Be very interested to hear how you like it with more use.  I've got a stack of gift cards and plan to put them towards the Z30. I've got an approach S62 so I'm pretty confident that the watch compatibility won't be an issue. I'm particularly interested because the alternative I was considering is the Cube.  One of the courses I play is always CPO, and we get so much rain that regardless of where I'm playing I get stuck with CPO from time to time, so having something where I can shoot either once (Z30) or from the cart path(Cube), and then leave the range finder in the cart is appealing.  Thanks for this write-up!

The caddy feature on the CUBE is awesome - it comes in clutch even when not CPO (like if your cartner is on the opposite side of the hole or something). I really have no reason to move away from it, but always like trying different tech, so went for it with the Z30. I might actually carry both so I can have both features. 

I think I also misread the Range Relay feature initially (considering I misread watch compatibility, are we surprised by this?). I thought it was saying that you can shoot the flag once and then your watch will track where the flag is from then on (e.g. on a 375 par 4, shoot the flag from the tee and then your watch takes it from there), but really all it says is that it shows hole location on the green on your watch. Still a cool feature, I just overhyped it in my mind.

They are great looking and 100 less than a scotty... but I digress. 

Full disclosure I've always been a titleist woods are very good not great guy. That's reserved for wedges and irons. But these new drivers are great. As like all clubs they won't be for everyone and you need to get fitted. Most of us saw noticeable increases in ball speed. However at 650 and 850 for a premium upgraded shaft, it may not be worth it to some.

Yeah I just did the same thing with a g430 4 hybrid like 2 months ago on this thread. And I was switching out a g425, totally worth it. And don't worry about your money, you can't take it when you're gone. So enjoy it now.

Good to know because I was interpreting it exactly the same way, that I could shoot form the tee and have it "follow" on the watch. Definitely changes my perception of whether I should go with the Garmin or the Cube, And great point about the "cartner" aspect.  I'm usually looking at my watch and saying "it's xx yards from here so probably yy from there" so the triangulation would definitely come in handy.

Just making sure it's 100% clear -- that's just what I observed with the Garmin Golf app, but didn't make it to the watch. I have no idea how the watch will handle it, but if the watch handles it the same way as the app, it seems like a more in-the-moment reading, not something that will be retained/tracked as you move through the hole.

The Garmin laser rangefinder which performs best when it pairs with the Garmin watch sounds great, but the complete price point with both Garmins sounds crazy to me.  Hard to see me spending that kind of coin on that pair no matter how great it is.  I would rather buy a new GT driver.

So, an amazon company I've dealt with in the past for "testing" products reached out 2 days ago about a lite golf carry bag. They have always held up their end. (You buy, review, they reimburse you)

Well it arrived today, and it's pretty nice actually.  As soon as the review clears, I'll get my money back.  But honestly,  for $21 it's worth it anyway.

So the Cleveland head I pulled the BGT shaft off of was rebuilt with a black apollo bouble bend and a black leather grip and is all murdered out. To be honest, I preferr this putter to the Indi with the BGT. Just feels good and looks great to look down on.

 

 

Another putter I had to pick up with this Ben Hogan. It was priced real cheap as it had a 29" shaft. I just popped my UST Freq Filtered shaft on with the counterbalanced SS grip it and also really like it. 

 

 

 

Ill be selling the Indi/bgt based on the simple fact that I dont like looking down on it and after 4 rounds, I putted worse than I usually do each time.
