Putter weighting help

Recommended Posts

It's no secret that I struggle putting, but I think I have found one that is working really well for me, I get teased at the course, but I've been putting really well with it. The old Putt-Putt putter, or bullseye style putter, but I need some help, until I can come up with some cash to have something made, (which is possible), I need to add a bit of weight to the one I have, it's currently about 340g and I want to make it around 370-380, I know some of you tinker with this type of stuff from time to time what will be the best easiest way to add that much weight to he head of the club, or do you think that is too much to add, and maybe need to only add 10-20g. I'm looking to make it a bit heavier because I feel like it is too light, and I can't feel the weight o the head enough and I feel like I really have to strike the ball hard to get it to the hole, and consequently I am leaving putts short I fear of hitting them to hard. At this point looks don't matter, I am just tryin to add weight until I find something that feels right, then I will get something made.

You could always put several layers of metal tape on the backside of the bullseye.  It may look like crap, but you can get to 350 grm.

Getting that much weight with just lead tape is a ton of lead tape. 1/2" tape (about as wide as you could go on a bullseye type head) is 2 inches per gram. 20-40 inches for 10-20 grams. Might be better served going with a combination of tungsten down the shaft, porting it and replacing with tungsten rods, lead tape or a lighter grip.

Do you use a pistol grip or one of the fat models? Reason I ask is if you use an oversized superstroke, swap it out with a much lighter Salty grip would offset it some.

I've got the Winn 1.18 grip. I figured it would take a lot of lead tape to get what I am looking for, I may not be able to get the heavier weight I am looking for, so I might just add some lead tape to get a few grams, then wait until I can have something made. I know that Lamont at Mannkrafted has done a bullseye, at some point this season I will see if he can make one and get it a little heavier for me. Thanks for the input Foz, and Rookie. I just wanted to see if what I thought was going to be the case, I like messing with this kind of Stuff, so I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss some way to add weight that I hadn't thought of.

LaMont is a bullseye collector. If anyone is gonna make you one, he's an excellent choice

I looked up on his site and found a blogpost where he made one somewhat recently, and then I read on his site that if there is something you want, he is willing to look into it. So I am supposed to be getting a nice bonus from last year so it may work out that I can do something March April timeframe.

Well I found a way to add 36g to the putter, it has to do with a bit of scrap steel, I'm really just testing the weight to see if it is heavy enough, or do I need to add more. I really seem to like the feel of heavy putters, the heaviest I have used in the store is 380, I will be adding 36g, so it will take it to 376ish, which is pretty much right where I think I want it. We'll see, I will be attaching the pcs Friday, so I will use it Saturday and see if I line it, then I will be ready to have it made.

When I was a teen, my Granfather bolted a lead weight to the face of an old wooden shafted driver.....so he could swing it to warm up with.

By adding some steel bars I was able to add

.08lbs or roughly 36g it worked really well, again this is just an experiment of adding some weight to the head to see how much weight I want to add when I have one made, I really think that 375-380 in weight is what I am looking for. Not too heavy but heavy enough to feel the head.

Sent an email off to Lamont at Mannkrafted to see if he can work with me on the project, I'm in no hurry, so, I'm just looking forward to what he has to say.

Why wouldn't just roll your Franken-Bullseye??  Could there be a better conversation piece on the green??

I will be rolling the "Franken" for awhile, I won't be able to do anything with custom until the end of March. I did receive a response from Lamont. He has a brass one 380g sitting on the shelf waiting for a home, it has 4* of loft, I'm not sure on the loft, and I'm not sure about the metal, but A photo or 2 could help with the look. I do t use a lot of forward press with my putting stroke so I don't know how 4* of loft would be compared to 3* of loft

I've had my last 3 putters milled with 4* of loft. It works well for me.
