russtopherb
Hit a small bucket at lunch today, trying to figure out the D7 driver. On the good side, I think I’ve got ball position and tempo figured out. Had some really nice drives and I was going left instead of right which was a welcome change. On the down side, after warming up my irons were fairly garbage. I supposed that’s to be expected after hitting driver a bunch and not jumping around the bag, as one would do on the course. revkev
Can you explain more why you think this? I am not sure I agree. Chip and what I will call finesse shots dont seem to help with ball striking because the swing is too different. I can center strike these pretty consistently. Distance/partial wedges will help full swing since the swings are similar. I agree Putting doesn’t help ball striking. I think of Chips and pitches as mini swings - good chipping requires keeping your torso moving and the club synced up in front of your body just like solid full game contact does. edingc
After my lesson focused on driver yesterday, I figured I better go hit some balls to see if I could make it work. Left the range extremely happy after spending about half of a 60 ball bucket on the driver. Over 27 swings, I averaged a ball speed of 149.7 MPH, smash factor of 1.48, for an average carry over those swings of 241 yards. That included two drives on which my Mevo reported carry distance of 255 yards. I actually stopped hitting driver for a bit until I could move further down range because I piped three straight into the trees at the end of the range (whoops!). Now, just hoping I can take it to the course, and also hoping I can continue to strike my irons well alongside the driver. Now, just hoping I can take it to the course, and also hoping I can continue to strike my irons well alongside the driver. Went back to the range today at lunch for a small bucket to make sure this wasn't a fluke. Happy to see that over 19 "good" shots today with the driver, I averaged 148.5/1.5/240. I have a hunch that Mevo is underreporting club speed (it seems to miss CHS a lot, too) so that's why the smash was so high. I did hit a bunch out of the center of the driver but there were a few that registered 1.53 and 1.54 smash. I was made more happy by the three-straight push draws I hit right at my target with my 7-iron while I was finishing warming up. I've been placing an alignment rod in the ground about 5-7 feet in front of me on my target line and trying to sling push draws around the stick and back on line. I will place an asterisk by these numbers ("good shots" - as mentioned above). It was 87 degrees, and the range was in full sun. I hit about 8 7-irons and then about 15 drivers, switched to wedge for a few shots and then my bucket was pretty much emptied and I was full of sweat. I should have stopped but someone had left about 15 balls from their bucket in the spot next to me, so I grabbed them to try to better my driver numbers. I think I was just plain wiped at this point and I struggled some. My glove was soaked and I just couldn't get comfortable swinging any club from that point on. downlowkey, cnosil, bens197 and 2 others 5 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 3.6 / Anti-Cap: 9.9 (Last Updated Sept. 1, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. Rappers
It's been difficult practising whilst enduring the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK. Practice facilities only opened this week at my club. However, I have been to the local driving range and today I will be working on keeping the hands/handle of club in front during impact to promote a better impact position - dynamic loft. cksurfdude and revkev
Mtbryant01
Busy over this weekend, so I went to practice at my local course yesterday morning. I got on the 18 hole “short” course, which is all par 3’s. This is part of my game where I struggle the most off the tee at the moment. I feel like I try to muscle the shots and get quick with my upper body causing me to pull some shots. Yesterday allowed me to hit all different kinds of distances off the tee ranging from 100-205 yards. I really focused on smooth tempo all the way through my swing. I will be making this part of my practice more often. Only shot +7, so I can’t complain. ParFore74x
Haven’t been hitting the 5 iron well at all for a long time. I guess that you could say that it is a confidence killer. Decided to hit a few balls in the garage this morning and have a little talk with the 5 iron. With the help of a can of spray foot powder, I think that I found the problem. Holy heel/hosel shots Batman!!! That explains a lot. Wiped the club clean and resprayed for round two. Hard focus on my takeaway and limited myself to 1/4 swings to attempt good contact. Worked up to about a 1/2 swing and it was looking promising. I will definitely need to keep working on this for a bit. When I get beyond a 1/2 swing it starts to get out of wack again. russtopherb
My 14yo was disappointed he didn't get to go to the range with me yesterday, so I took him tonight. He's still getting used to being 6" taller than last season. When he gets the ball square, man does he kill it. I just let him whale away. He's not doing PGA Jr this year, which is a bummer for me. I worked on my backswing some more and thankfully things went a lot better than yesterday. I had the "feel" pretty much from the get go and by the second half of the bucket I was hitting my irons consistently straight... OK well still a little left but so much better than the wipey fades that plague me on and off. Heavenwood off the deck was great and I even hit driver fairly decently. When I accept the fade off the tee, I'm fine. It's when it gets out of control that it gets to be a problem. cnosil, cksurfdude, sirchunksalot and 2 others 5 Quote In my Big Max hybrid bag: ST-X 10.5* Kai'li Blue R Flex ST-Z 15* Kai'li Blue R Flex ST-Z 4h Linq Blue R Flex Halo XL 5i-DW CBX 54* & 58* ER5 Tour S
PMookie
It hit me late yesterday that, all-in-all, I just need to be better at impact with my irons, so I grabbed my small turf mat and just kept practicing the correct position at impact. I then worked backwards from there to get a feel of just “L-to-L”. I took this idea with me to the range today. I got a large and a small bucket and proceeded to hit about 30 balls with just 1/2 swings, working on JUST impact. I then began to lengthen the swing over time to hitting full shots. I know that if I could get back to working on getting into the right position at impact, I’ll be more consistent. At the end of the range work, after all the balls were hit, I did an old drill my coach gave me 5 years ago: slow motion swings. It always gives me that sense that I’m in the right positions all the way back, and all the way down. I’m going to be doing more work like I did today for the foreseeable future. cnosil
Working on full swing to correct fat and toe strikes. Comes down to back swing length and spine tilt/pressure. Have some at home drills to uses but took advantage of the pouring rain that started as I was wrapping up some testing and hit some 7 irons. If I can manage the backswing the contact significantly improves. Still have something going on with the swing as the toe hits were still happening fairly regularly. Swing tweaks that I started incorporating this weekend and associated drills seem to be a good fit and will definitely help dispersion and even add a little distance. russtopherb, Rickp, cksurfdude and 3 others 6 Quote Driver: G400 Max 9* w/ KBS Tour Driven Fairway: Paradym AI Smoke Max HL 16.5* w/MCA TENSEI AV Series Blue Hybrids: 915H 21* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype 915H 24* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype Irons: TR20V 6-11 w/Vizard TR20-85 Graphite Wedge: 54/12D, 60/8M w/Accra iWedge 90 Graphite Putter: Render w/VA Composites Baddazz Backup Putters: Sacks Parente MC 3 Stripe, Milled Collection RSX 2 Member: MGS Hitsquad since 2017
cnosil
Since PW was the test club for today I was able to incorporate some full swing work. Focus was on back swing length and downswing pattern to reduce fat shots and get more center contact. Key seems to be the path the club takes on the downswing and if I do it right, contact is great. Today was one of the best ball striking days I have had in a while. I did pull hook a few but less severe than I normally see. Have a series of practice drills to work on swing mechanics and sequencing that I will be doing while watching TV. cksurfdude, GolfSpy_SHARK, sirchunksalot and 2 others 5 Quote Driver: G400 Max 9* w/ KBS Tour Driven Fairway: Paradym AI Smoke Max HL 16.5* w/MCA TENSEI AV Series Blue Hybrids: 915H 21* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype 915H 24* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype Irons: TR20V 6-11 w/Vizard TR20-85 Graphite Wedge: 54/12D, 60/8M w/Accra iWedge 90 Graphite Putter: Render w/VA Composites Baddazz Backup Putters: Sacks Parente MC 3 Stripe, Milled Collection RSX 2 Member: MGS Hitsquad since 2017
GolfSpy_SHARK
Today hit the range. Eye opening. Was able to use some spray for contact area. Irons were perfect but driver WOW. Everything was same spot which is great but was heel side. Also worked on hip rotation. @B.Boston against better judgement sent me a great video on this from AMG and working on this to get away from my “humping” motion. It was awkward at first and will take a lot of time but it felt good today and felt like I made a little progress. Plenty to work on but admitting is the first step to recovery right? cksurfdude, GolfSpy_BOS, PMookie and 3 others 6 Quote Check out my reviews: G710 Irons Official Review I MC Shaft & V Series Putter Official Review 2022 Forged Tec's Official Review I Nitron Push Cart Official Review WITB: Weapons of grass destruction (link to WITB) Traverse is filled with all this shiny metal and tracked by RadSpeed 8* - MotoreX F1 6X SIM 3W - Project X HZRDUS Green U505 Driving Iron 17* - Project X HZRDUS Black SpeedZone 4H - Project X HZRDUS Black 2022 King Forged Tec's 4-PW - KBS $ Tape 130 48 (SM8), 52 & 60 (SM7) - Nippon Modus 125 S ER2VI PROV1X #19 Are you a veteran? Grit Golf
I’m in a Wednesday weekly clinic and today was awesome! We practiced flighting wedges and irons through a variety of hula hoops on the range then we switched to alternating draws, fades, and straight balls high and low.Our instructor ended by saying, even if you’re hitting all these on command, save the shaping for scrambles and the range. It was a ton of fun!Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy sirchunksalot, cnosil and cksurfdude 2 1 Quote “He’s a Cinderella story. A former assistant groundskeeper about to become the Masters champion. cksurfdude
Finally got a range session in yesterday; place was BUSY! Wore a mask going in and out (..and wondering if I should've kept it on the whole time?). Main goal: see if I could hit a driver. Mission not accomplished. Driver will continue to stay at home. (I've been teeing off with my 3W, or a hybrid, on the shorter courses or forward tees that I most often play.) Experimented with two drivers, and different settings on each. Was better with the F8 .. with extra loft and extra weight .. possibly in large part due to the shaft - same Tensei as in my 3W and 7W which I've generally been hitting well. I'm still .. literally .. trying too hard to "HIT" the ball, vs making a nice swing thru the ball and focusing on good contact. Anyway the good news is I alternated drivers with alternate turns with a 7i, PW or LW and most of those shots were reasonably crisp and mostly on-target. daviddvm, Rickp, PMookie and 2 others 5 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... ParFore74x
More garage time tonight to work on the 5 iron. Things are definitely getting a lot better. Worked from 1/2 swings to full swings and contact was pretty decent, hopefully it will transfer to the course well. Worked through the bag from lob wedge to 5W and everything went really well except for the first strike with the 5W, topped that one just a bit. It cleaned up quickly so I wasn't too worried about it. Definitely felt like a productive session. cksurfdude, GolfSpy AFG, Rickp and 3 others 6 Quote TSi3 10° w/ Mitsubishi Tensei 1K Black 65g TS2 15° 3W w/ Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black 6.0 70g 818 H1 21° Hybrid w/ Mitsubishi Tensei CK Blue 70g MP-18 MMC 2 iron w/ KBS Tour C-Taper S 120g JPX 921 HM 5-GW w/ Project X LZ 5.5 115g JB Forged 54° & 58° w/ Project X LZ 6.0 120g EV5.3 Black Official Tester Review Nitron push cart Unofficial review
