Taking a Break

Shankster

Recommended Posts

Well Ladies and Gentlemen.

I think I have practiced myself into sucking at golf again. Taking a week or 3 off from my beloved game. I almost feel like curling up in a ball in the corner. I was shooting in the 70's.... then all of the sudden I can't hit the broad side of a barn from 10 yards... literally.

This happens once a summer. I just look down and wonder why I am standing there. Everything just looks wrong. Arms, legs, hips, shoulders... even when I hit a good shot it's lacking distance.

I need to go see a pro. But I think they are booked up for the rest of the year or moved back to the UK...

The only thing I can do well right now is putt. This is pretty much devastating because I had another weekend of golf lined up this weekend, and had some really nice places lined up for the following weekend, rather than go putt myself around the course I'll save the embarrassment....

I can understand. Played 18 today and 3&4 putted every hole. Very frustrating

Awe buddy don't be so down on yourself. Try just playing half of what you planned with no warm up range time.

Also, be easy on your expectations this weekend. Just go out there to have fun

A break always helps me, I shoot my best golf right after a long winter, and the end of the season.

With myself I think I start thinking to much.

Hope you come back strong.

When I look back on really crappy rounds, I find that I was trying too hard, taking things too seriously, stuff like that. When I focus on primarily relaxing and having fun (as those of us who don't do this for a living should, IMO), I play better.

Haha this happens to me in the middle of the summer every year too - currently dealing with it right now.  But something clicked after my round today after watching a video and now I can't wait to get back to the range to work on it.

Hey don't give up as you can rest assure everybody on here has those down times not just once but some of us go through several of them during a golfing season. Gird up them loins, clear that mind, and get ya ass back out there!  Hell I shot 96 Tuesday and was totally loss with my swing.  It's like the sob disappeared completely however I know those rounds will be there.  I also know my swing will come back and like it went, it could come back over night.  Most of the time we are trying waaaaay to hard to swing that classy swing when we do better playing to our natural abilities. If you swing flat enough to knock your right butt cheek off and it works, so be it.   If your swing upright enough to knock your cap off so be it....   Quit thinking about what you are doing wrong.   Take a day or two at most and refresh your mind.  You got this!  Whup it  & don't let it whup you!  I'm going out there tomorrow after the worst ball striking day of 2017 and I'm giving them clap doctors I play with notice that I'm coming to whup that arse!

Ouch, it sucks when you go through those periods. Last week I had 2 range practice days when it felt like I was hitting more balls off the hosel than on the face. Then I played a round Friday afternoon and hit a couple of the most amazing hosel rockets I've ever produced. It was slightly embarrassing hitting a pitching wedge 50 yards right of the green. I almost took my buddies head off a couple of holes later, so I took a few days off, went out again yesterday and started again and everything seems to be back to normal again (Thank God!!). Sometimes a little time away does help.

Do you always play rounds of golf that mean something? I.e. Men's group, or tournaments, games that make you grind? If so, have you just tried to go out with a buddy or 2, have a couple beers, play golf, don't keep score, just hit the ball, have a few laughs and talk. Sometime you may need a break from thinking and grinding.

Usually play solo. But I'm out in the backyard crafting wedge shots everyday, for about 2 hours the 56° are married. It is usually my best club.

But I'm hitting them all timid and we know what happens when you start doing that.

I hardly ever play under "pressure". Just the snide comments from myself...

Took some video. Compared it to some "good" video and I can't see anything different... which is even more frustrating!

Sometimes times it's very hard to get out of our own way. Thinking can cause major problems, good luck with the time off.

I have an unplanned 2 week minimum break coming up. Happens almost every year though. Get busy with work and a trip to Lollapalooza will do me in.

I understand all to well, buddy. It's golf.... s**t happens. S

**t also has a way of going away as abruptly as it came. I was having the same issues not very long ago, Just weather the storm, it will be okay. ;)

Thanks for the encouragement. This one is tropical storm strength... hasn't been this bad since 2015 when I smashed that slider window...

Man, it's amazing what a ball width too close does.

As far as standing too close to the ball or having it too far forward/backward in the stance?

I run into this every once in awhile, usually a week or two off gives me a chance to clear my head from "swing thought demons" and I start back with a smooth free swing

What? It's the ultimate challenge. How well can I play without my A game?

Hey, why don't you do an instructional vid, like the one you were gonna post on YouTube. Switching gears and talking about the fundamental of things may reboot your missing mojo. Plus it's an awe practice for your mizuno reviews.

As you can see all your pals here don't want you to give up the game forever...oh wait! Taking a break? Hey sure. Feel better soon and we hope you find what's lost, or even better, new piece.

Albert,
