Sub70 golf

Recommended Posts

In any given round, I have up to three Sub 70 clubs in my bag (always have a 939X 21* hybrid and a 50* Raw 286 wedge; often have a 939X Pro #5 hybrid in place of my 5-iron).  I have also built a couple sets of Sub 70 irons for my customers (I’m a Professional Clubfitter).  First up was a set of raw 699 Pro irons with KBS C-Taper Lite shafts, more recently I built a combo set of 639CB/639MB irons with Nippon NS Pro 120 shafts. Both customers love their Sub 70 irons, and I am really loving my 939X hybrid and Raw 286 wedge; the jury’s still out on my 939X Pro #5 hybrid.

Driver: Callaway Paradym X, 10.5* with HZRDUS Black Gen 4 6.0 shaft

3/4-Wood: Tour Edge Exotics C722, 15.75* loft, 42.5” long, Mitsubishi Diamana D+ 82-S

Hybrids: Callaway Paradym X, 18* with HZRDUS Red 80 6.0; Sub 70 939X 4-hyb. (21*) with Project X Black 80-S

7-Wood (when I carry one): VERY OLD Callaway Epic 7-wood (20*) with ACCRA Tour-Z 85-S

Irons: Callaway Paradym set (5-AW), HZRDUS Gen 4 Silver75-S shafts

Wedges: Edison 2.0; 48*, 53* & 58* with KBS TGI 90 shaft in 48* and TGI 100 shafts in 53* & 58*

Putter:  Makefield VS mallet (all black, including shaft), 34", 67* lie angle (custom-fitted at Makefield Putters Fitting Center)

Ball: Maxfli Tour X or Tour S (2023 models)

I play the 699Pro iron, 4-AW with a few customizations to them. Played Titleist irons for a long time and never really thought I would make a change but Sub70 caught my eye after reading a bunch of positive reviews about quality, craftmanship, custom options, etc so I decided to give them a try. Talked with Jason about my game over the course of a couple of conversation and I pulled the trigger. All in for just under $700 compared to about $1700 from other models I was considering.

I could sing the praises of these irons for as long as you would like to listen. Superb quality and craftsmanship, confidence at address, and buttery smooth. They are point and shoot weapons that will make you smile.  After one solid range session, went to the course and hit 14 greens in regulation. Please don't ask how many birdies I had but safe to say, it was considerably less than GIR's.

Also play the 849 Pro driver and it is a keeper.  If your looking to make a change and want to try something a little different, give Jason and Sub70 a chance to win your business. You won't be disappointed.

Sub70 849D 9.0  EvenFlow Riptide 6.0 70G Stiff

Titleist TSI2 15degree  Mitsubishi Tensei AV Series 75 gram Stiff

Callaway XR 19 degree 5 wood that is a fairway finder.

Sub70 699Pro irons 4-AW, KBS Tour 120 shafts,  1 degree upright

Sub70 JB Raw wedges in 54 and 58 degrees

Odyssey O-Works 2 ball putter/Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft center shafted- whichever one isn't in "time out" at the time.

For what it’s worth to you guys, I’ve owned two sets of Sub70s. I had the 639cb/mb combo and now own the TAIIIs raw. I’ve had Miura, Mizuno, Ping and Wilson irons in the past. These feel as good as the Miura and Mizuno in my opinion. I game 4-pw with vokey wedges. Super happy with Sub70. Happy to answer any questions you may have about them.

How are the TAIII’s they are so beautiful looking and is my dream set. Just wasn’t sure I was ready for them and went with the 639 combo and can’t be any happier. They fell just as good if not better than my MP68’s I use to have.

And on a side note any of you rich guys that buys a new set every few weeks. I am open for donations of the TAIII’s. 😂

My first experience in fitting clubs with Sub 70 was the set of 699 Pro irons that I built for the captain of my travel team. He's a 5-handicap at our home course, and plays lots of competitive golf -- when I fit him for these irons in late 2020, he was playing to a USGA Index of 9.0, and lately he has shot a lot of rounds in the 70s, with an average differential of just under 5 (in my experience, it is extremely rare to see someone take 4 strokes off of their handicap in a little less than a year).  I already had a good first impression of Sub 70 Golf from a couple of other stock Sub 70 purchases that I had made prior to that fitting experience late last year, but Jason and his staff went far "above and beyond" on this occasion.

I had cancer surgery at the end of November, 2020 at just about the time that I was about to order the clubheads, etc. for those Sub 70 irons based on the fitting that I had done using four different 699 and 699 Pro iron head models.  Unfortunately, I developed a really nasty infection following that surgery and ended up back in the hospital in December, and then again for almost the entire month of January.  I contacted Jason Hiland in December from my hospital bed after my wife got the fitting results to me, and we shifted gears, having Sub 70 build the 699 Pro irons to the spec's that were derived from my fitting before going into the hospital. The irons were then shipped to my house and my customer/team captain, who is also a USGA Course Rater, was able to pick up the irons prior to leaving on a 5-day course rating trip to Puerto Rico and another trip to the San Diego area, where his "duties" (it was a USGA trip) included playing Torrey Pines.

After I got out of the hospital, and back on my feet this Spring, I met-up with this customer/friend and did a "gapping  review", plus checked all of the specs on his irons.  The build that was done at Sub 70 was pretty much dead-on, and all that I had to do was to tweak the lofts a little bit to get the lofts exactly where they needed to be to achieve the exact yardage gaps that he wanted between each club.  Sub 70 hadn't done anything wrong, we just wanted the long/mid iron gaps to be adjusted a bit.

Kudos to Jason and his staff for working with me while I was in the hospital (and after) on this order.  The result of this experience is that I have fit a couple other customers into full-custom Sub 70 clubs (that I built), and I have purchased three Sub 70 clubs for myself.

If I didn't have a nearly-new set of 2021 model custom irons in my bag from an OEM manufacturer that I represent (I'm a Professional Clubfitter, and a Fitter/Dealer for a few golf equipment companies), I have no doubt that I would already be playing Sub 70 irons.  I'm sure that there will be some more Sub 70 clubs (driver?, fairway(s), irons) in my bag before too long!

I sent Jason Hiland an email with some questions this morning. He just called me back (I was in a meeting so I couldn't take the call). I can't believe their excellence in customer service.  I know I shouldn't be surprised since there are consistent glowing reports on this front.  Whenever I'm in the market for a club, Sub 70 will be on the forefront of my mind. They have certainly earned it.

I have their 3&5 woods and a 5 hybrid. Love the options they offer to customize each club without breaking the bank. They communicate very nicely durning the whole process from order to build and finally shipping. The customer service is top notch! They were out of stock on a shaft I wanted so they called asked a few questions gave a few suggestions and bam! The end product is one of the easiest to hit hybrids I’ve ever owned! Darn club doesn’t know how to hit a bad shot. Lots of nice touches when I received my clubs. Great shipping box, clubs well protected, hand written note from the owner along with logo tees and a ball marker! I started buying my kids clubs for gifts and they love them too.

I know I shouldn't care about looks, and the 699s are probably the best fit for my lack of skill, but I love the looks of the 639 CB in satin and black, and strongly prefer the look of the 699 Pros in black over the 699s in Satin... Decisions, decisions. LOL.

For anyone considering Sub 70 their customer service is great.  One of the shafts broke on my son's 639 CB set of clubs and I asked Sub 70 for help purchasing a replacement shaft.  Getting the correct tip diameter and trimming instructions is confusing to me.  Sub 70 promptly requested photos of the head and shaft and then volunteered to re-shaft the club for free.  It is great to do business with a company that would warrantee a club when the customer did not even ask for that.

I found the perfect clubs for me in another DTC set and they have been great but I STILL think about having a set of blacked out 639CBs all the time. I totally get that!

I have Ben Hogan clubs and they’re good and cheaper but are creeping up in price, so the sub70 looks more intriguing because their clubs get good ratings and are cheaper than Hogan. Would like to hear if Maltbie’s compare.
