JPX 923 HM Gapping

Recommended Posts

Just received my eagerly awaited JPX 923 HM irons (PW-5i) and absolutely love them. Only issue is they have created a big gap at the bottom of my bag due to the strong lofts and power off the face, so much so that on a solid strike the new PW can go roughly the same as my old 8i. I was playing a CBX Zipcore 46' as my PW before with a 52' as my Gap wedge, now the PW is 42.5' so if i maintain my current GW at 52' there is a big gap from 42.5 up to 52'.

My plan is it add the set specific GW (48') and keep a 52' and a 56' specialist wedges.

Question is what do you call the 52' wedge that sits between the GW and 56' Sand wedge??

JPX HM PW - 42.5'

JPX HM GW - 48'

Ping Glide 52' - What do i call this second GW??

Ping Glide 56' - Sand/Lob Wedge

Very trivial question i realise but just wondered what peoples thoughts were and if they have had the same issues with strong lofted irons.

People complain about this all the time.  The clubs is simply called a wedge or my X distance club 😁🤪.  IMO the purchasing of clubs should be done on more of a club by club basis.   Pick driver, pick highest lofted wedge and then buy the individual clubs that gap in between.   Depending on swing speed and bag setup you could have 7-14 clubs in you bag,

Lol, yeah was asking for that. After a bit more looking I did find plenty of posts on the same subject 🙈

Once the new GW arrives I’ll do a few gapping sessions and see which lofts I need to put in the bag to hit my desired yardages.

(Probably end up calling them P1 and P2 😬

When I got my HMP's I went to PW then got the T-22 wedges. I named the PW X1 with Shot Scope and the T-22's PW, GW and SW.

Sounds good, how you getting on with the UST Mamiya Recoil 95 F4 shafts? I've ordered a couple of wedges with those shafts and looking forward to trying Graphite in the wedges.

I usually refer to my specialty wedges by the loft. "50", "54", "58".     I use my PW, 50, 54 and 58 from all kinds of lies and distances, including the bunker... depending on the type of shot I want to hit... so I could call all of them a sand wedge at times 😉  .

I really like them, but, the new Recoil Dart 90 was finally released yesterday and I may be reshafting my bag with those.

Not to thread jack (but the OP opened the door for me 😀), what do you like about the Recoil Dart 90 vs the Recoil 95s? I've just started testing graphite iron shafts and saw the Dart 90s but I don't know what the designed difference are, other than weight, of course. I have LOTS to learn so I'd appreciate your comments.

Sounds like a plan, 5-GW then a 52 and a 56 then the option to add in a 60' in the summer with a little lees bounce.

As club designs change (advance??), names have become far more superfluous across the board, IMHO. Just comparing your sand wedge with mine, for example, the name is meaningless. In spite of the fact that we both have Ping Glide "Sand" Wedges, mine is a 54 deg while yours is a 56 deg so the name isn't meaningful other than it's the club we use for most sand shots. The only problem is if you use a shot tracking system. Shot Scope (and I'm sure the others do as well) locks you into specific names for each club. I'd much rather have the ability to map any name I want to a tag so it is more meaningful to ME, especially when reviewing past performance data. I'd call my sand wedge my 54 deg and my lob wedge my 58 deg because I also use them both for lots of shots other than typical sand and lob shots. So, if it's just for you, call it your 52 deg & 56 deg club/wedge. It's far more meaningful anyway!

BTW, I'm sure the reason tracking systems like Shot Scope have specific names for each club is so they can provide the myriad system-wide metrics that they do - all good stuff! They couldn't very easily provide strokes gained for any club if everyone called it something different, I suppose.

100% agree. The main reason i was looking into this was due to using shot scope and them using specific tags on each club, im more than happy to just call them by the loft but when there is only PW, GW, SW, LW tags it got me thinking if im actually carrying two PW or two GW, i think because of the stronger lofted PW im now actually carrying two gap wedges to fill the 'gap' to what i used to call scoring wedges. Like i mentioned its a very trivial post/conversation but fun to see what others are doing.

I used to carry a 52',56' and a 60' but have taken the 60' out so im not walking around with 5 wedges in the bag. Will give me chance to be a bit more creative with the 56'.

A lot of companies call the gap wedge an approach wedge, or A wedge. If you're not comfortable calling it by the loft designation, "My 48° wedge", you could call one of them an approach wedge.

I like to call my "A" wedge my Attack Wedge, because it sounds so g-d cool.  Unfortunately, I'm rarely in attack mode, as I *like* to leave myself 20 foot putts for par.  Yep. I LIKE IT, DAMN YOU!

In all seriousness, I'm all for calling the wedges by number, but I understand that ShotScope makes that a bit trickier.  I'd use the "AW" moniker if it's available in your setup.

I'm going to take a flyer with them. However, after talking with other people I know that were able to test them, they say they're better than the Recoils, they feel better and smoother.

straight to the loft name, after the PW or in your case the GW,  you might need to start at 50 degree with depending on the distance you hit the GW.
