Music on the Golf Course?

Recommended Posts

... I have been on golf forums longer than you have been alive and I have never heard any of them referred to as a "debate forum". We are here to exchange knowledge, both giving and receiving of all things golf. Some forums have been more argumentative than others but my golf spy is not one of them.

... Goodness knows I love music but there is a good chance I don't love yours. Or you mine. Like politics, the extreme sides on this issue are in the minority but always seem to be the loudest. It is unreasonable to expect to play a public golf course and not hear some music in 2023. It is also unreasonable to play your music so loud everyone else is subjected to it. Neither is "your right" you are both just being selfish.

... Ideally you should play your music at a level only you can hear when near your walking or riding cart. I say ideally because everyone can be happy. But I play lots of golf in season with strangers as I am on the course 4-6 times a week and with a friend in town I might be out there 7 days in a row. I have been paired up with those playing their music, especially music I don't care for, louder than ideal but never once has it been obnoxiously so. I am aware of it on the tee or green but not so loud as to be distracting. As you and Russ have covered, letting that bother me is a choice, and one I choose not to make so I am no longer even aware of the music in the background because my focus is on my golf and my partners.

... And to be fair yes, I have run across Drunk Bro's that think they are in their private own world playing music so LOUD it can be heard from a fairly or two away. And it is always rap or country. 🙄  But when I consider how many golfers are on the course everyday and playing over 200 rounds a year they are a statistically insignificant number. Certainly less than 1% so unless I am sitting in front of my window with a megaphone just looking for someone missing the sidewalk and barely touching my lawn with their shoe so I can scream at them dammit, they aren't really a problem. I am not gonna waste any energy on people so selfish they don't care how their actions affect others and in some cases are doing it on purpose anyway because again 99% of the time they aren't an issue.

Good points Sam.

I’ve never once been disturbed by someone’s music.  I am almost always disturbed by their pace of play.

I’ve never once been disturbed by someone’s music.  I am almost always disturbed by their pace of play.

When I am appointed High King of golfdom I will enact a ban on the following:

Multiple practice swings, address the ball, step back for another practice swing, address ball, hit( slice, top, or chunk)

This policy will be enforced with zero tolerance for transgressors:

If all 4 members of a group are looking for the same lost ball, their round is forfeit and they will be escorted from the premises.

These will be the first steps in a multi prong effort to improve pace of play.

Lastly, this seems common sense to me but to those that like music on the course: keep the volume at a reasonable level

To those that don’t: Live and let live. Life is far too short to have a round or day ruined over dumb stuff.

I enjoy music on the course. The speaker remains on my push cart. My music is played at a reasonable volume which can be barely heard from the tee box and the green. Today’s round was an accompanied by Pink Floyd.
The Wall, Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.
There were few others on the course today. And I seemed to have the back nine all to myself. I only saw one other golfer ahead of me.

My only real pet peeves on the course are those with a general lack of awareness which leads to slow play, not raking bunkers or fixing ball marks.

Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, irritates me more than this on a golf course. The only time I take a practice swing is around the green when I want to get a feel for a bump and run or *attempt* at a flop shot.

And don't get me started on golf ball searching...I've got a buddy, one of my very best friends in the world, who spends WAY too much time searching for an errant shot. Keep in mind the last time we played he was playing Top Flite Bombs lol. At less than a buck a ball, just leave it and drop one! Hell, with how long he looks at times I wouldn't even make him take a penalty stroke!

During my afternoon round yesterday we were stuck behind a foursome that accounted for every aggravation I have with pace of play. There was “practice swing guy” who also would be at least 50 foot from the hole on every green. He would putt and leave it 20 foot short. Putt again to get it within 5 and then he would pull the pin and blow his next putt 3 foot by the hole. All while going through his pre-putt routine for every putt. As a group, they had full foursome search parties on at least 7 holes. And the cherry on top, was the older gentleman and his wife who, because of presumed disability, drove the cart to 2 steps away from his next shot for every shot. This included tee boxes and the fringe of each green. He played 18 holes and may have taken 48 total steps to do so.

... There is just so much in this game that is relative. Of course at the very top of the list is if you keep pace absolutely nothing you do matters. But there is usually something relative that changes things. If you wanna look at your putt from all 4 angles and start that process while others are lining up their putts and you are ready to go when it is your turn that is diametrically opposite of those entitled players that wait til their turn to start stalking their putts, and then do it again when they miss like the green has somehow changed between strokes.

... I am trying to take more practice swings because I am trying to get back to my natural swing after some ailments has caused me to pick up some bad habits. But I am usually taking them while my pard is hitting their shots so I am ready to go when it is my turn. What I don't do is stand there and take several more practice swings after hitting a poor shot. Playing behind someone taking multiple practice swings then topping it 30 yds and standing there taking extra practice swings before doing it all again 30 yds later is why we see confrontation video's on Youtube.

... Ready golf is so easy and intuitive. Just always be ready when it is your turn.

Yup. It’s not what they’re doing that, but rather when they are doing it, that is so aggravating.

Yes, I probably should have stated that I was getting at playing ready golf. I have no problems with anyone who takes practice swings so long as it is within reason. Thanks for clearing that up for me, @chisag!

Great Commentary Sam @chisag!  Well stated! MGS a great Forums, Discussions, great people & educational!

@Ben Joest you're hired as High King of Golfdom! LOL!   Being a Ranger at a country club the past couple of months has been educational & a learning experience!
One of the biggest issues contributing to slow play has to be golfers playing the wrong tees.  Not sure if it's an ego thing, what's misleading golfers tend to choose tees strictly by yardage.  Not only does it effect the pace of play, but looking at the players who struggle, it has to lead to a miserable time on the golf course. 5,900 to 6,200yds can be challenging and more fun than 6,700 -7,000yds.
Ben you bring up good points concerning excessive practice swings & waggles. Add to that everyone driving over to one ball all contribute to slow play as well, instead of playing ready golf.

One interesting thing I've noticed about music on the course, there are groups who will have their speakers at a high volume, however when I drive up, they immediately lower the volume (it's not why I'm driving up to them).  So if they are turning the volume down when I approach, they know it might be a bit too high.
As for me, I enjoy music on the course, but at a level I can hear in my cart.  I play my Italian music on Pandora: the Lou Monte & Louie Prima station.  What's even funnier, if my golf buddies don't hear Lou Monte, Sinatra or Dean Martin playing, they ask why I don't have my Italian music on! LOL. That's funny cause I try to be conscious of my playing partners, when playing music.

Lastly, I just read the following article from online "Golf" titled: Lee Trevino declared war on slow play in 1973.  Would his 10 solutions help now? It's a good article -

I don't care to listen to music while I'm playing. That being said, last week I played with a couple of young guys (they were 15/16, I'm 40) who were both playing music. They were polite about it and asked me if it was ok to play music. The thing was, they had it so low, that I couldn't even hear it unless I was within 5 ft of them. I didn't actually notice it until the 3rd hole and I never actually heard it during any of my shots. For those of you that want to have a little soundtrack at a respectable volume for your golf round, I enthusiastically support you. I won't start carrying around my own speaker anytime soon, though.

This is exactly how it should be for sure. No need to disrupt other groups with music that is loud enough to be heard on a different hole. I also will not be carrying my own speaker around anytime soon.

I usually tend to play music at a reasonable level when I'm out walking/playing solo .  Like most have mentioned when in a group ask first before blaring your jams .

I love playing music on the course...but like others have said, at a reasonable volume.  I play with a guy who likes his music really loud...to the point that you can't hear each other talk while in the same cart.

But even then, no music will ever bother me as much as really slow play...slow play is what ruins a round of golf, not music.

I much prefer silence. On the course and on the range. My ADHD brain doesn't need another distraction.

Song changes during the pre shot? I'm toast. I'm nowhere close to being quiet between the ears. Now I gotta think about memories with this track. Do I need to sync my background with the beat? That'd be class. Or, man I don't like this band. Why is he playing this?

I'm that curmudgeon. Now get off my lawn.

I have generally found the type of music I am listening to greatly influenced how I'd like to play.

I'm going to be the far outside outlier in this category, but in part with the music I'm either smoking a cigar, smoking a joint (fire season dependant so I usually go to the pen), or using small amounts of psyllicibum (mushroom stems mostly) to enjoy the round how my body and mind feels it wants to go. I don't drink alcohol and have found immense focus and enjoyment with the cocktail above

I don’t care for music at the course, but if others play it I don’t really care as long as the volume is reasonable. So if the foursome ahead or behind can hear the songs clearly, I think it’s too loud. I’ve also noticed that music tends to be played by the older players (late 40s and up) and they love to listen to metal or rock from their glory days. Tells you a lot about people

  • 4 weeks later...

There are various choices available to you if you're trying to find a substitute for your NuTone intercom. You have two options: purchase a brand-new Nutone intercom system or a compatible intercom system from a different manufacturer. When choosing, there are a few factors to take into account, including your budget, the size of your home, and the kind of system you currently have.

DMB was like fingernails on the chalkboard to my ears in the 1990s, and it hasn't gotten any better since then.  I'll take 10 Limp Bizkit albums in repeat over anything DMB.
