Quick update on air install method with the Zen Lite grips. I have felt both the 7 iron and driver grips start moving after a few SIM practice sessions. Since I know this is just a matter of not enough friction with the foam material that is on the inside of the grips. I pulled off a layer of masking tape and added athletic tape. Since it is a cloth tape I am thinking the texture will provide more friction to the foam. Initial attempts to twist after when fine but I will update after some use.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and photos with the JMX grips! I'm also glad you're having a positive experience. There's something to the tech in these grips and so far I'm chalking it up to requiring less grip pressure. DEFINITELY let us know how they work on your irons. I'm hitting my irons pretty well with midsized grips, so I'm not planning on switching anytime soon, but I might if there's benefits.

Do you find yourself liking the JMX ZenLite or the JMX UltraLite grips better?

Can you explain the arccos mounting situation a little more? They make grips specific for the arccos devices or special tips? It is a little unfortunate that they protrude out of the end of the grip so much.

These are the grips that work with Arccos sensors. Unfortunately I would need to buy a new set of sensors as these are the same as the putter sensor I have prev used for my putter, so I do have one I can try out if I buy a single grip to test.

Regarding which grip I prefer- I prefer the feel of the Zen Lite grips and the flat butt end is better for the Arccos sensors, but the Ultralite is pretty comfortable too.
However, I like the idea of the STR8 grips not having a taper. I’ll likely try one of those on an iron soon along with the standard jumbo I mentioned having ready to fit.
As we all know, a full set is a significant financial commitment compared to the more common standard style grips. I’ll likely just keep the mix of Zen Lite and Ultralite on woods and hybrid until they are worn and need replacing.

I am at the point now where I have placed the order and semi-obsessively checking my email to see if they have shipped and when they do, what is the delivery date?

I have played once or twice so far this spring/late-winter but have a "season kick-off" round scheduled for the 29th. Before then, I would ideally like to have one grip installed for testing purposes before regripping the whole set.

Which club would you all recommend in terms of testing?

Also, I noticed that many of you have mixed grips and/or sizes throughout the bag, is that common with JMX grips or just a byproduct of testing and tweaking?

My mixed bag is purely because I’m testing and seeing what works for me.
my primary need was driver and fairway woods, to quieten wrist and try to present a consistently square face at impact and hit more consistent shots.

For irons, I will try 6/7 iron and sand wedge to see if I like the wider grip for both approach shots and chipping around green.
After testing those I’ll decide whether to change the whole set or just the woods and hybrid.
Likely different strategy person to person.
Edit: to add, if I go full set of jumbomax grips, I’ll likely need a new- bigger- golf bag to fit all the clubs in 🤣

When testing new grips, I usually end up testing them on the driver first. When I converted from standard grips to midsize, the order I went in were Dr, 5w, 7i and then the rest of the set. No real method for that order other than I tried to put them on clubs that I use most often. If you have data on which clubs you use most, I would start with the highest one (excluding wedges).

Regarding the mix of grips and sizes, that's due to me testing them out. I know I like the JMX on the Dr, but I haven't put them on other clubs before. I may end up switching the whole set out someday, but my midsize grips on the irons are pretty new and I've been hitting them well.

Thanks for the air install update with the Zen Lite grips. I wonder if they have a different inner material than the STR8 UltraLite grips because I've done one sim session (a very long sim session) and a 9 hole round and the grips have not moved at all.

Keep us updated with the new athletic tape!

It's not unreasonable to schedule a work from home day, where you work from your front porch in a lawn chair, waiting the arrival of golf equipment! 😆

I still haven't had a chance to make it out with the STR8 yet. I had league last night but didn't want to give it a test run during that in case things went awry. My Saturday is wide open and the weather looks decent, so hopefully that's the day!

The grips arrived! While I cannot immediately throw them on a club, I immediately took one out of the packaging and started fiddling with it. Initial impressions are the size feels definitely larger but ultimately comfortable in the hands. I am a little concerned at how smooth the grips are -- I have the Tour Series (XS) in the Blackout color and they feel very slick, as in I am worried about sweaty hands or humid conditions. I think I mentioned in an earlier comment that I have historically played Golf Pride MCC grips which have a much more aggressive texture. Those of you that have played these grips for longer, is this a concern or does the increased diameter help with stability and reduce the need for increased texture?

As I was perusing the recent thread, "What is your go to grip - irons / woods / hybrids?,"

I noticed several people that seem to have varying experiences with JumboMax grips. I thought I'd tag them here so they can share their thoughts an experiences with the grips to help others considering them.

It seemed like @Adamman84 & @VistaKing have been using them for multiple years as their main grips. Let us know your positive experience with them, if you'd like.

It seemed like @CB Lobo 4 Life has tested them out and decided on others and @RoverRick just purchased some and had a poor experience. I'd like to read some details about why you didn't enjoy them and switched.

I originally was curious on them after seeing Bryson talk about them a few years ago and then I saw a video from Peter Finch about him trying them out, so I bought 3 or 4 of the Bryson grips (they are the really big jumbos). I threw them on a driver shaft, one on a wedge and 2 on backup set of irons (one on the 4 iron, one on the 7 iron).

At first, it was difficult to adjust to how big they were. I like that they felt very solid, and never made my hands feel like they would slip off or move. I messed with the Bryson grips for about a month, hitting a lot of balls on the range and on the course. I ended up deciding that the Bryson size was not for me, but I liked how they felt and decided to try different sizes.

I went back onto JumboMax's site and ordered 4 of each different size. This was a great way to test them, and I started regripping and testing in a similar fashion (Driver, 4 iron, 7 iron, wedge) until I settled on the one that would end up being my go to grip: STR8 Tech Non-Tapered, medium size, Tour Series style

After adjusting to the size (previous to the switch, I was using Lamkin UTx Cord Midsize Grip), I noticed that the soreness in my wrists started to get better and better until after an entire season passed and I no longer was suffering from overly sore wrists after I would play. I play a lot, 2-3 times a week and go to the range 2-3x, so my wrists would feel like Jello after a week of playing but the JumboMax grips really did help me. My shot shape is a draw, and switching to these grips didnt change that. I will say that for me, hitting knock down/punch/stingers "feels" incredible but that also could just be me liking the grips a lot.

They also don't wear out as much as the Cord Midsize grips that I was using previously, so that was a nice addition. The Cord grips were usually 2 sets a season on my main set because of how much I play, but the Jumbo's last much longer (my current set of Jumbos is going on 2 season since a full regrip and they are still going strong). I have a bit of a strong grip and my left thumb does dig a bit, so there is noticeable wear marks there but it doesn't affect me swinging the club where my other grips it would wear and then I would notice a bit more "movement" on my left thumb during the downswing.

I have a Pros and Cons list below in case nobody wanted to listen to my word salad above:

Pros:

-Feel great

-Look good

-Last a long time compared to my previous mid sized grips

-Less wrist soreness

-Very difficult to "overly" flip my wrists on the down swing

Cons:

- Price: these grips are amazing but they can be pricey unless you buy a full set at a time

- Installation: I have been installing grips on my own clubs for about 10 years now and these grips were the only ones were I screwed up a few by not pushing them all the way down. The end of the model grip I like is open so you can add Arccos to it, but if you don't use that then it leaves a gap so you have to make sure you are pushing the shaft allllll the way down. Its not a grip issue, more of a "me" problem but I will still put it under the Cons section just in case folks were curious

- Adjustment period: after switching from a normal sized grip to the larger jumbo sizes it felt very strange and I had to spend some time getting use to the feeling during the swing (especially during the down swing, they feel very different to me compared to regular grips). Once I adjusted, I fell in love but the first 3-4 range sessions were a bit off, so I would recommend messing with them on the range first so you don't completely hate yourself on the course

Final Thoughts:

Jumbo Max makes a great product and I will never look at another brand of grip after using these for so long. They have a great product that I feel is very much worth the price as they not only perform as a great grip but have helped me to be able to play more golf (not sure if my wife is ok with that, but I won't hold JumboMax accountable for that haha).

I will add some pictures later to this post of the wear marks on my clubs so folks know what I mean when  I say "thumb wear", I am currently not at my house to start taking pics. I hope this helped, let me know if you have any other questions or want to know more and I will do my best to help out!

Let's go!

I am going to try and get some before and after data after putting one on my driver, I'll report back after doing so. I'm a midsize player typically, but I was able to toss an XL JMX on my driver and it was almost love at first... feel? I'm going to size down to a medium JMX STR8 and give it a whirl.

I’m awaiting your data. I’m on the fence with the jumbos, I’ve tried them and have one on a shaft. I’m a midsize grip right now and am thinking oversized grips.

I could play golf every day and learn something new each time.

I just pulled the trigger and ordered a single grip to test. While we were doing our TPT fittings @ZackS let me hold one of his clubs to get a feel of these grips and I've got to say they felt pretty good. Should be here Monday so the only thing left to do is pick a test club...

Hey Folks,

Sorry about not getting back on to post the pictures I was talking about but my wife currently has a bad bout of Covid so I have been helping her out with that. Here are the pictures I was talking about with the grip wear pattern:

Driver:

I know that this pattern is caused by my overly strong grip and my wear pattern is in the same spot on other brand grips as well. I feel like with the Jumbomax, the grip still feels great in my hands. The wedges are going on 2 seasons and the driver is about a season and a half (the shaft was from another Ping driver that I put on my G430 10K, so thats why it shows more wear for a new driver).

Thanks for sharing your experience. The STR8 tour really appeal to me, in no small part due to Arccos integration (albeit I'd have to buy a new set of those smaller/ grip-integrated sensors, which isn't cheap!). I'm enjoying using Jumbomax grips but need to test them on an iron. May order a single STR8 to try out on an iron or wedge too.

Hope your wife recovers quickly!

I was able to get my test grip installed on my Hybrid yesterday! This is the club where I noticed the worst flipping or snapping of my hands resulting in a over-draw or hook. I haven't had a chance to hit it yet.. but I am golfing on Sunday so hoping to be able to hit some balls before hand and then out on the course.. but I am very excited to test them out. The grip feels better actually installed on the club than it did before installation. Fortunately for me, next week my children are on spring break at their grandparent's house so I can probably get a few range sessions in to fully test before deciding on the rest of the bag (I ordered the full set in anticipation).

OK!! I'm ready to start my JumboMax adventure...

20240321_135557.jpg.6cd51c9d3b51ac7622dafc51225890f2.jpg

These are all STR8 Tech (reduced taper) .. top is JMX Ultralight and other two are Comfort Wrap .. all XS.

...

Size: initially I'd thought I might go larger - even up to Medium - but after looking at the specs of all of their grips I'm starting at XS. Could potentially go to a Small later on but that's TBD.

I happen to have an Edel putter (for sale if anyone's interested, just saying 😉) with their larger round grip on it which is 1" diameter - took my regular swing grip and did some practice swings with it and that was my guide for initial sizing.

A6sk the STR8 Tech models XS are just under 1" diameter in the middle (not butt) at 0.97".

* Note to everyone thinking about these grips -- check the specs on their website not just for sizing but for WEIGHT!

-- everything that's not Ultralight starts to get kinda heavy, relative to standard swing grips, so be sure that's what you're looking for

Current grips: a mix, actually, but predominantly CP2 Wrap (~52g) Standard + 2 wraps (so in-between Std and Mid).

Last year I ordered a driver (from CPO) with that grip setup and it came with a Mid... 🤷‍♂️ Ended up playing it that way and liking it.

What I'm looking for: someone else mentioned sore wrists and that's been happening to me, too .. especially on the trail hand. One of my many bad habits is "throwing" the clubhead thru impact; also I still hit a lot of fat shots.

Additionally I'm hoping to see if these can help quiet my hands in the short game - e.g. reduce the bad tendency to flip at the ball on a very short touchy chip.

Test clubs: I have a half set of extra clubs I keep in a light carry bag for practice, so these grips are going on a few of those...

  • Comfort Wrap (83g in XS) - driver and 54 wedge (.. so maybe a slight counterbalance effect on the driver, and on wedges I kinda like a heavy feel)
  • Ultralight (39g) - 7i (.. so the bottom rib will always be in the same place, plus wanna see if I get a slight bump up in SW without adding lead tape)

Separately - I purchased one MCC+4 in Mid to try on my regular 6i.

...

Ok will be back in the near future with hopefully some good news!

FYI below is copied from a marketing email, but I found this bit pretty interesting...

"He (Justin James who just won a WLD event) uses different JumboMax grips based on the conditions to aid in his trajectory control."

Here's the full text...

......

Team JumboMax Member Justin James claimed victory at the World Long Drive MB Invitational, the tour’s first event of the season.

James, No. 4 in the WLD Rankings, hit a 398-yard drive in the finals to win for the third time in his last nine events.

James also launched the longest drive of the event at 414 yards and averaged 394.25 yards per drive at the event in Huntington Beach, Calif.

James, the 2017 World Long Drive Champion, used JumboMax’s Tour Series XL  (black/silver) swing grips to win. He uses different JumboMax grips based on the conditions to aid in his trajectory control.

JumboMax Grips are also used by Martin Borgmeier, the No. 3 ranked player in the WLD Rankings. He uses STR8 Tech UltraLite (XS).

Sam Judah, who finished in the top-8 in the event, uses Tour Series Medium (red/white/blue) swing grips.

The WLD MB Invitational helped raise money for cancer research through Driving Out Cancer.

Thanks for sharing photos! Given how often you play and their age, I'd say that's not too bad. Especially if it isn't affecting how you're swinging! I don't know how long I expect these to last, but I'm hoping for quite some time since they are considerably more $ than most grips.

Ok will be back in the near future with hopefully some good news!

Cool to see you with some JMX! I don't think I'll consider anything larger than XS until I get very used to these. Probably a good starting size for most folks. Excited to hear how everything plays out for you!

Great bit of advice about considering the weight of the grips also! I am glad I ended up with the STR8 UltraLite's because I plan to cut down my Dr at least a 1/2 inch in the near future and I didn't want to have to add weight to the head to offset the modification.

My kiddo has always liked the grips when he hits clubs in a store. So I decided to make him his own version of JumboMax and put my old pure grips on for him. Had to build up the shaft with 10 wraps of tape. He likes them and the pure grips will be easier on his hands as well.  IMG_2756.jpeg.faa965858bbd281bb01367700b1084d4.jpeg

So I think the honeymoon phase with the STR8 is over, at least on my driver. The first few times I went out with the initial JMX XL and then the new STR8 medium were fine, but then all of a sudden I just stopped hitting it well. Note, driver is also the worst part of my game… so there’s that. I am still going to keep it on my spare shaft and swap them out to test it here and there… but this weekend was not good.

I’ve mentioned this before in another thread, but sometimes when I lose my driver swing I will switch to a baseball grip in effort to sorta straighten things out. I tried this a couple of times with the STR8, it did feel better, and the shots weren’t as awry… but, it wasn’t a big enough sample size to really say she’s the one.

If the weather remains decent this week, I plan on sneaking up on my lunch break and hitting a load of shots with the STR8. I’ll report back and let you know if the grip isn’t for me or if I’m just that bad with the big stick. I’m leaning the latter.

Yesterday I played a very cold and very windy round of golf with the new JMX grip on my 4Hybrid. I hadn't hit the club yet so it was a risk, but I was able to go to the range for ~20-30 balls before the round and was able to (finally) hit the hybrid before the round. I found the adjustment period to be pretty minimal, though I would have liked to have more sessions before going out on the course. I was not playing the best so I am not judging too harshly on my in-round performance but I think that this could be the start of a beautiful relationship!

I tried the XL Ultralite on the Qi10 and it was too much for me, but I figured try the largest one first, right?

I caved in and used the website sizing protocol, and now have a medium on order and will try that once it gets here.

I like the tackiness and feedback the grip provides quite a lot.  The quality of the ball strike (compressed/thin/heel/etc.) could be felt clearly, but the feel was still soft.  Excited to try the medium and see if that works better.

Working at getting better ... and very slowly getting there.

Good luck with the new size. I’m surprised the feel is still good with the XL. I found the same to be true with my JMX XS grip. The feel of the shot and strike location is still there, but softened slightly.

I did run into my first grip rotation issue. I installed the grips with one piece of painters tape and air. I was swinging my driver outside this evening to loosen up after a long drive and I noticed the grip was rotated at the top. See the photo below:

IMG_2478.jpeg.19ae12bfc895dc7e07abc7ae42981b81.jpeg

If you look at the rib along the back, you can see that it has an ‘S’ curve to it. The bottom is aligned correctly and then the butt end of the grip is rotated around.

It’s looking like air is not a long term way to install these JMX grips since @ZackS and now I have had the grips rotate.

100% agree on the feel. Still get the feedback but overall vibration is less. On the air install other than the tour that has rubber inside, the foam doesn’t have enough friction on masking tape. I will keep you updated on my current method with the layer of athletic tape. I know it will have more friction, but if it’s enough for the long term is yet to be seen.

The website says I should go for large, but I can't imagine needing more than the medium. Can only imagine how fat the XL is! lol. I've tried from XS to M and have a superjumbo (regular grip superjumbo equivalent size) on my garage workbench to try at some point.

Agree on the feel and feedback. I'm really liking both the Ultralite and Zenlite grips. Next test grip for me will be the STR8 Tour. Endlessly tinkering. Ha ha
