What/How Did You Practice Today?

Recommended Posts

Plan was to play 18 after work but that didn’t happen. I did have time for some chipping and putting though. Really trying to get the chips close enough to set up a legitimate chance for one putts. The chipping green that I use has multiple places to utilize different lies so I took advantage of that and trued to visualize the types of lies that I am usually in when I miss a green. Uphill, downhill, fairway grass, rough, and over a bunker were all part of the variation. I was feeling pretty good about the consistency by the end and am hopeful that I can take that on course.

I also took some time to roll putts, especially the long lags. When I do make a GIR during a round, I usually seem to need a long lag putt to have a chance at a two-putt par. Some if that is speed and and trajectory while other times it’s just reading the green properly. There were moments that even the practice green looked like it would break one way but my ball went the other way. That made me take a closer look to determine what I thought I saw versus what the break actually is. Putts were pretty good by the end of the session.

Now the hard part, taking those improvements to the course.

Practiced putting indoors with a couple of Phil Kenyon drills. followed later in the day by Super Speed training. Putting has been a real weakness for me this year and is something that I will be spending a lot of time on. today I learned that putting left hand low would help keep my shoulders square to the target line and so I'm giving it a try.

Spent some time at the local range with the trackman bay. Focus was irons today and got some quality work in with some Army buds.

Looking to upgrade my older set, so I was taking a peek at the numbers. What do you all think of these numbers, 7 iron?

Spent a decent chunk of today in the basement so far watching golf and working on my many swing issues as of late. I feel like I’m rushing myself on course so I’m trying to refocus on my preshot routine a bit.

Putting has been inconsistent at best. Rolled quite a few this morning just trying to get a good tempo going. I feel that the Puttout helps me out with that and I started throwing the mirror down to make sure contact is clean and straight. It seemed to be getting a bit better.

Irons and chipping have been really getting to me lately as well. I seem to be going just a bit right or short of my target the vast majority of the time. The short shots have to be me being tentative about hitting a thin shot. Trying to work through that. The shots going right are either alignment or swing. Currently working on that with foam balls and a target net with my 54° wedge. So far it looks like a swing issue towards my target and I’m getting lazy on my follow through.

Back to the grind.

Weather here has been quite dreadful, and I have been on holiday touring Norfolk… sadly both my wife and son hate golf like I hate looking in old building and eating limp cheese sandwiches whilst paying silly money for the pleasure!

However yesterday I got to the range, I had arranged the bag with i15 irons 5-wedge,  4 crossover , Driver, 3 wood, 7wood and wedges 50, and 60 degrees.

I played 2 simulated rounds, as it makes me vary my clubs and shots etc.. is it beneficial, who really knows?

Suffice to say driving was a bit poor, it’s purely set up and positioning.
7 wood is too long at 225yards, 4 crossover is 205yards, then I step down 10 yards through each iron.
My simulated rounds were -10 and -11 .. I did 2 because the first looked a bit flukey. But I think the i15 give me consistency which I don’t get from my MP20s or 0211DC

But the i15s have steel shafts, and as I am an old fella, I came home with some wrist and elbow pain. So long range sessions on mats is probably not good.
I am thinking that I should possibly look at G430 or i230 in std or retro lofts with a graphite shaft…

G430 presents a conundrum, will it be like the 0211DC and be inconsistent front to back dispersion ?
The other question is i230 in 5-7 iron forgiving enough, i15 is fine, ( 4 iron I don’t think I was launching high enough, and I have the 4 crossover which I like)

I suspect I will have to go to the ping centre in the U.K. to get my answers !

But for now I will play the i15s, see how I get on and re-evaluate, if I am shooting below 80 regularly and no pain then I will just wear a hole in them.

Epic speed - GPLB in long flex

Ping 425 max 3 wood/ Callaway Rogue 5w

PXG 7 wood/ Ping g425 Crossover 3

Ping G430 irons 5- 46 degree (+2 degree loft)  ( graphite shafts)

Ping  glide 4 , 50,56

Vokey SM6 60 degree M grind

Worked on some short distance pitches last night from rough lies.  Did 10 yards and 20 yards.  Was trying to swing through with my shoulders more than my arms.  Letting more of the big muscles take over.  With the clubface pointing to the sky at finish.

Then did some of my own version of speed training.  Ten swings in a row and I was out of breath.  Weighted club and simultaneously swinging.  Of course I am out of shape.

Weather was finally not scorching so was able to do this in reasonable weather.  Will try again this week.

I just wanted to loosen up yesterday. Hit some Driver, 7iron, and my PT15. It's honestly the club I've hit the best in the past month. I only pulled it out to practice on a smaller club face, and I love it. I did struggle with my Rapsodo MLM picking up my shots. It's happened before and can be pretty frustrating. While my clubhead speed on driver appears to be in the 105 range, I want to work on getting more speed, and I still feel my gut is getting in the way, and I'm extending a little early, so if my timing isn't perfect, I'm hitting it everywhere.

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 7.1 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

My course has a dedicated short game area for chipping and pitching from various lies and distances.  I devoted two hours using several different clubs, and hit each club high, low, short & far so I'd have an idea of each one's capabilities.  I played the next day and was so confident from 100 yards in, that I shot in the low '80's for the first time in 20 years (at least).   My mid irons will be next, as I've never hit them well and rely way too much on hybrids.

I have a net and hitting mat out my back door which has better helped me get in swings more consistently. I had a lesson Saturday and I worked getting the club a little further inside on my takeaway rather than when I was back and upright.  I was also to close to the ball so working to get away from it. Also, I have been working at quieting my lower body.  I had way to much movement throwing off my timing.

Today I used a simulator room I have access to and worked on (1) takeaway, with a big focus on my inner wrists feeling a bit magnetized to each other and making sure I am not cupping my front wrist. Really want to see the club face come in flush to the ball or closed, trying to avoid keeping it open as that is my typical bad miss (2) Focused on really feeling my hips pushing out towards my target, and not in towards the ball

Hit the range at lunch today and worked through every bag in the club, just because I haven't in awhile and only got to play 9 holes last week, and hard arguably the best range session of my life that I can remember. Started out with my 52* wedge and was working through some issues I've been having with striking that particular club, which went OK. I would say I was 50/50 with that club. Moved to my 60* just to have a little fun hitting some really high flops and then went through the bag in the following order: GW, PW, 9 ,8, 7, 6, 3 hybrid, 7 wood, 3 wood, driver. I have been working again on my takeaway and not getting the club inside, and today was trying to focus on keeping my weight more on my front side. Led to some really, really good contact. I was also hitting some high, baby draws with irons that I again have never had that shape in my life. Only missed, in total, 5ish balls left through my irons.

Went driver, and just last week decided I was going to go with the Aerojet Max from the Cobra Challenge as the last H2H I did on the course, it was just more consistent than TSi3. I think TSi heard about my post, because I could not miss with it today. Every ball was straight or just a slight fade, at intended target, and while I don't have exact distances, were getting out as long as I can remember hitting it. Aerojet Max was also good, but mishits weren't quite as long as the slight misses with the TSi. I did bring the loft setting down to 9.5* Draw setting and absolutely smoked some that were right in contention with the TSi. That spot in the bag is back open, and I am thinking of taking TSi out for league tomorrow.

Was a really fun session today as it was one of those days where I was just striking the ball really well. Hoping to carry it over to league tomorrow.

Fantastic range session today, following a great one last Wednesday and two pretty solid rounds on Thursday and Sunday. Went from hitting the ball the worst in a while to some of the best just like that.

Two minor changes, none related to the actual mechanics of the swing. One, make sure the club is properly aligned at setup (was setting up with the clubface too open to my path/target). Two, focusing on a tiny spot on the ball instead of just generally looking at the ball. Seems to have really helped me stay in balance and rotate without sway.

Driver is still shaky as I tend to fold the left arm across my chest instead of turning. That's definitely still a work in progress.

This is a fantastic strategy for drastically lowering 3-putts. I practice this multiple times a week, and while I'm on the course, it works very well. The only thing that bothers me is that the green moves faster in the morning than it does in the evening. My wife and I play when she gets off work, but I play with the men in the morning

After a weekend of just being slightly off, I went to the range to really focus on the tiny details. I really focused on my setup, specifically my weight in my feet. I tend to get on my toes, so I really focused on getting a more seated feeling and staying grounded. This really translated into my best ball striking day I’ve had in weeks. It instantly cleared up my path, I had been getting too left. It’s funny how something so small can make such a massive impact.

Also, I think I need to get my loft and lie angles checked. Especially in my short irons, they are starting a little left and going left. As well as I can feel the heel digging in that I haven’t noticed until recently.

Before playing 9 i had a range session to compare two shafts for the driver, the hazrdus 6.0 and the accra x flex.  I had been using the 6.0 for most of this year and thought i should see how it compares to last years gamer.

I was more consistent with sweet spot impact and ball flight was more predictable with the hazrdous than the accra so it retained its gamer status

It behaved quite well in the 9 holes following the range session, too.

Spent about 2 1/2 hours on the range after work today mostly to recapture my proper swing tempo and get back to being dialed in on iron distances.

Worked through the bag starting with gap wedge and moving up through the 4 iron. Attempted to hit a variety of shots with each club, meaning less than full distance with each, and both draws rather than hooks, and some slight fades.

After getting through the irons, I did hit a few balls with the top of my bag, utility wood, fairway wood and driver, just making sure to keep tempo smooth and controlled.

Towards the end, I simulated playing some holes on the courses I play, by hitting each club from a tee, second or third shot from the grass.

Hopefully the work today shows up in results on Friday when I get out on the course again.

Back to the course this afternoon for some reps after taking 11 days off. started with my usual bunker warm ups then to chipping, both felt really good, went to the range and worked my way through the bag, again felt really good, the finished with some putts.

Working on being more aggressive through the impact area, I forget about that at times.

Have an 8 am tee time tomorrow, then 1240 on friday, looking forward to being more aggressive on my home course.

My takeaway has been too inside.  Watched a video on it and so I've been working on that.  Also doing some speed training with it.  Slowly trying to get my distance back.  Sedentary lifestyle sitting behind a desk doesn't help at all.  I am using a swing weight on an old club for the speed training.  Excited to get on course and see if it has helped any so far.  Feels better.

Swing work range session. 50% of large bucket on technique. Basically slow swings or some rose/NTC drills lowering arms in transition and rotating. Then 25% of balls short swings, 25% just full shots and 5 drivers to end it. Did my full shots with tour tempo. My irons like 24/8. My driver more like 21/7. When I tried that with my irons it was hook city. I am thinking this is due to my driver being super stout and irons not so much. Was great insight.

Ninty minutes of short game work at the NKGC practice green. Putting (spiral drill 2' to 9'; pull-back drill from 20+ feet) followed by short wedge shots (10-30 yards) to different holes tracking proximity.  Did Level-2 Super Speed training when I got home.

I've watched a few things by Pete Cowen and if you told me I could have a lesson with any instructor on the planet for free he'd be the one I choose.
Everything he says I can relate to.

I recently watched this, tried it, and what a world of difference.

I literally worked on the same thing from the same video today. Danny Maude put out another video where he explained it a bit more. So i just worked on getting that feeling in the back swing with the trail arm cupped. I immediately noticed a more penetrating ball flight! However, not every shot was perfect, I chunked some because I was thinking of  "spinning the forearm down" but that will be the next session where I really try to hone that feeling in.

The only sore spot in my range session today was my 4 hybrid. I just can't hit that club very well...probably just take it out of the bag for now.
