Bands of rain from Ian leftovers coming through our area and we lost power a little before 5 this morning.  Barely any wind at all so i am very surprised, but its only a minor inconvenience.  I hope everyone in its more direct path are making out ok

Yea the rain isn’t even that heavy but we definitely needed the rain

The rain is gone for the week and it is going to be a sunny and crisp autumn week. Perfect fall weather combined with recovering from COVID means I can golf again. Logged into to book a tee time at my home course only to discover the course is closed for a few days this week for aeration. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I was able to book for Thursday. I will golf at plan B course on Tuesday.

I know there has been a lot of discussion around hurricane Ian and my thoughts to all who were affected by it. That being said my wifes family in Nova Scotia were hit by hurricane Fiona and are now going on day 10 without power. I know there are a ton of others out there without power, gas is scarce right now, generators are being stolen and its just a complete crap shoot. Thankfully the bar they own has power, but well thats also both a good and bad thing haha.

I also know of a bunch of supporters from Maine who have made the long drive up to help and appreciate all that. As or right now they are still looking at another 4 or so days without power. Just a crazy crazy storm for Canada and one that hasn't been seen in a very very long time.

Every year my wife sets the goal of not turning on the heater until November 1. That was a more attainable when we lived in Seattle but now that we are in Syracuse, it’s a bigger challenge. 😂

Yeah we could pull that off when I was a kid living even in just southern NH but this far north it is hard.

That is true, I had a get together this weekend and we had a fire going all day so yes I get that. If we had a woodstove I would probably light it just to watch the fire.

Shes lucky its baseboard heat and is very efficient....Has nothing to do with it actually being 60 in the house.

I am too. I dont mind lighting the pellet stove though. I WILL NOT TURN THE BOILER UP. A ton of pellets will last us the whole winter and the previous owner had left over pellets #freeheat(minus the electricity). Kids love it and it heats the whole house. I have a feeling oil bill wont be bad this winter.

I hate having oil heat so I keep my house in the low 60’s. Good thing I’m single and don’t have to listen to anyone about it being cold my dogs won’t care much.

Oil heat is the worst. Love baseboard but prefer it to be gas burning. Much easier to maintain and a hell of a lot more consistent price wise.

if I could have a wood burning stove or pellet stove in multiple rooms I would.

Thru our lifetime we’ve had oil (w/wood stove) 20 years, gas 25 years and now electric 11years and without a doubt electric is the cleanest.  So far the electric is affordable in FL.

Electric is great when you only have to use it a few times a year, it’s like AC up here lol.

I wouldn’t want multiple months of $150 plus electric bills to heat my house and then run AC in the summer it would be that much for the whole year easy for me

Same, we have had every heat source in our homes over the years. Natural gas was by far the best, cleanest & least expensive. We are now  all electric which means $350 AC bills & $200 heating bills, and Georgia Power is taking a 14% rate hike this year!😩

Our bill just went up as well this last month, this far north we have propane heat which has been pretty easy to maintain. We get to lock in the rate earlier this year, with only a small up tick in price. Would love a wood stove though.

Have solar on the new house and while the winter probably wont see much difference it will be real nice in the summer with much lower bills. Just over the past month (which was sunny) we have a $20 credit from national grid. Hopefully the sun is in full force for another month.

I would always try for the Nov 1 heat date each year as well.  The past couple years I have no shot at it with my parents living with us.  They would wear sweaters in August....outside in the 90* temps not in the inside A/C!   😆

We use propane for the 'edge' months where full time heat isn't needed and we use a coal stoker stove for full time heat months.  We own our 1000 tank so we can shop for propane during summer months and only fill every other year at most.  I stockpile coal through the summer and have 4 ton ready for this winter.  Coal prices went way up this year because of overseas buyers since Russia wasn't selling much.  Instead of $200/ton its north of $350 / ton at our local dealer.  Up in @tommc23 's neighborhood it is cheaper at the breakers.  I wish I had a way to haul about 8 ton, I'd make a trip up there.

My in laws have electric baseboard and have had $500 electric bills in bad Jan / Feb temps while other heating months are around $250....and their house is always cold.

Did not see as much of a spike in the pellets this year but still a spike. Went from 400 p/ton to 500 p/ton. Its also the premium douglas fir, some you can get for 250 p/ton

Have solar on the new house and while the winter probably wont see much difference it will be real nice in the summer with much lower bills. Just over the past month (which was sunny) we have a $20 credit from national grid. Hopefully the sun is in full force for another month.

I have solar which helps me a lot in the summer with keeping bills down

I’m close to them that’s for sure it’s not expensive here to heat with coal it’s just a pain and most of my family has switched to gas

Had to turn my heat on today. Mid 40’s and pouring down rain and my house was 58 when I got home from a quick overtime shift. It’s cold but I was in the rain all day maybe that’s why I had to turn it on. I wanted to golf today but pouring down rain in the 40’s is pushing it even for a fat kid like me.

Electric is great when you only have to use it a few times a year, it’s like AC up here lol.

Our A/C is on almost everyday for 4-5 months, electric bill runs $100-$110 month.  The rest of the year A/C is run a lot less and heat maybe 2 months. A heck of a lot less expensive than our oil or gas in New England.

Same, we have had every heat source in our homes over the years. Natural gas was by far the best, cleanest & least expensive. We are now  all electric which means $350 AC bills & $200 heating bills, and Georgia Power is taking a 14% rate hike this year!😩

If we were still in New England I’d have gas. Electric way too expensive in the north.

My S-I-L has fired up his wood stove in CT.
