LPGA Legend Joanne Carner’s wedge deemed Non-Conforming....Still shoots her age.

I know some of you have heard about this as it is a week old now, but LPGA legend Joanne Carner was not allowed to use her 30+ year old Wilson R-90 Sand Wedge at the US Senior Women's Open as the USGA deemed it non-conforming. Now I am a man of law and order and I am glad the USGA is using all its resources to make sure this 79 year old woman doesn't get an unfair advantage!

https://golfweek.com/2018/07/11/joanne-carner-trusty-wedge-deemed-nonconforming-at-us-senior-womens-open/

Now, hopefully my sarcasm came through in that last sentence because this sums up right here one of the big problems with the game. The USGA is in the pockets of club manufacturers, deeming old equipment “non-conforming” so they can sell more clubs.

Do they really think a 79 year old woman with a cigarette hanging off her lip had an advantage using a 30-year old sand wedge? Maybe this was just a marketing ploy as most people wouldn't have even known the inaugural US Women's Senior Open was being played.

Well, like Big Stu has said, I'm giving my middle finger to the USGA. And Stu, I'd like to be an honorary member of your Outlaw Golf Association!

Play what you like!

And by the way, that tough ol girl Joanne Carner shot her age, a 79 in the first round!

You can't use that sand wedge, Joanne, but you CAN (faux) anchor your long putter like (cheatin') Bernhard LOOOOONNNNNGGGEEERRRR.

Joanne must not be a member of MGS forum. I thought we were all supposed to change our wedges ever 2-3 years or so.

I'll have to ask my friend and First Tee board member about this. He was the head rules official at the tournament. I'd be interested to get his off the record take on this.

The R90 wedge, like Gundy* herself, is a golf classic.

The USGA stuffed shirts are out of their minds.

Cartoon-looking 460cc, 46"  drivers are OK.

The great invention of Gene Sarazen isn't.

How does anybody listen to these people?

*JoAnne Gunderson won five US Amateurs before joining the LPGA as JoAnne Carner.

Absolutely. What other possible reason could they have for designating a club non-conforming after it was used at all levels of competitive play for years, other than to help equipment companies make more money?

Pathetic.

If we are to believe all of the golf companies marketing hype the new clubs should have the unfair advantage. Does it not seem like they are working against themselves? They say an old club gives an unfair advantage therefore the old club is better, right? Shouldn't this mean we don't ever have to buy new clubs again? I mean none of us a touring pros so it doesn't matter if our clubs conform or not.

Confusing isn't it? Shouldn't the new stuff be better? Should the old stuff be inferior?

Should/shouldn't?

Maybe the the USGA is a bit confused. You know, double negatives and all. Seems to happen a lot to old white guys in suits these days.
