MGS Article Discussion - What would tour pros shoot at our courses

Love the theory on the article below.  I have my own thoughts and some assumptions...

1. Lets assume they play like we, or at least many of us, do.  Get out of car, stroll up, hit a few at the range and then go at a new course with only the score card and maybe a GPS.  I'm adding 1 stroke.

2. Course conditions - many of our public course do not have pristine greens or sand (not that they'd be in it but they're not perfect) (0.5 strokes - 1.5 strokes)

3. No caddie/markers - This is related to #1 in a way but if they have an errant tee shot could be a lost ball in there.  (0.5 strokes)

So what I'm saying that if they played a single round then I think they'd be more in the mid 60's.   Of course if you let them play more than like 2 rounds, they'll be approaching the high 50's on the regular (IMO)

That is a really cool piece.

Note to self, If I would ever be so lucky to play a PGA tour pro at my home course, make sure that I am taking 3 strokes per hole at least

I think you're right.  All of the stats quoted are based on professionals playing courses where they have studied the layout, played practice rounds, and played in as nearly perfect course conditions as possible.  If you get a great player on a strange course, maybe with a yardage book but no green-reading help, on their own, and under our normal (less than perfect) conditions, he's unlikely to be looking at 59 or 60.  My home club is 72.0/135 from the normal men's tees.  I wouldn't be surprised if a PGA Tour pro shot 69 or 70 at the high end, and would be highly impressed if he was below 65 on his first trip around.

My home course used to host Honda-Open, Deutsche Bank – SAP Open, Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship and Schüco Open.

From the tips 7300 yards (slope 137, CR 75,5) and course record 61 held by Lee Westwood in 1998. He even beat Tiger in 2000.

But what would some random PGA Tour pro shoot playing his first round there, without a practice round, without a caddie?

I'm guessing 65-70? I've seen a couple of scratch players shooting 70-75 their first time, so assuming tour players with +hcp should be a few strokes less? Just a wild guess...

Makes sense. My brother used to play off +4 and he has played my local course 5 times. It is only 5400M but is narrow, does not have a level lie and the greens are small and quite nasty. It has a slope of 124, par 70/SCR 67.

The first time he played it he finished with a 71 so 5 over. The next time he had worked out where to hit ball and he hit a 65 so 1 under, over the next 3 round the best he hit was a 60 but it could have been in to high 50's as he lipped out several times.
