What is the club it replaces? Are they longer than a 3 hybrid? Help me to understand.

My 7 wood replaced my 21 degree hybrid, which a number of years earlier replaced by 3 or 4 iron.

After getting a lot of feedback here and demoing some 7 woods, I got a PXG 7 wood last summer and love it.  Hit it so much better than I did the 21 degree hybrid.  Makes me wonder if I should next replace my 6 iron with a hybrid or something like the Cleveland Halo or TaylorMade Stealth HD.  Always something to consider in my bag.

I should say that last fall I replaced my 6 iron with a 28 degree hybrid and my 7 iron with a 31 degree hybrid.  So far, so good.  Much more consistent with the hybrids and hit them very high (they land softly).  Also, really easy to hit out of the rough, although I must say our rough was shorter than in summer when I got the clubs last fall and are currently not yet at summer levels (although starting to get there).

I can't hit a hybrid to save my life.  I now have a G430 Max 7 wood, and it almost feels as if I can hit it with my eyes closed.  Some days I think that all I should carry is the 7 wood and a putter.😀

Love my Cobra Darkspeed 7 wood! Just added it 3 months ago and then added a 9 wood Ping 430 Max. 6 iron is now my highest iron. 9 wood carries 215 yards and 7 wood about 230. I’ve hit more par 5s in two in the past few months than I think I ever have. And long par 3s are no sweat anymore! 😁

I couldn’t really participate in the “voting” because my first answer was no and there was no N/A option for the other ones.

I have never tried a 7 wood but after looking at some of the distances in the responses I’d be curious what it would actually replace in my bag. I have driver, 3h, then 4 iron on down. 3h is around 250 and 4i is around 210 so I have a big gap to figure out.

Moved into a Smoke Max D 7 wood and Smoke 9 wood after starting to struggle with my 4 and 5 hybrids.

Two rounds in and I'm losing my mind.  They are so good and solid, I'm kicking myself for not doing this sooner.

Thinking a Smoke 11 wood now too!  😍

My 7 wood is starting to be one of my favorite clubs. I played a course today that had much longer par 4’s and 5’s than I am use to and I topped a couple of drives. I ended up hitting my 7 wood 5 times today and hit 4 of them really well and got under one in the rough and skied it a tad. I am a 20 handicap so in Shotscope I set the baseline handicap to 15 to compare strokes gained to. On those 5 shots with my 7 wood I gained 2.78 shots on a 15 handicap and only lost .01 shots compared to a tour player.  From someone who had taken all my fairway woods out of the bag. IMG_5052.png.f584eb1d328b1caeabc535569536bbc8.pngIMG_5053.png.82962a4553a35437f24218c00b76be29.pngIMG_5054.png.ab18fdefe75c86b61acbe52a5258c744.pngIMG_5055.png.dad30f2ef32a3e88e9dc3e097e4434ca.pngIMG_5056.png.d3083875237658da121e458d8d3e0212.png

Saw this thread pop up and thought I'd chime in.  I don't have a 7wood in the bag, but have considered it.  Right now, I'm more of a hybrid type - having 3 - 4 - 5 all G400 models.  I do well with them, but have wondered if the 7w would be a better fit than the 4h (similar lofts).   Looking to read more as the group chimes in.

I just got the Qi10 7 wood because I couldn’t hit my 4 iron to save my life. It is unreal, it’s so easy to hit and even mishits still go 180-200, it’s normally about my 215-220 club, and I hit it at least decent probably 8/10 times, my 4 iron is the opposite.

Looking to get into the 7 wood world as I cannot hit a hybrid at all. Then I wonder if it’s even worth it and how often I’m going to be in a 7 wood position even. The iron play is strong so who knows. Once I get something in my head though it’s a wrap, sure the hybrid will on the market this week to fund the food.

I find the 7 wood to be a really nice club off a long par 3 (180 yards + out)! The height and ability to spin 4k+ beats the 4 iron for me!

I'm probably going the other direction from a hybrid.  I have a Titleist TS2 that is mega-inconsistent.  I'm going to try out driving irons this year as they've long been in my mind.  I hit my 4 iron really well most days, so I'm pretty confident I can handle the 3 iron.  I might just find a 3 iron in the P7MCs, since that's a natural progression from the rest of my iron set.   We'll have to see how the Toura build and review process goes and whether those can beat my increasing fandom of the P7MCs to get a permanent slot in the bag as to whether I want to go w/ a P7MC 3 iron though.

7 wood has been my secret weapon especially in par 5s.. last round I hit a drive on a 530 par 5 and missed right and only went around 260.. I took the 7 wood out and got me back on the green on two! love the height you get and spin to hold those greens! 7 wood all day

from day one playing golf I struggled hitting long irons, really anything more than a 7.  Tried hybrids and did nothing but hit them thin.  Just didn't like the way the hybrids I had looked when setting up.  Got a 5w and found it easy to hit, so I made the decision to get a 7w and a 9w.  Best decision I ever made.  The Callaway Big Bertha woods improved my enjoyment of the game as I hit the longer approach shots with more confidence.  Thinking of upgrading to new woods next year.

I recently put a 7 wood in my bag for the versatility and forgiveness.  Easy to swing it on the fairway!  Should of done it years ago!  My Uncle Louie gave me a 9 wood and I loved it!  So I thought 7 wood for sure!

I just replaced my 4-iron with a MacGregor MacTec 7-wood and love it. I was having trouble with the 4-iron unless the lie was perfect, which wasn't often. 7-wood interacts with the rough much better, which is where my tee shots usually end up. It does exactly what I wanted it to do, while producing a mid-high trajectory. For $99 + tax, I can't beat the price or quality.

Funny thing is, MacGregor mistakenly sent me an R-Flex when I had ordered a stiff shaft. It was a happy accident!

I have been playing a 7 wood for about 10 years now, previously a Cobra, which I bought used just to try it, but once I started using it I started to keep one in the bag all the time.  I am now playing a 7 wood in the PING 425 line, I believe the loft is around 20.5 adjustable.   I love everything about it - anything from 150-170 yards I can hit with and I would have a high level of confidence in the strike.  I would rather use that on say a 150 yard Par 3, and just take something off of the swing speed, and watch rise and then fall and stop - it has to 2 great strengths.  It is so easy/consistent to hit, and 2 is the landing is so much softer.  I used to carry some hybrids but with the 7 wood I found it so versatile I don't really use them.  I still keep a 4 in bag but I use for - get this - if I have to chip near the green and the grass is a bit higher, to more for bump and run.   But I am much more attuned to my woods that hybrids, as I also use my 3 wood a lot and a 5 as well without thinking of it twice. Hybrids for me are more challenging I don't know why.

Favorite club in the bag today is my Stealth 2 Plus 6 wood.  Adjust the loft one way, it's a 5 wood.  Adjust it the other way, it's a 7 wood.  Adjust the 50g weight on the bottom to further dial in the trajectory.  It's a great golf club.

My 7 wood has been my saving grace for a long time now. After a double spine surgery - I lost a ton of distance when I came back and struggled to get my driver swing back on track. During that time - for some reason I could hit my 5 and 7 woods much more consistently. As I struggled with distance off the tee - I was able to at least still keep up with my current level of play and didnt let it phase my overall game as I had so much confidence in that could get caught back up with my 7 wood. Also became a very versatile club where I could choke down, take little half swings etc. for shots I just didn't feel comfortable with with an iron etc. I will forever have a 7 wood in my bag because of the past few years with the one I have now!

A year ago, I upgraded from my 7-wood to a 5-wood after realizing the inconsistency in distance gapping at the long end of my bag. The 7-wood occasionally produced high-spin shots, exceeding 6,000 RPM, resulting in a loss of approximately 20 yards in carry distance compared to the standard. This inconsistency caused significant disruption to my game.

5 wood is bit more consistent spin-wise and sits better between 4-iron and 3-wood. 4-Iron can be hooded for extra yardage if needed, while 80% 5 wood is also decent shot.

Great article and surprising stats from shot scope. I thought the usage rates would be much higher (maybe it is an off-the-shelf availability thing?). I'm not seeing 7 woods to buy off-the-shelf in any golf stores I go to. I'm hitting my 4hy well, but it makes me want to try out the 7 wood!

I like my 7wd, but it doesn't spend much time in my bag. I play in the wind too much and it tends to fly high, I prefer a similarly lofted hybrid that launches lower.

I recently got a 7 wood because I've been reading so much about them and demoed one at my local course.  It is now my favorite fairway wood (besides my mini driver.) I got a AI Smoke triple diamond and it is so easy to hit, an absolute weapon on the course. 200 yds and I know I am finding the green or as close as possible especially compared to my irons. I did start developing a wicked hook until I added a JMX X Small grip and now it's either straight or a fade. Definitely my favorite club and I cannot recommend them enough.

Just picked up a TSR2 7 wood. Can't wait to play it. I have always struggled with hybrids with my swing being 2° flat. Even with the adjustable ones I could not get as consistent of a strike as I can with a Fwy wood or long iron.

Once I even parred a par 3 going 7wd 7wd 7wd.

One bad chip one perfect chip. 🤣
