Hybrids vs. Fairway woods

Recommended Posts

I guess it would depend on what you are using each of them for.  I think the hybrid is a little easier to hit out of the rough than the wood but have found I prefer the woods on the tee and fairway.

I didn’t like hitting high lofted fairway woods and love my hybrids from the tee, fairway, and rough.

@Josh Parker I don’t mean to hijack the thread. But what are your thoughts on carrying both a 3W and 3H?

Something I’m considering and dropping my 4I since I already have a 4H

I either carry my 3w or 4w and a 3 hybrid turned down to 18*

The carry distances between the 2 work well for my bag and I use each every round.

Ill say I carry a 3w, 2h & 4h. Distance gaps work well ion my bag but I only use the 3w off the tee.

The 2h is my off the deck club for those longer shots to get to the green and cuts thru most of anything. 4h is the same but obviously less distance.

I may be a bit of an outlier here, but I carry a 3W, 3H and 7W. I have always preferred the head shape of a fairway wood to a hybrid, which is why I opted to go 7W instead of 4h. The 3H and 7W gap well for me, and the 7W produces a really nice, controllable high flight for shots into greens. I do prefer the hybrid out of the rough, and will use any given three off the tee or fairway depending on the hole layout.

Just switched to a 7W instead of a hybrid this year. I figured, if i just hit the fairway off the tee, it won't be a problem hitting out of the rough!🤷‍♂️

I currently have in my arsenal a 3w (15*), 5w (18*), 3h (18*), and 4h (21*).

The 3w is always in my bag and it's both a tee and fairway club. Not so much out of the rough, unless it's the short cut of rough.

The 5w is somewhat newer and I'm still getting to know it's distances compared to the 3h of the same loft. I do find it's a higher ball flight, and like the 3w it's both a tee and fairway club.

The 3h and 5w will swap in and out at this point due to the same loft, even though I'd bet their distances are slightly different. I just don't know them quite yet.

Both hybrids I use off the tee, fairway, and rough as they do far better out of the rough than the fw's do. Longer par 3's get the hybrid treatment usually, if it's over about 185.

I am going to be testing a 7w this year. I found a can't pass up deal on a Maltby KE4 TC Pro IST Fairway Wood Pak. Stupid low cost and free assembly. So I figured I could test both the 7w and the Maltby FW shaft at the same time.

I love both fw and hybrid clubs. For some reason my swing really works well with them. I'm getting fit next month and will look at the gapping in more detail as well as consider removing my 5 iron for another head cover.

I just switched to hybrids after 20 yrs.  I had carried a 3w, 5w & 4 rescue/hybrid.  Just changed out the 19-degree 5w for a 19-degree 3 hybrid and like it.  I'm getting used to the hybrid and finding it's easier to hit and longer off the tee.

Also will start tinkering changing 3 hybrid loft to 18 degrees & changing the 4 hybrid from 22 degrees to 21 degrees.  The 3 hybrid is a Titleist TS2 with Tensei 70 gram stiff shaft.

I am actually doing the opposite this year and am testing out the hybrids to see if I prefer the difference where I golf and the style in-which it will perform in my hands.

I have a 3 wood and then a driving iron (Titleist U510)…I have never gotten along with hybrids (can’t hit them consistently).  Mainly was looking for a nice gapping between my 3 wood and 4 iron for the driving iron.

Went years carrying a 3 wood and not using it, but made a commitment to making it work and now it is a weapon.

Have many holes on the course I play frequently that requires less then driver off the tee.
