Oban Devotion/Kiyoshi Black alternatives

Recommended Posts

We just got our first dose of snow this year, so all my golfing plans were ruined.

Refusing to stay home, I went to a indoor golf place to kill time and ran into this cool guy who let me try his clubs.

He seemed to be an Oban fan, because all his graphite shafts were from the same manufacturer.

Anyways, I tried the Oban Devotion 6 in stiff and the Oban Kiyoshi Black in stiff and instantly fell in love with them.

The downside is, Oban only sells their stuff through authorized dealers and the only 2 Oban guys in Germany are about 700 miles from here.

Are there any shaft recommendations that play similar to these? Yes, going for a fitting is faster and more accurate, but having something in mind could narrow the scope a little bit and save me and the fitter some frustration :P

Oban shafts aren't that hard to come by either through Ebay or online shops.

That being said, both of those shafts are for players with an extremely fast tempo with a hard transition. I won't touch on "feel" but similair profiles exist is things like Motore Speeder .2 Series, Fubuki Alpha, Matrix M3 line, Attas T2/T3, Rombax Z series, Motore F3 and the popular Tour AD series. Varying flights will be achieved with those. For example the Attas and Motore F3 would both add more launch then either the Kiyoshi Black or Devotion line. The 6 in the DI would also be higher with the 7/8 fairly similair.

Did you get a chance to check the flex rating in each shaft you tried (would have been a number like 03, 05, etc)? The Kiyoshi Black and Devotion tend to spec out a fair bit different even in the same flex code.

I believe they were both 04. I'm sure the Devotion was 04, but not 100% about the Kiyoshi Black.

Thanks Super Tuna! I'll take a look at the other shafts on my next fitting :P

Forgot to mention, these 2 Oban shafts did a good job keeping my spin numbers under 3000.

I thought the Motore F1 was lower launching than the F3? I seem to have too much of a high launch.

Mother of shafts... some of these things actually sell for $400???

The F1 is lower but it doesn't react as well to a quick tempo. That's pretty much the F3's bread and butter.

While I'm on it, the Kusala Indigo is a good option there as well. If your concerned about flight height, I'd probably start with the Alpha as it's pretty much the midline and go from there. If you can't find one to click into your driver, see if you can rustle up the Adams F12 LS. The Alpha in there is the real deal.

That's a good idea. I'll start with the Fubuki Alpha. I've seen some great deals on the bay.

Thanks man!
