What/How Did You Practice Today?

Yesterday I did my usual range work with a wedge, a short iron and driver.  However, I put aside 4 Titleist Pro V1s that were in the buckets (a lot of tourists play here so their wayward shots end up OB in the range and the balls get picked up 😆 ) for the very end.  Those drives went about 20 yds farther than the range rocks!

Were you expecting something different?  What was the condition of the range balls?

I wasn't, just glad for the validation I suppose.

The range balls are from slightly bad to 🤮

Maybe I should try playing left handed!

I topped just about everything.... but with time you start to fine tune and get that more zeroed in.

I've noticed Flatballs in my local Dick's and wasn't sure how to use them. The video linked above gives me a clear picture. My issue is more chunking than topping, but presumably work with the Flatballs would help with that as well.

I’d suggest a towel behind the ball and an object in front of the towel to hit to work on low point control..  Here’s a video that will give you an idea

Heyo!

Along with the sim range, I’ve been practicing my putting on my PuttOUT mat. I haven’t gotten around to acquiring gates and mirrors. I’ve just been working on pacing and aiming. I’ve been feeling pretty good about it, but I’ve added a new tool to my mat.

_DSC0006.jpeg.d5fc92ada4a9a7dac6c115d50da45a9d.jpeg

After some putting, I realized my putts have been a little too consistently good. Then I remembered a review here 2-3 years ago which mentioned that a groove will form in the mat, ensuring that the ball remains on target to the pressure putt trainer every time.

Now I use the Dyson every so often to erase the groove. That said, I’ve been feeling pretty comfortable with 6-foot putts, and I can’t wait to find out how it goes on the course.

Third range session of the year so far while waiting for courses in my area to open.

Taking winter off (no simulator golf at all) really paid off it seems like. It looks like the bad habits that I had picked up grinding and trying to correct flaws for the past two seasons have evaporated. I've never swung the golf club like the last week and I dig it!

I'm currently focusing exclusively on the backswing, mainly the turn and tempo and magic happens!

@TJ Hall, not really sure. I hit them into a net, so no travel. I will hit a few at lunch today without the net and find out!

@TJ Hall... well, I did test a couple out without the net, and they do fly! It's almost like you're launching a mini frisbee. If it is coming off the club straight... that thing really takes off! I had to go across the street to my neighbor's yard to retrieve them... so, I'd say they went about 50-60 yards! It is really windy here today too, so that may have affected the flight as well.

My wife left for a little while and I grabbed a club and an almost golf ball and hit a few chips.   I am so terrible.   Hit a few cross handed and right hand only and did a lot better.   May need to switch to right hand only chips.   For some reason until I get the club to about waist high I can’t control the low point and hit ton really thin.

I am sure people are thinking but it is just a short like stroke; it’s easy!  Maybe it is, but I simply can’t figure it out

@ILMgolfnut, yes. They help immensely in finding the low point in your swing. They were very frustrating for me at first: I topped everything. But, I am sticking with them and they've most definitely helped my iron game. I get a lot more clean, nicely compressed shots than I used to. Personally, I like them a lot! For the first time I have actually created the proper divots AHEAD of the ball and not so many behind the ball!

Sounds like you might be pulling your arms up or bending elbows with some changes in your levels.

Try chipping with only weight on your lead leg and your trail foot just on the tips of the toes for balance.

I am pretty much all lead leg when chipping.  I feel like I am flipping my wrists but I do have issues pulling up my arms.     I think that is why left hand low chipping works;  I tend to keep the left arm straight.

@TJ Hall... well, I did test a couple out without the net, and they do fly! It's almost like you're launching a mini frisbee. If it is coming off the club straight... that thing really takes off! I had to go across the street to my neighbor's yard to retrieve them... so, I'd say they went about 50-60 yards! It is really windy here today too, so that may have affected the flight as well.

Good information…thank you @Steve F!  Hopefully you didn’t hit anything with those, surprised they actually fly that far.

I am pretty much all lead leg when chipping.  I feel like I am flipping my wrists but I do have issues pulling up my arms.     I think that is why left hand low chipping works;  I tend to keep the left arm straight.

Flipping from that position is interesting. Possibly arms getting disconnected from the chest. Try putting a roll of TP between the forearms or if you have a small ball like the tour striker and feel arms and chest moving as one

Managed to squeeze in a sim session and focused on FlightScope Skills app for some target/ distance practice! Played a couple of their games, starting with the FlightScope Combine and ending with an 'Amateur Duel' challenge.

First time doing these two, so they give me a good baseline to (hopefully) improve upon in future.

For the Combine, there are 25 targets and you have 3 shots at each. Starting at 20yds all the way up to 260+. Tough little workout! You score points when you get within the scoring bands of the targets. I managed 147/375 with an 'average to target' distance of 39'5". Plenty of room for improvement!

The following are the five targets from the 'Amateur Duel' I finished with. Four shots at each target. Pretty happy with those results, albeit they are green-size targets. Plenty to work on, but the approach and wedge drills I've been doing over winter were already showing improved approach shots when I played recently.

I only discovered this skills app recently, but really like it. It provides a lot of useful data on shot shapes, miss % (long/short etc) and which clubs I'm most accurate with. As I build the data set up over time, it'll be a useful tool to supplement on-course play and grass range practice. Example of the data it provides below for my irons...

I like my coach, he’s a nice  guy, but I’m not getting a ton out of the Golftec playbook at the moment. We focus a lot on how the swing looks versus actually hitting the ball well.

Kinda mirrors my experience at a GT center in my area. Was there off and on over a few years and ultimately left a lot of credits on the table after my first lesson with a teaching pro at the club I joined a few years ago.

My instructor at GT did accommodate me when I asked to work on some.. simulated .. on course situations, eg short game and short approaches. That was helpful for me!

Focusing on putting this week, start of the evening was still a struggle with both line and speed.  Was trying a few things throughout and worked towards a smooth stroke and it seemed to help, started hitting better putts.

Going to work on it some more tomorrow night.

Day 67 (20 Mar 24) - Today worked on feeling weight on lead foot in downswing. Rehearsed slap stick (left hand on grip, right on shaft) grip at top of swing and finishing with both hands at grip. This helps get the weight onto the lead foot.

Noticed I've been having awful ball striking with all clubs. Believe it is because I got sloppy and started to change things on the fly to fix issues and now I'm all over the place. Back to basics for me with an 8i in hand for a bit.

Step 1: Start at P1, move to impact, Pause.

Step 2: Back to P1 and move to P2, Pause.

Step3 3: Back to P1, move to P2, Pause, move to P3, Pause. Back to address.

Step 4: Start at P1 and pause at each position and follow thru with 50% power concentrating on contact and path.

Step 5: Review video and BLP data to adjust

Can you explain what you are considering p1?

Today is all about strength and flexibility!

Working on flexibility in the core, hips, and low back (looking to avoid that early season low back pain).

  • Hips - "Happy Baby", Knees to chest, 90/90, Forward lunge (each leg)
  • Low Back - Cat/cow, Cobra, Child's pose
  • Thoracic Spine - Wall rotation, "thread the needle"

Finishing up with some leg and core work later:

  • Single leg box squats
  • Single leg RDL's
  • Reverse sled pull
  • Hip Abduction
  • Cable Twists
  • Planks

Hoping the additional flexibility and strength will keeps me limber until this Ohio weather cooperates, and I can get out to the course/driving range more than once a week!

I could very well be wrong here so please correct me if I am to better explain it but here is what I consider the positions

I guess instead of P1 I could have said address? I myself call it P1 as it is the first position I am getting into when in play.

P2 is give or take below the hips to check take away and club face

P3 is hip height where I prefer to have my wrist fully set

Impact is self explanatory. I just do impact as I have a tendency to push the club handle away/right instead of pulling it thru and left
