I have a bit of an obsessive-compulsive tendency when it comes to my clubs. I hate having mismatched grips through any given section of the set

I really liked the grip that came stock on my TaylorMade Sim Max 3W (Golf Pride Z-Grip) but it’s really humid in the summer in Eastern Canada so I went for the Golf Pride Z-Grip Cord. I have this grip on driver, 3W and 2i (i.e., off the tee or 220+ yds clubs).

I also wanted to have corded grips on my irons but I went for the Golf Pride MCC +4 instead of the full cord Golf Pride Z-Grip (i.e., approach clubs or 120-220 yds clubs).

The stock grip on my 52°-56°-60° TaylorMade MG2 wedges is also really good IMHO (Lamkin Genesis Crossline Cord) so I stayed with this setup.

I wouldn’t be able to change a single grip on a club from the three sections above without changing the other grips for the associated clubs. I have trouble dealing with chaos😂.

  • 1 month later...

I was always the one with mismatched grips but most of my stuff were Tour Wraps. Here in the South it has been the most humid summer I can remember. I do sweat a lot. I go through like 4 to 6 gloves a round plus I wear tennis type wrist sweat bands.  For some reason the Tour Wraps became a PITA. In my early golf days I played GP Crown cords which they do not make any more. I decided I was tired of it. Ended up finding a local smoker of a deal on some Lamkin Crossline full cords. I ended up buying like 15 of them. Since I use air to install my grips I can slide the spares on and off if I experiment with other clubs like wedges and drivers. Love it no slipping period.

Now the putter is another story. Because of back injury involving nerve damage I switched back to my old Ping Broomstick I have had for 15 years. It had the original Ping grips just like the Ping irons at the time came with. Needless to say with those being that old plus in storage the last 13 years they were dry rotted. Before committing to the broomstick I had wrapped them in medical gauze tape. I decided I wanted the 2 piece round Super Stroke grips like Adam Scott and Lucas Glover use. You can not find them anywhere. PGASS does not have them. I even tried Maltby and they are on Backorder. I called Super Stroke and was informed they were like on a 6 week back order.  I ended up going to my bud's local golf shop where I got the cord grips and got a 2 piece Winn for now. It seems ok I will try it today. Maltby has my e-mail address and will inform me when they get in and I am on the priority list since I have in the past and still now do a lot of business with them. My bud at the shop told me to get on the list and he would buy what I did not use so I have 10 on order and he will take 8. Those that know me know I am not big on Winn Grips but I needed to do something

Not counting the putter i have regular tour wraps on the irons and two wedges.  I used up some softy tour wraps i had on the hybrids and woods.  I still have a oversize MCC on the 50* wedge i bought used.

As i was typing oversize i started thinking that maybe that is why i tend to miss slightly short & right with that wedge (and only that wedge).  I think i will change it and see if it has any effect at all in my ability to square up the face.

I enjoyed reading the similar thread about different shaft models. Was wondering about people's habits with grips?

Mismatched? Play what's on the thing? I probably have one of the stranger equipment setups in this regard I'm guessing. I've always gone by feel. If I hate the feel I change it, when I buy a used club with a grip that feels good in my hand I play it that way for seasons and seasons.

The result is I have 6 different grips (7 if you count my putter) to go with my 8 different shafts.

Not just models are different, but I have variety in sizes and textures now since my 52° came with a midsize wrap I really like for wedges and put the same on my 48° and 56°.

1. Superstroke Traxion tour 2.0 on putter

2. Iomic X evolution 2.3 on driver

3. Lamkin Utx standard on 3w

4. No1 pro 50 black standard on 5UT

5. Lamkin crossline standard on 6i-PW

6.        "          "     360 standard on 4h

7. Golf Pride CP2 wrap mid on AW, 52°+56°

Updated 5/30/23

Excluding the putter, I have one grip model on all other clubs:  Lamkin Crossline Gray 360 grip. On my lofted wedges, they are built-up under the lower hand to give me a "plus-4" profile; on all other clubs, they are installed over one layer of build-up tape under the double-sided grip tape.

After years of playing cord grips on my irons and woods I let them go about 10 years ago.  I find that cord grips are much harder to clean, take a time to dry before use and the cost used to be much more than conventional.  I used standard Callaway grips for most of the past 10 years.

I now use Tour Velvet +4s, on all but the putter.  They are all one double wrap oversized.  I can clean them on the fly.  The Plus 4s are better sized in the right hand for me.

Now as far as putters are concerned, I have used/tried almost everything on the market including the largest made.

I now use a standard GolfPride Tour because of its contours and is better for me now that my putting is much better.

A former plus handicapper who must settle for mid 70s to mid 80 scores today.  After taking 10 years off due to back issues, my driver length has decreased by 40 yards on average.  I look forward to any training aids, shaft improvements, club enhancements to get back part of what was lost.

I'm still deciding if I like the sandpaper-ish feel of the Utx cords or the grip from the 360 pattern.

It is an excellent putter grip. After testing them, I am an admitted fan boy, but I believe most golfers can benefit from using them.

Currently at 3 but only until I can get my 3 wood replaced and then I will get that one regripped to be like the rest. Wedges are stock, while everything else is oversized. I kind of like the smaller grips on the wedges.
