How To Regrip With Air Compressor

Recommended Posts

I wonder if the Star Grips cup attachment would work with the Harbor Freight air gun or device like yours above. I just don't know the sizes of the threaded parts for that attachment to connect to.

It comes with the two different connection pieces! So should fit any air compressor.

Oh sweet. I didn't notice that. I need to order that up today then. Thanks.

May help to have a few extra wraps under and someone suggested hairspray! Put a little on prior then blow the grip on and when it dries it will have that little bit of stick.

The hairspray is a nice idea … but the only thing we have on hand is probably hair gel. 😄

I’ll give this some thought and what I’ve got that’ll work next time.

The second one was with my Callaway Rogue ST Max 3-wood. Same grip, but unfortunately, there was slippage between the both ends. I couldn’t get it to settle down, and I’m not sure why. Both are graphite shafts, Adila and Tensei, and it’s the same grip model. So I went with the conventional way—tape and solvent.

Is it possible that you stretched or bunched the length on the Callaway install? It’s hard to tell for certain from your photos but that could be part of the problem. I always double check the air installed grip length to make sure it matches a loose grip. Stretching or bunching the length can cause a mismatch between the shaft handle section OD and intended corresponding grip taper ID (read: may cause slippage).

I typically need some minor adjustments to make the installed length match. In my case, usually a bit more stretch because I only apply force to the butt end, so that the grip is more likely to install without any twist. But it can also go the other way if you’re pulling on the grip too much with your other hand. My bag is graphite top-to-bottom with air installed Star Sidewinders, I never use any kind of shaft buildup and haven’t experienced any slipping.

I've done it before using either one of these attachments that came with my compressor. It's not as easy, but it does work.

I have the “Pro” Star gun and butt cap attachment but the brass shouldered taper tip you have circled is actually my favorite. The shoulders seem to create a really good seal point that’s actually flush against the interior of the butt, and because of that, I can normally dial back my regulator pressure enough that I don’t have to worry nearly as much about blowouts or grip wall bubbles.

That’s a great point!

I checked my installation of the 4-hybrid, and you’re correct, it is stretched by a half-inch—an easy fix, for sure. I can’t recall what happened when I tried the air compressor method with the 3-wood, but it’s possible that’s what happened.

I’ll check a little more closely when I do a couple other clubs later this week.

I have found that if you get the inside grip wet it does a few things. Helps it slide on even easier and cleans off dirt which helps it stick when dry. Once in place I run a little more air through to blow out most the moisture and they are ready to use soon after.

Measure the shaft O.D.  There might have been a small discrepancy in the shaft size.  A digital caliper is a useful tool in the shop.

I wonder what is, if any, ideal psi for this method?

Depends on the grip. Some only need 45-60 psi but I’ve found some putter pistol grips from super stroke I’ve had to crank the psi way up and added some solvent to get on.

I do something similar. I usually put a little mineral spirits around the tip of the grip to help it slide on and get started.

Good to know that Superstroke is doable via air as well, as I have two putters waiting for grip change while learning the method with standard grips.

I would use the traditional method while you get the hang of it cause they can be very tight and require more solvent than usual anyway.

First off thank you for the article!  Very helpful indeed. I was successful for my 2nd try on installing a grip. (1st attempt was months ago and was a horrible experience. Had to take it to a golf shop)

I didn't have any solvent,  but had some liquid chain lube that dries very tacky after 10 minutes. 1 wrap of tape.

It got stuck here.

20240310_112831.jpg.b4d9696579d8dc1d2a707020d07792a2.jpg

Little air bump from that back, it ballooned in the middle, and gave it a quick tug to finish it to the tape.

The end result.

Is there a specific thread for re- gripping clubs? I can't find it.

Glad you were able to get the grip on after a bit of effort! I posted this in the JumboMax grips user group thread, but I used air to put on the JMX STR8 grips on my Dr, 3w, 5w & 4hy. It went very well for me setting the output pressure to 60psi, pushing the grip on a bit, bumping the trigger, pushing the grip on a bit more. I didn’t use any addition solvent or anything.

I blow on grips when I am testing new grips all of the time.  I put a piece of tape at the end of the grip and poke a hold through the middle with an inflation needle.  Works great.

This may be a dumb question, but has anyone blown on MCC+4 grips? If so, how have you found them to be in terms of rotating or moving once they're in place?

I'm big on MCC+4's for my grips, but worried about any potential slippage or movement during or after the swing such that they become misaligned.

I have blown on MCC +4 with no issue. Just make sure you prep the shaft well to remove any oils etc.  I usually use acetone and then I torch it to burn off any residual oil or reside.  Just a quick once over with my little butane torch.
