GolfSpy_APH
Shot a 58 on the Aarau 4D minigolf course while my wife shot a 60. I had 2 hole in 1s in the last 3 holes to put the match away. I had Ivan in the carrier as my handicap and had to putt one handed, but overall very satisfied with my performance. Was a fun course with some trippy visuals and one really stupid boat hole that had severe down slope then up slope with I had a max score on. Left every putt short... I'll blame it on the baby as he didn't caddy well for me on that hole! I didn't struggle with bad ball striking!! I mishit so many iron shots; the only ones that were decent on Par 3's where I could get the ball off the wet, dewy grass. Driver was better today, and my putter was awesome; two long birdies and many long par-savers. The greens are the best they have been all year. Popular Post Tom the Golf Nut
Just got back home from my trip to St. Louis. Meetings with customers for the first part of the week. Then conducted a lunch and learn for a potential new customer. Then the fun started on Thursday with the first of two golf outings. A beautiful sunny day with a high of 75 degrees. I didn't play my best but we finished up in the middle of the pack at four under. This was the primer outing for Friday and to get your body tuned up for consumption. Friday I was paired up with a very fun group. I play with this same group every year at this outing. I knew what the day would be like as history has a way of repeating itself. I was advised up front that I was there to carry the team and they were there to consume. Once I saw a full bottle of tequila, a bag of limes, a full bottle of Knob Creek, and two full collers of beer ( for our foursome) I knew I had to get my game on. I was given the rules right after we birdied the first hole. You must do a shot for every birdie . This could be a very long post but I'll keep it short. Two of my golf partners play once or twice a year. The third played more often but informed me he was good for the first 5 holes but then it goes down hill due to consumption. But I will say this group was so much fun. All happy-go-lucky and cutting up on each other. No one got hurt, fell down,, or even got a bruised ego. But many balls were lost to the course or should I say forest. I played my ass off and we came in at six under. Believe me I was very happy with that. During the awards afterward they called out our names and we came in first place in B flight. Another trophy for the shelf and a rather nice Visa gift card per person for our efforts. Then it was off to the bar due to a personal invite from the president of the company. I couldn't say no, it was a business thing. I did only drink cokes though. I had a 4:30 am hotel check out. I got 4 hours of sleep but made my flights. I don't think I'll be playing my usual 8am round tomorrow morning. cnosil, GolfSpy TCB, MattF and 11 others 13 1 Quote Driver, TSi 1 S Flex 3 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 7 Wood, Aerojet Max UST Helium Nanocore R Flex 5 Hybrid King Tec MMT R Flex Irons, Vice VGI01 Mitsubishi Wiz 60-gram regular flex (6 - PW) VGW01, 50 Degree. Popular Post edingc
Found out this morning that today was likely the last Sunday my course will be open for the season. Owner has invited me out whenever I want through the fall while they work on prepping for winter, but today was likely the last "real" round of golf at home for the season. When I started this morning it was barely 40 degrees. When I left three hours later only a few cars were in the parking lot, so I understand why he won't bother to stay open. Probably one of the best ball striking days of the year with full swings. Pretty much everything was flushed today, except when it wasn't. And my short game was poor, and my putting was mediocre. All of that leads to an 86, which is one of the highest scores of the year. I'm disappointed with the score, but man did I hit some really solid shots today. Popular Post cnosil
haven't swing a club or hit balls for a couple of weeks and it showed today. Weather was nice but chilly; started out in the 40 and was in the 60s after the 5 hour round concluded. Struggled a little with driver and was hitting push fades. Irons weren't too bad. Short game was terrible, hit a shank on the first hole, some terrible chips including one hole where the ball rolled back to my feet 4 times . I have been reviewing some putting material from David Orr and Geoff Mangum and overall I putted pretty well. I did have a couple of 3 putts and a 4 putt, but those were more mental breakdowns and not really putting issues. 9 FW, 7 GIR, 33 putts 45/43:88 (3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 quad) JerryB, RichL85, cksurfdude and 8 others 11 Quote Driver: G400 Max 9* w/ KBS Tour Driven Fairway: Paradym AI Smoke Max HL 16.5* w/MCA TENSEI AV Series Blue Hybrids: 915H 21* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype 915H 24* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype Irons: TR20V 6-11 w/Vizard TR20-85 Graphite Wedge: 54/12D, 60/8M w/Accra iWedge 90 Graphite Putter: Render w/VA Composites Baddazz Backup Putters: Sacks Parente MC 3 Stripe, Milled Collection RSX 2 Member: MGS Hitsquad since 2017
Popular Post Kenny B
OK day today. Hit some nice shots; hit some stinkers, including 2 shanks... haven't hit one of those in a few weeks, and two show up. Cost me two shots. Shot 39/39 for 78 with 2 birdies; no doubles!! My wife equaled her best round ever with 43/39 for 82... also with 2 birdies, but an unfortunate double on #16 or she would have beat me on the back nine. She has been using the Nike Method mallet putter that I tested for MGS Forum several years ago, but she thought that something was wrong with the face insert. She was thinking about an EVNROLL putter until I showed her what the price was. I had a brand new Cleveland Belly putter that I got cheap when they were banned, and cut it down to 31". I added weight at the top of the shaft, and it feels pretty good. She started using it for the Ladies Club Championship a couple of weeks ago, and she is getting to be quite deadly with it. Popular Post cksurfdude
Well today was one of those some pretty good / some not so pretty not so good rounds.... Took a new 4H out and I think I'm liking it; been doing some testing to fill that spot in the bag. Highlight hole was #9 - a short, straight Par 4 with a pretty wide fairway that slopes down toward a small pond fronting the green .. which slopes steeply up towards the back half of the green where the pins typically are. Made solid contact on the tee shot but despite that wide fairway, sliced the ball into the trees... Couldn't find it, took a drop, punched out and then as I was walking up I found my original ball .. not as far right as I'd thought plus closer to the hole! Still in the trees but I actually kinda had a shot out thru a small window between two trees between me and the green .. what the heck took an 8i, hit it nicely but just clipped a leaf which deflected it just a hair but the ball still caught the right edge of the back half of the green; rolled off the side and just into the rough. Chipped on and dead at the flagstick, but just a little too much energy and the ball rolled over the edge of the cup and kept going another like 20-25 feet. Comeback putt was slightly downhill and very slightly left to right at the end - freaking NAILED IT for my first par on that hole * EDIT: Just realized I also scratched out a Par on #3 (and kinda the same pattern as described above) ... also first time on that hole this season!! ejgaudette, CarlH, cnosil and 8 others 11 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... Popular Post cksurfdude
Not specific to one round but a little bit more general good news: Now I *know* that I have the potential to score in the mid-/upper 80s!! In August my wife and I took a trip upstate and I'll call it a (very) "provisional" 18 hole score of 85 - because I lost a few balls off the tee, and on second shots too?!!, that ended up in unseen hazards .. and by the time I looked at the round on ShotScope I'd totally forgotten which holes and where the penalties were... Popular Post JerryB
Owen and I played the front nine at River Heights today. A little on the chilly side but otherwise a beautiful day. We played pretty close to normal, but we were both pretty out of sorts with the swing. Owen kept hitting pop-ups that went hard left or right with his driver and we both were terrible on par three tee shots. I'm starting to get a little hooky with all my clubs again; many of my swings just felt disjointed. And while I'd love to blame the aerated greens, my putting was really terrible. On the plus side, I'm happy with my progress that I don't feel like I played well but still cobbled together a score of (+10) 46, one off of Owen's score. Popular Post GolfSpy TCB
I was able to get out this evening (while my Mariners were blowing their lead in the 9th to lose via Alavarez's walk off 3 run home run) to play 9 holes and give my new TSR3 a proper first outing. Hit 7 out of 7 fairways and averaged 256 yards (my normal average is in the 245 range) with two drives over 270. It is fair to say that I am LOVING the TSR3!! Hit 8 of 9 greens and shot 2 under 34 (7 pars and 2 birdies). This will be 1/2 of a future round posted in Week 3 of the MGS Forum Virtual Championship Tour... hoping to hold it together for the next 9!! Syks7
Sigh. 42/43 85. I feel weird that I can be disappointed in an 85. It was just one of those days where I feel like the score was not reflective of my play. I was great off the tee 10/14 Fairways and the 4 misses were just a little off. My approach game was serviceable. 6/18 GIR with a lot of the rest being in Texas Wedge range. My short game was pretty good, I had a reasonable par putt opportunity on all but 1 hole. I also putted better than 35 putts would suggest. My guess is that if I'd have been 3" (combined) towards the center of the cup this 85 would be in the 77 range. I just wasn't missing my much -- brushed edge with a six inch tap in left. Nothing would drop. It was kind of that way with everything. Good approach shots, good chips, but just not quite good enough. The high point today was definitely my new Driver. I want to temper my expectations, but I think I'm in love with it. The distance drop off I was a little worried about didn't exist. It was every bit as long as my M2, and because of the forgiveness, much longer on average. No banana slices or super spinny pull hooks. Just straight with some baby fades and draws. The head seems super forgiving. There were a couple strikes that I know were a little on the heel or high on the face and it still just poked out straight down the fairway. The shaft is pretty much what I hoped for, it delivers the face to the ball reasonably close to square. The only time it got out of sorts is when my transition got too aggressive and the only thing that happened was just a benign short straight pull. Just down the left side in the rough. If I'd put that kind of swing on my M2 I'd either be hitting from within the trees or re-teeing from pull hooking into oblivion. It's still honeymoon period but it's hard to see myself trading this in for a while. Generally when I get along with a club this well it tends to stay in the bag for a very long time. JerryB
It was overcast and threatening to rain so Owen didn't want to play today. I decided to chance it and walk 18 at River Heights and also played the forward tees on a whim. It was different. Had to lay up on a few holes to avoid running out of fairway and two holes were actually more difficult due to narrower launch points. I started out hot with three pars (a first) and was +1 through five before I got overly aggressive and hooked a drive OB for a double. Recovered well and made the turn with a PB 39. Fell off the pace on the back as my putting really fell apart to the tune of four 3 putts. Still hung on enough to shoot 44 on the back for a PB (+11) 83. No birdies but 11 pars. We have a scramble outing on Saturday and I really feel confident heading in. cksurfdude, Syks7, edingc and 4 others 7 Quote Cobra Aerojet Max driver Cobra Aerojet Max 3 wood and 7 wood Cobra Aerojet 4/5/6 hybrids Cobra Aerojet 7-PW, GW Cobra Snakebite 52° and 58° wedges Cobra King Stingray 20 putter
Popular Post edingc
Played what might be the last round of the year yesterday afternoon. College roommate of mine was in from Florida and we went over to the only course in the area with no deciduous trees (no leaves to deal with). Because it was nearly 70 and sunny when we started, the course was packed. So we decided to scramble as we were paired with a retired couple playing their own balls. Ended up being a decent pace as we finished in about 3:45 with only a few longer waits between shots. The scramble decision was a good one as the 10-15 MPH winds turned into 30+ MPH winds as the day progressed. It was all we could do to muster a +4, but we at least played the back at even par. We both lost our tee shots on the first hole and ended up with a double so in reality we played pretty evenly despite the conditions. Took me a few holes to settle in, but going over my shots last night I had a lot to be happy with. Couple of awful shots, but I was pretty good from 100 yards and in and had two awesome tee shots: A 3/4 wood over the water on a short par four the stopped 20 feet from the pin and lead to a tap-in birdie. A very, very long wind-aided drive. I crushed it and the combination of the wind and firm fairways helped me out. Had I put it a little left I would have ended up driving the green and into the group in front of us! It's been a wonderful year of golf, and I'm glad I got to wrap it up with a fun day (even with the crazy wind!). MaxEntropy
I've had this swing thought the last couple weeks: "smooth". I think that really turned into "slow" and "trying to steer the ball" so there have been a few struggles, even though I have scored pretty well (thanks to short game). After the second hole last night, it occurred to me to swing my swing and let it rip. Strangely, whatever I WAS doing was causing back pain, but when I started swinging more aggressively, it resulted in less pressure on my lower back, so it must have been a mechanical mess. The results were MUCH better, both off the tee and on approach. I ended up with 3 bogies and 6 pars. Short game was again very good, even though the greens have been punched since last Tuesday (the ball still rolled pretty well). I had a hard-pan bounce aided 300 yard drive and a downwind 272 yard drive that got slowed by a tree. I hope this is a good sign, but there is not a lot of golf time left - snow is starting to show up in the long-term forecast.
