How'd you play?

Played better today and all was pretty good.

still missed 3-4 makable birdie putts within 10 feet- I’m just not a good putter, and I really need to get serious about improving that aspect. I’m good at lags, it’s just those inside of ten feet I seem so good at missing…

I guess I need to buy a good putting mat or something

I started playing again early last year after a long break, and it took so long to find a rhythm and putting stroke that worked for me, but having a putting mat really genuinely helped with that. I just kept putting over and over and trying various things with my hand position and how I gripped the putter til I just hit a point that my hands were comfortable and steady, and I had a smooth, repeatable stroke that felt consistent. From there I just practiced that stroke daily, so now on a course I don't even think about it, I just line up and putt.

Got out after working a little more than 1/2 day, and the weather was blue skies, sunshine, and about a 15-20 mph breeze.

Had to start on the back 9, as they had leagues scheduled for the front, and I would be able to be in the clear of them by the time I made the turn.

Was paired up with a couple other men, younger than myself, and SWMBO did come along to ride and see the sights.

Highlight of my round was a birdie on my first hole, number 10. A 365-yard par 4 where I hit driver, PW to 15 feet right of the flag and drained the putt.

Left a few other birdie putts on the edge or just by the hole without the ball taking the break I played for.

Had another consistent 40 - 40 for an 80 total, with 13 of 18 fairways, but only 9 of 18 greens.

Most shots that missed the green were too long, not by much but a lot of them were in-between club yardages for me, and I felt more comfortable taking the longer club and making what I thought would have been an easier swing.

Still, this is my 5th full round in Michigan before the end of June, which puts me way ahead of the limited time I was able to play last year.

Played 8 holes of bogey golf with a triple tucked in there. Tee game was solid, but some bad turf interaction taking deep divots on approach shots.

Wedge play was above average putting slightly below average. Not much luck all day. 46 on the par 35 is worse than my best effort by a whole stroke per hole.

Finding a way to turn birdies into bogeys since 1992. #TeamChunks

The birdie on the Par 5 11th was for sure it. Hit a great drive but was still 250+ out from the pin and knew I couldn’t get there in 2 realistically so played it safe. Decided to hit a PW to get to about 130, then hit my 9 iron to 14’. Sank the downhill putt. Was easily the highlight reel hole!

Alright getting a little time to sit down and reflect on todays round. The obvious killers were two Quads and two Triple Bogeys. Not going to break 90 doing that, but I was able to break 100 for the first time legitimately that I can remember and I am PUMPED about that.

Highlights were ZERO three putts, and I am really proud of that. My lag putting was really solid as I had two 1st putts from outside 40’, one from outside 30’ and 5 from outside 20’. I also had three one putts, with the highlight for birdie which was a 14’ downhill putt. Putter has really been working for me and according to Arccos I am +1.6 SG against a 20 handicap.

Including a screenshot of the Par 5 11th that I birdied. Hit a 261 yard drive but missed left of my target and the hole is a dog leg right, so I was left with over 250 to get to the green. I knew I couldn’t make it in two, so played strategically and hit a PW next to get me into range of scoring clubs I am most comfortable with. Followed it with a pured 9 iron that flew directly over the top of the flag, landed and rolled two feet at the most, and sank a 14’ downhill putt for birdie.

All in all, I had 5 pars and the one birdie, which is the best I have done in 18 holes. I need to work most on my approach as that is where I am giving up the most strokes according to Arccos and that is clear from my play today. Too many fat misses on approach shots and I would say those cost me at least those 7 strokes if not a few more.

I feel like I have made some small strides over the past two weeks and I am going to continue to work towards those small steps and try to creep closer to 90. I am also employing the thought process of bogey golf, and giving myself an extra shot to get to the green. Helps me relax more on that first approach and after today, I am very confident I can two putt most (not always) holes.

Wife and I played a course yesterday I haven’t played since last summer.  It’s a challenging course and harder than my normal tracks, but have always liked.  Recently have been recovering from a back rib injury progressively improving but lingering, so haven’t done any serious practice in a couple weeks. Iron accuracy has suffered as a result, but drives staying consistently good.

Happy with an 84 with 8 pars.  Good news/bad news, four 3-putts but the greens can be tricky if not familiar with, and that was the case, so 35 putts total with four 1 putts.  Iron accuracy was improved, and misses were closer.  Wind was also a factor and PCC was adjusted by -1.  Drives were great and felt really great with the round, recognizing it could have been much better.

Woof. Worst round of golf I’ve had in over a year. Thinking I’ve been practicing too much lately and as a result - definitely thinking too much on the course. Think I’ll need to put ‘em down for a bit to “reset” my swing thoughts. This happen to anyone else?

Another decent 18 for  me this morning with a 46/43 for my second 89 of the weekend. Putting was horrible on the front but, I was able to get that under control on the back. Aside from that, tee shots were a bit of a struggle for most of the round today. Not sure what the deal was but, I never really felt 100% comfortable on the tee box. Might need to take a few swings in the back yard this afternoon to see if I can pinpoint what the deal was.

Today I played a round of golf with a friend at a local course.  I played as well as I ever had.  I will have to look at my history, but I am thinking this was the best round I have ever played.  I recently started playing a new ball, and my my distance off the tee, and accuracy, greatly improved.  Driver and putter performed wonderfully today.  Short game was not bad either.  What I need to work on now is long irons.

On the range this morning at 7am I re-injured my left thumb.  I did it about a year ago and changed up my grip so my thumb was off the side of the grip instead of  on top.  It was tucked into the palm of my right hand, and that grip has been working but for some reason my thumb was painful again.  Any swing I could feel pressure from my right hand on my left thumb.  Shots went everywhere except where I wanted them to.  So I switched to a 10 finger grip from my normal overlap.  I could swing without pain, but lost quite bit of yardage.  So.....

I managed to par the first two holes because they are short par 4's.  I even had a PAAS on #2.  What's a PAAS?  Par after a shank!  🥴  The name of the game today was SCRAMBLE!!   Took a double on #3 and on #5 but managed to scramble around the front nine in +5... 42

Bogeyed the first three holes on the back nine, but had a birdie on #14 after stuffing my 60º.  A few more par saves, including two sandys, and another bogey gave me a a back nine +3... 38  With a sore left thumb and right wrist I feel pretty happy with a round of 80.  My wife and I played with two guys we've never met before (Don and Phil... I called them The Everly Brothers 😃).  Don said when we shook hands on #18... "You play pretty good!"  Well, at least I'm not a slouch!!  🤣

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

... Such a Catch 22, especially for us older players battling injuries from playing other sports in our youth or just the wear and tear of aging and playing a lot of golf. My back and shoulder have been a problem for months and it's either play through it and enjoy the sunshine, fresh air, camaraderie and grinding out scores while making a flawed swing due to injury somehow work or sit at home. I find it amazing that the body ignores the conscious asking to execute a proper swing and listens to the subconscious telling the body to protect itself at all costs and a golf swing is the enemy. The biggest problem is not letting compensations become engrained because it takes much longer to get rid of a bad compensation habit than it does to pick it up. Good luck with your thumb!

Thanks!  I understand that.  I didn't change anything about my swing other than the 10 finger grip.  I actually hit the ball fairly well, but no where near the distances I'm used to.  By the time I got to #16 my thumb was feeling... well let's just say less painful, so I went back to my overlap grip.  Hit my best drive of the day and back to normal distance.  After a par on the par 3 #17, my drive on #18 wasn't my best but it was in the middle of the fairway and my thumb didn't hurt... much.

I'm not playing for the next couple of days, so I'm hoping the rest and CBD will get it back to normal.

41-40-81 on Friday and 44-39-83 on Saturday (same course both days, playing from white tees at just over 6,200 yards). I played pretty well both days (6 birdies on Friday, but four double bogeys killed my chances of shooting close to my age. Saturday’s round featured far fewer birdies (only 3), but also only two double bogeys.

The highlights of Friday’s round were a 304-yard drive that I hit on a par-5 (second shot was 15-20 feet past the pin, and I left the eagle putt a foot short), and a par-5 on the back nine that I usually have trouble with because it is a 50 degree dogleg left hole where everything runs very hard left-to-right. I played this hole 3 hybrid - 3 hybrid - 40 yard SW pitch to inside 8 feet - made birdie putt.

I am generally happy with the way I have been playing lately, but I need to eliminate my double bogey holes, which almost always are the result of trying shots that I should not even consider.  Only one double bogey on Friday was not due to such a poor course management decision.  On that hole, I actually played the hole exactly as planned, but hit the tee shot too “pure” and ran the tee shot that I hit with a 3 hybrid through the fairway and into the water hazard. I usually hit a 4-wood or even my driver off the tee on this #1 handicap hole, but I had just a bit of a tailwind on Friday and managed to hit a perfect 235-240 yard 3 hybrid.

It was 304 yards — I fixed that typo.
