BJM Putter / Putter Grips

Recommended Posts

Further to an earlier post, and by recommendation from more seasoned members, it was suggested that wrote a few words about these putters. I originally stumbled upon this company by accident really as a friend had one of their grips on a putter. I have previously reviewed their grips but in short this company has developed a putting system for which there are many explanatory videos on you tube and also on their website. http://bjmputtergrips.com

In short the grip aims to have the putter held in a palms up position preventing mobility in the wrists and tucking your elbows into to your body stabilising the stroke. The system they have developed is based around a split grip but I found it more comfortable to overlap the grip. Having found that I saw immediate improvements in more “centre strikes” on my putter I posted a few words and pictures on my social media for my friends. In a big surprise for me the designer reached out and we began to chat. Firstly I was really impressed by his passion for the science of putting and it turns out that he has also developed a putter with this science in mind. The research he had carried out was mind boggling some of which I was struggling to understand the math 😂 Detail down to face depth, audible feedback on centre strikes, head weight, adjustable hosel, 3 different lofts on the face etc to name a few, all backed by his research.
After a few conversations to the other side of the world he kindly sent me a putter to test and when it arrived he talked me through all his thoughts by video call!

Ive now played a few rounds with the putter and fitted their premium cabretta leather grip. The quality of their product I found to be top end. Dark cabretta leather grip, black graphic shaft, 435g high MOI 303 milled steel head. (Photos below) and a smart headcover all look the part.

The putter is heel shafted with about a half toe hang. The head feels like it doesn’t want to move through the stroke, extremely stable. The things I liked most were the sight lines vertical and horizontal made alignment so easy and the weight and balance of the head.

The audible sweet spot is created by a slightly hollowed out back portion of the face and took me a little by surprise, as a well hit putt gives a slight “ting” , nothing too offensive but something I’m not used to. It does roll the ball beautifully for me. The grips come in 3 different sizes and the company ships around the world. If you’re looking to change up a little something in your putting it may well be worth checking out! It has been a revelation for me and I’ve made a friend along the way. WIN WIN!
For those interested in the tech stuff the specs provided by the company are below.

That's an interesting grip, I've never seen one like that before. Also, the weight is quite interesting.  Have you found it to be harder to roll in shorter putts?

I've found with heavier putters it's tricky to judge swing speed for those.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Can you provide any pics of the hand position on the grip you were referring to?

Garsen seells a similar shaped grip and it's an interesting concept.  I put this one on my MEZZ two years ago and putted with it for a few weeks before I gave up.

It does look a lot like the Garsen Max.  The testing done last year led me to using the Max on one putter and the Quad Tour.  I included links to those testing forums your convenience.

Hi Rob I’m mean putting is such a personal feel thing, I’ve only put the larger Premium Cabretta leather grip on as this was sent to me to try, (I have the smaller grips on my other putters) It comes in at a weighty 110g so maybe counter balances the head weight a little. Personally I find the shorter ones a little easier as it is very stable and you can pretty much just drop it on the back of the ball. For me personally I prefer the smaller blades or semi blades for judging pace on the longer ones. Interestingly when I put my Bettinardi BB28 against the BJM the face is longer on the bettinardi!! It’s like an optical illusion 😂

Hi there I had the Garsen Max on my putter prior and enjoyed it, for reference having had both it is a LOT bigger than the Garsen and considerably more tear dropped shaped but the bio mechanics would be the same the same I guess 👍

Hi there yes the Garsen max was my grip prior to this and is a lot smaller and more rounded, guess the science behind it would be the same though

Hi Rob here’s a couple of pics from the website of the standard kotahi grip with a split grip as used by the designer in white and the undersized grip in my hands still “Palms Up” but overlapped in black. Kind regards

Thanks.  His grip is definitely more spread out than I expected! From the first 2 pics I'd almost see myself wanting to rotate my hips.

Crikey!!! That thing is a monster!  I thought it looked a little larger than the Garsen in the original pics, but looking at the first two shots in this series, WOW!

I guess you cannot fit that thing in a 14 slotted bag.

I would say it’s very tall and thin, it has no where near the girth of say a 2thumb grip but the top side stands high so the thumbs fit down the side. Haha so from side on it looks like it’s that size all the way around 😂

  • 1 month later...

Just fitted this grip to my Odyssey Stroke Lab Seven in the last few weeks - my gamer is/was a Mizuno M-Craft VI fitted with a Zenergy XL Flatso 2.0+ and a 25g CounterCore weight. Grip weight of the Kotahi is 100g so not too much difference for me to notice.

The "palms up" technique does take a lot of getting used to so before using on the course (last few weeks) I hit ball after ball on the matt at home. Initial findings for me so far in real use have been better consistency, certainly on line with my setup - my miss was a push. Another big plus is my lag putting has got so much better.

Is it a game changer, well that's to be seen, but I'm loving it so far
