    How'd you play?

Yeah, 6700 is pretty much my limit. It's normally not the par 4s and 5s that get me, but long par 3s where I have to hit hybrids or 5w, I'm toast. Golf is hard man. Stick to it and something will click! Then after it does and you think you have everything figured out, you'll play like dog water. Vicious cycle! Nice round on a new course! Good luck again! I think the system has its benefits, but playing with someone who is writing down the results of every shot, when they're struggling, sucks. Wanted to kick @mr.hicksta in the nuts when he was doing it, but I didn't say anything cuz I'm a good friend

  2. Man what a round. My cousin and I halfed the Match play round from last Thursday so we carried over to this week. Gorgeous day and the course was as always in great shape. The greens were hard to stick and super fast. Super impressed with how my cousin has shaped the course. The first and second cuts around the green were just incredible Overall I was happy with the score result of 41 but disappointed I took as many penalties as I did (3). 2 birdies, 2 pars, 2 bogies and 3 doubles!!!!!! First hole looked like it was gonna be fantastic. Great tee shot middle of the fairway and I ended up skulling my 2nd shot over the green and took a penalty. 2nd hole blocked my tee shot. Took a drop and doubled again after a really great 2nd (technically 3rd after the drop) shot. Best hole of the day was hole 3. Took an easy 3 wood and put a gap wedge to 3’ on by far the hardest green on the course. Made the bird The nest several holes we halved and stayed at down 1 (first hole came around to bite us) until the 8th. I’ll preface with the 2 we were playing against were the pro who’s a good golfer and an 18 years old kid who literally is just amazing to watch play. No flaws in his game. On 8 we both hit good drives opposite sides of the fairway. I hit my 3 wood from the rough and carried the green rolled to the first cut, chipped on made the birdie putt. The kid puts his second shot to 12’ made eagle To win. Was just impressive because he eagled last week too .. was a blast of a round just wish I didn’t take the really bad penalties I did!

  3. Father's Day sale ($200 off) was too good to pass up: Still have some work to do before I can use the garage, but looks like no more need to go to the heated range in the winter anymore... will save me 3+ hours each weekend and lots of gas/wear and tear!

  4. Eastern NC Course Alert!!!! There is an incredible course in Rocky Mount, NC, Belmont GC. Got to play it for the 1st time Sunday, 6/6 and returned 6/8 to get some stink out. Fairways are exceptional and greens very nice (Tifeagle Bermuda). 1st round 4 putted the 1st hole and hit my tee shot OB on #2, those 4 strokes turned a 78 into an 83 :(. Had a couple other, "1st time playing the course" mistakes that I corrected. Tuesday there is "Throwback Tuesday" where the greens fees are much lower, a senior can play for under $30!

    How'd you play?

Another 83 yesterday in Round one of the Diamante Classic. Our team came in 3rd in our flight for the round of Better Ball. Didn't pay for the daily payout, but it did pay off for the Player Pool (Calcutta). I had 4 doubles as the wet ground and unfamiliar greens continue to give me some issues. Today's event will be a modified Stableford. Looking for the team to do a bit better. The guys we played with yesterday were on fire and ham and egging it well, shooting a net 63 mainly because the higher handicap player of that team didn't seem to make that many mistakes on the stroke holes. We came in with a net 68 having both of us making a double on one of the holes. Second was a net 65. This is a really nice course, albeit wet from the heavy rains of recent days. Level lies are relatively rare and the greens all have multiple levels and lots of undulations.

    How'd you play?

Well it's a real struggle for me at the moment course condition not really suiting my game. Got beat in my matchplay tie 5 and 4 that's me out of all the matchplay events had 85 net 79 on Saturday's comp. Then got beat in the League match yesterday 5 and 4. We have had very little rain in Scotland over the past 3 weeks and the courses are playing firm and fast. Yesterday we also had a +20mph wind. Getting loads of distance just can't get the ball to stop. 9th 140yds to go hit a small PW bounces on the green twice and disappears onto the railway line. Being 4 down at the 304yd 12th, partner in the fairway, smoked one down wind at green through the back into the penalty area. I must have gone through 10 of the 14 matchplay holes with my approach shots. Another 2 I tried to play short and run in and they ended up short. Chipping is also a struggle off tight lies. In the doldrums at the moment maybe need to try and practise knockdown shots because my high ball flight is totally unpredictable. Playing a couple of links courses next week and entering the ballot for the Old Course so hoping for better play.

  8. This weeks Driver June 10 Mizuno ST-X Stats: 6/10 6/10 fairways. A few holes set up short and more designed for 3 wood than driver. It actually gets high marks for accuracy the 6/10 is a bit deceiving as the 4 misses were all very playable, not one bad drive really in the mix from an accuracy standpoint. All just barely in first cuts of rough and just about all had the same ball flight, didn't very much at all from my normal slight fade shot, no matter the line I started it on. However distance is what kept this from getting higher marks. It is without a doubt the shortest driver of the batch that I have it so far. It's well documented that I'm not a long hitter and even shorter since my recent return from COVID, but this was consistently 10 to 20 yards shorter than any other drives I have hit this year, I think the longest was 182 and I hit some very solid what looked to be good drives coming off the club and then got out there and they just didn't measure up. All were measured with my SX500 and we had dry firm conditions with no wind to speak of. Matter of fact my longest drive of the day came with my ZX 3 wood at 205 yards..(note that club will need a review of it's own...it's that good!) see below in comfort for some more thoughts on this. Comfort: 5/10 This driver feels and is heavy. It's head weight is 204 grams, which is a good 10 grams heavier than some other companies drivers. The X is a "draw" biased driver which other companies that offer that model typically offer it in a lighter weight as often the draw bias demographic is an older slower swinging crowd---hand raised. Mizuno does have the J Spec option in this driver with a bit longer shaft and lighter weight head, which I believe comes with a 194 gram head. So perhaps that is the route I should have gone. I would say the heavier weight might have helped with the accuracy of the driver, not that I'm in accurate by any means. Last weeks results not withstanding, but perhaps it helped keep the club path a bit more on plane and was partially responsible for the tighter dispersion I mentioned. But I need all the distance a driver can muster, so this one fell a bit short in that regard---no pun intended Sound: 8/10 No issues here at all, it has a nice sound for a carbon fiber crown construction. A bit more of a crack than the Epic but not what you'd get from the TSI--which is on a whole different level of sound than any other driver--IMO! Overall: 6/10 I would say if accuracy is your primary need you might really want to give this one a look, along with I'm sure the PING G425. As it shines in that area, I did like how I was able to count on the consistent flight it was going to provide, not so much in height but in direction. The lack of distance compared to some of the others in my lineup is a deal breaker for me. But for others that may not be an issue. If I have the time---and money, I may look at trading it for the Japan Spec model later in the year just to see.

    DJ is a treasure....

While his statement is funny and How DJ responds is also numerous, there is a lot that can be learned from it. We don’t have a lot of control over where the ball actually goes and you just have to play what you end up with; almost not care.

  11. I figured that, since I pulled the trigger on the Father's Day discount on a Mevo+, I needed to start this thread as a parallel to my SkyTrak thread. (If anyone is wondering, I am selling the SkyTrak. I'd rather sell here than eBay, so shoot me an offer!) Why am I making this move? The biggest reason is that the Mevo+ offers the flexibility of use indoor and outdoor (the SkyTrak struggles in direct sunlight, which I experienced firsthand this spring). Our garage is big enough (I'm nearly certain) to allow the Mevo+ to work inside; the space needed for the Mevo+ inside is the biggest knock on it. But over the next few months, I'll update this thread with my thoughts on the Mevo+, especially compared to the SkyTrak (since they're about the same price point). Currently, UPS is showing a delivery date of next Wednesday, so I'll be burning up my F5 button until the brown truck arrives. If you have any particular questions about either device, post it! I've had two years with my SkyTrak, so I think I've got a good handle on that LM. Also, a bit of a BST note here: if anyone has an older (but not too old) iPad or iPhone that's no longer needed, shoot me a DM. It has to be an iPhone 8 or an iPad 5th gen (both of which were released in 2017; or newer, but I'm looking for cheap, not awesome). The Mevo+ includes the option of playing sim golf on iOS, but I'm an Android diehard.

  13. right; that's the funny part. how else are you supposed to answer that question? yeah, they're professionals, but they don't have this magic power over a golf ball. Hit the shot, go find it, hit the next shot.... it's a pretty simple game that a lot of people like to make really really complex.

  14. Quick driving range session at lunch today. It’s easy to see why my 52* is my favorite club in the bag - this is from 5 consecutive shots (one of them was a low-flighted spinner off the bottom groove, the others were all identical): Unfortunately the longer my irons get, the further out towards the toe I tend to make contact. Something to keep working on I guess, here’s my 9 iron:

  15. Had an interesting range session this afternoon - haven't been hitting balls in practice too much as my back has been acting up, and want to kinda save it for actual play, but I really needed (not "wanted" .. *needed*!) to try to work out my problems with hitting a golf ball sitting up on a tee. After loosening up with a wedge with a series of increasing effort / increasing distance swings, took a 4H and tee'ed up a ball ... Topped. Same as I've been doing way too often on the course. Step back, take a breath, run thru a few rehearsal swings with weight shift, extending the arms, etc etc. Tee up another. Same result. Followed by a few more of the same... I know that I still .. even after many lessons .. have a problem hanging back but I am starting to move through the ball a little. Buuuut... tho my legs and hips are bumping forward, my upper body will still hang back (which is probably one more cause of stress on my back...). Had been thinking about this and decided to experiment: tee'ed the ball slightly lower and moved it a little back. Smack! Ball flew straight downrange. Smack! another; then several more in succession. What a difference! But then I got a little greedy and started hitting another ball too quickly - had a few pull hooks _and_ a few push fades. Hellllooo two way miss! Switched it up and hit a few balls with a 6i and a few with a GW, then back to the 4H off a low tee. Not all great shots but all went downrange and no topped shots. So I'm not gonna say I "solved" my problem, but I am gonna be even more careful going forward with my setup at address

    How'd you play?

Thank you for the encouragement! It's difficult sometimes not to let the frustration seep in, I'm really working on the mental game and yesterday instead of asking "why?" I was working on asking myself "what can I do this next shot?". I wanted to start focusing on using each shot as a learning experience and building different shots for my game. I've done this for a while in my short game and have started relishing challenging greenside shots and that area of my game has improved. I'm also over here rooting hard for you. I enjoy, so much, reading about your game and the desire for you to get better. That's what I love about the group of golfers on here, we're not a bunch of + handicaps bragging about 350 yard drives. Instead, we're regular golfers who enjoy sharing our joys and heartbreaks and all want to be the best at this game we can.

  18. In recent years due to age and injury my swing had become a mess of band aids and compromises. I've been working with an instructor to build domething sustainable for the long haul, and what I'm now doing is shockingly different. That means I have trouble erasing years of muscle memory, and my scores have been poor due to a few disasters per round. I haven't broken 80 yet this year. Today I only had one really poor hole, and I managed to save double with a great pitch. Throw in 3 birdies and 3 bogies for a 74, and it's the best score I have ever had!

  19. SWMBO wanted to stroll through Walmart today as she wanted to show me a new grill. So, begrudgingly I said okay. Thursday is her day to choose what we do. The Walmart is in the midst of a major remodel. I came across this picture… so I said something to an employee and they said the bag was $270 but if I took a pic and went to Customer Service they would honor the $128 price on the sign. I really didn’t need a new bag but my Cobra Ultralight is now 4 years old and fading, so I carried the bag to Customer Service, and, sure enough, they sold it to me for $128! Very nice bag, lightweight and plenty if storage and at less than 1/2 price!

did your doctor bring up how your posture might be exacerbating the disk degeneration? i trained (in a gym, not on computers) IT guys in seattle for a few years and every last one of them presented with the same internally rotated shoulders and thoracic arch that you have. it’s amazing what getting those guys into external rotation and opening up their thoracic spine did for their pain and mobility. something about a doctor putting a 37 year old on arthritis meds and sending him on his way with “just deal with it” doesn’t sit right with me. there’s a ton that can be done that doesn’t involve doctors or drugs.

  29. This is a going to be a great thread with I am sure a lot of great ideas that come from it. That being said I am having a hard time pinpointing anything specific... that could be in part is that over the years their articles and content has covered so much of what I would like them to speak on. At the same time I would love to know more about how the last year has changed golf for us regular golfers. I know numbers have gone up a lot in participation, stock is back logged like crazy across almost ever OEM as well. However what about other new things that have come to golf because of these changes. TXG is doing a push on virtual fits, will that start to become more of a trend and how accurate can they potentially be? Do we see more people walk courses because of some of the restrictions that were in at the time and what other on course things are likely to stay? Raised cups, ball washers being removed and all that which I noticed in Canada and is still there for many.

  30. After dinner my son asked if we could go to the driving range, and who am I to say no to a request like that? We got there too late to use the grass section but thankfully this range has the mats with two sections, one flatter & harder and one that's fluffier that I hit off of to cushion my wrists and elbows as much as I can. Plus, it's harder to hit a good fat shot off of that section of the mat. We had a blast trying to hit various signs out on the range. I bested my son with wedges, hitting the 50 yard marker twice and the 100 yard once while he hit the 200 yard marker on the roll with his 4h The kid overswings like Daly but his coach taught him how to hit fairly straight. If I can get him to stop with the hero shots on the course, he's going to be way better than me sooner rather than later. My 4w was again just so solid off the tee, if anything it had a baby fade but was pretty straight for the most part.

    How'd you play?

Golf is hard and golf is frustrating. We have a good day and even periods where we play well and we have a bad day and periods where we play poorly and wonder why we even play the game. Everyone has gone through this no matter how good of a golfer you are. Play the game like you mentioned and try to enjoy the challenge; just try to accept the prior shot for what it is and try to execute the next shot to the best of your ability.

  32. Ok. So I thought this would be a fun little thing to do as I have been intrigued by the one length concept for a few years now. Some of the concepts of one length irons make sense to me: same stance and same set up should make the player more consistent, you can basically practice 10 clubs with just one as the only real difference is the loft (yes they do now have slightly different lie angles, flex points, and tip stepping, but again, same concept that all the irons are the same length and swing). My biggest worries have always been gapping, and more recently (after demoing at my local Dicks Sporting Goods and Edwin Watts) launch and spin, especially for the long irons (for me they were low, but still long, and rolled out quite a bit). My current gamers are the Wilson D7 Forged in 4 iron through PW (KBS $-Taper Lite, regular flex), with Cleveland RTX 588 Rotex 2.0 wedges (52 bent to 50, 56 bent to 55, and 60 degree). These have been extended a half inch and bent upright one degree. What I am going to try for this adventure are the Cobra Radspeed One Lengths in 5 iron through GW (which lets be honest, with the lofts these really are 4 iron through PW......but anyway....They have the KBS Tour 80-120 depending on club, regular flex) and for right now a Cobra Snakebite One Length 56 degree wedge. These have been extended half and inch. Where is my swing right now......I dunno, somewhere between semi-ok and rusty lawn chair??? (Thanks Roy McAvoy, Tin Cup). I has decent years back, shooting mainly in/around the mid-80s each outing. However, it seemed like every time I moved (military), I found less and less golfers where I worked. So over the last like 5 years, i have averaged like 3-5 rounds annually. This along with lower back issues has really hurt my game. Somehow I got the bug again, bad, like really really bad, so even if I have to simply go play 9 or 18 alone, so be it. I really want to improve, and am determined to do so. I have always had the issue of coming over the top, so my typical miss is, well everywhere, but those low pull hooks seem to be the most frequent. A friend noticed in a video that my right arm was kinda chickenwinging it out there, so going back to good old Ben Hogan's 5 Lessons, I have been working on keeping that right elbow tucked closer to the body, especially in the downswing. Also, while doing that trying to get my distance from the ball right (I am generally a little further than I should be, and therefore am reaching a little bit), get the lower body to start the swing, follow the target line after impact, soooooo......you know........kinda everything. Aaaaanyhooooo, hope I haven't droned on too long. I am going to see how I do with these, and how I like them. But I am also an analyst, and love data. So I am going to use Arccos to track my results and compare to what I have for the Wilson D7s (attached).

One other thing, which will help, I hit the face center so much more, leading to more powerful putts. Need to grind more. This is more me than the putter

  38. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? Golfing now for around 24 years, golfed ALOT in college and when living in Las Vegas. Dropped off when living in Seattle and then after having 2 kids. The last 2 years have been really able to fall back in love with the game and while frustrating that I'm not as good as I used to be, it's okay and I'm in it for the enjoyment and ME time. Currently floating around 19 or 20 handicap...used to be 8-10. What do you love about golf? Golf has given me so much time to relax, destress, work on different aspects of my game, something to focus on when everything else in life has been hectic. Now it's seeing my almost 5 year old fall in love with the game! He's been swing the clubs in the yard for 2.5/3 years now and is starting lessons. He's been sticking through 18 holes lately and just giving me a new reason to play this amazingly frustrating game that is so relaxing and an opportunity to bond with people. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? started following this past year during the pandemic and wanting to really get back to my old playing form. While that might not happen, i've been really enjoying reading more and learning new aspects. I don't know any other Spies yet. Where are you from? What is your home course? Currently living in Burlington, VT. No official home course. I really like to spread the rounds out. So far this season I've hit up 6 different courses and have another 5-6 in the works! Typically play at Kwiniaska just down the street from my office. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Best part is you can typically get out on a course if you are flexible with your time. A good number of decent courses within 30-40 minute drive. Worst part is the winter months....it's a real bummer that from Late October through April you really don't have the option to play. Thankfully Gonzo's HD Sports is open and hoping to continue playing a few times a month on a simulator this winter. At least it'll get me out of the house! What do you do for a living? Currently I'm the Associate Director for Campus Recreation Operations at the University of Vermont. Prior positions in Campus Rec I was overseeing Intramural Sports and Club Sports and organizing golf leagues and tournaments with special events on campuses (not in Vermont). How’d you pick your user name? It's just a shortened version of my name

  40. Exactly this. If playing for fun, I don't care what anyone does really if it keeps things moving and helps them have fun. Playing for money or in a league where money/prizes are on the line, you play by the rules, or you don't play IMO. If he's willing to cheat for $5.00, you can bet, he'll be willing to cheat if you guys ever play a higher stakes game, and then that can get ugly. You've got to follow this wise man's advice!
    4 points
  41. This is always going to be a tough situation. If your in a league, playing for money, or playing to be able to post for your handicap then you should enforce the rules. Just because no one else wants to speak up doesn't make it acceptable to cheat. If your playing for fun and enjoyment with nothing on the line you can be more liberal. Roll the ball in the fairway, take a mulligan off the tee box. Especially when you are getting less proficient golfers into the game. Make it enjoyable for them, don't even keep score. No one wants to come home with a score of 150. But to your case, I would call him out on it or ask what he shot on that hole and then remind him of playing the incorrect ball. And then say "so I will put you down for a 7 or whatever it should be. Why would you want to hand over $5.00 to a cheater? If anyone want's the $5.00 you must honestly earn it. It's the principle. Some people take things pretty serious on the course. One day this guy will get paired up with the wrong person.
    4 points
  42. I'd make sure his scores are recorded correctly every time. In the groups I play, for similar stakes, at least two guys keep scores, and we reconcile them before comparing with other groups. Nobody keeps their own score without another scorekeeper checking on him. We each state our score as we leave the green, and we all check one another. We all make mistakes, we do it the way we do to correct them before they go too far, but it would apply in your case as well. I don't know the dynamics, if you guys are all friends away from the course, if you're a random group that just plays together, if you're part of a larger group of friends, if there are other folks you could bring in to replace him, whatever. You have two courses of action, I think, talk to him by yourself, or talk to a few of the other guys and confront him as a group. If this guy gets insulted by having his scores checked and corrected, do you really want to continue to include him?

They’re doing a remodel and Scotty has a special project in the works. The items for sale are on display in the windows and staff is there to handle your purchases. You just look in the windows and tell the, what you want. A staff member hands you an order sheet to fill out. I opted for a new hybrid cover, Pins and Pines and an Olive Green putting disc. I also learned that they will only sell a “Tour” headcover if you have the tour putter with you, a Scotty requirement. They had several models of Phantom X putters for sale with custom grips, paint fill and headcovers. The Phantom X 11 with blue paint fill, a Psychedelic Blue Matador grip and a Stars & Stripes headcover looked pretty sweet.

  49. Just checking in to reiterate a point. While I have not gotten any launch monitor numbers to prove this, I am longer with the AutoFlex without feeling like I'm swinging any harder. Based on my Mevo numbers at the range, my swing speed has actually come down a little bit since winter, and I might top out at 110-111 MPH now. I had a lesson yesterday and hit the driver pretty well this morning feeling nothing more than "nice, easy swings" and making sure I turned enough in my backswing. Results were: No. 3: 263 yards, slight fade, finished just barely in the right rough. Allowed me to go for the green in two. No. 5: 260 yards, pulled left going up the hill and hit a tree. Had to punch out. No. 7: 265 yards, pretty big fade that was blocked out by trees. Probably over compensated for hitting it left on No. 5. Had to hit a low runner up the fairway. No. 9: 241 yards, pulled left, hit grove of trees and ricocheted backwards. Was not a good swing, but got lucky and could hit over the trees up toward the green. No. 14: 280 yards, just right of fairway. Beautiful swing, longest drive I've ever hit on this hole. Led to a perfect layup on the par 5. No. 15: 261 yards, majorly uphill short par 4, kind of bunted driver that I overdrew. Was hole high though. No. 16: 284 yards, downhill. Didn't actually hit the ball all that squarely, but this was a great example of the forgiveness of the AutoFlex. Just barely in the left rough. No. 17: 315 yards, downhill. I hit the sweet spot and unfortunately was aimed just a bit right for the shot shape (slight fade). I ended up blocked out by a line of trees, but I absolutely killed this one. No. 18: 283 yards, uphill. Again, not my best swing as it was a bit heely and pulled left. As you can see, the driver was pretty good to me coming down the stretch. Nos. 16, 17, and 18 are also the most "open" holes (if my home course has such a thing), so I find it's a bit easier to swing away. I don't think I'll be selling the stock Rogue White anytime soon, but I am also not seeing a reason to switch back, either. I'm finding the AutoFlex to be very forgiving and the perceived distance gains are crazy.

    How'd you play?

    - 35/38 = 73 (+1) - 4/15 FIR - 11/18 GIR (4 birdies) - 29 Putts (1 3-putt, 9 2-putts, 8 1-putts) Scott Fawcett is not wrong when he says winning/playing well is about as much luck as anything else! I had a lesson yesterday and got sorted out and hit the ball excellently with everything today, but of the four birdies, I'd say only one I would have expected to go in. Birdied Nos. 1, 3, 9 and 10 and was actually -2 heading to 13. Bogeyed 13 after blocking my tee shot just a bit too far right and then having a "two chip" (DECADE term), and then had a bad three-putt bogey from 30 feet on No. 14 (also a double no-no in DECADE). Another gorgeous morning (albeit a bit steamy!) for golf and it's always great to put together that kind of round. It's fun making birdies. Stuffed a 9 iron on the par three No. 8 hole to within 10 feet. Best par three shot of the year, unfortunately I gave the putt a little too much gas and went through the break for a tap-in par.
