Surprises and Disappointments 2017 - Part 2

Back in early April I wrote who I thought were the biggest surprises and biggest disappointments of the year. The LPGA had only played 7 tournaments at that point. So much has changed since then. The LPGA has now played 21 of the 34 tournaments on this year's schedule, and I think it is time to take another look.

To me, the biggest disappointment is Lydia Ko.   I got to think it is a product of changing caddie, clubs and instructor.    From my perspective her game was not broke, so what is she trying to fix because it ain't working apparently.

Additionally, when the broadcasters show the flags of the player's home countries, I would like to see more American flags on the leader board.   I recently watched the Legends tournament and is was almost totally American flags.

I read that a lot of this came from her parents. From what an ex caddie said is her parents run everything down to how much and what she practices. This is very common for Korean families even after they move out of Korea they try to control everything their children do.

When the LPGA Tour Championship was played at Bulle Rock, I worked the practice area.   The tour had a rule that only two people could accompany the Pro on the range.   Along comes Michelle Wie with her caddie, Leadbetter, a physical therapist and her mother and dad.   When they were advised that three of them must leave, the therapist and her mother left with no problem.   Her father on the other hand pitched a fit and acted like a real jerk.   After what was some vigorous protest, he when to the other side of the ropes, so to speak.  I don't know how it was not embarrassing for Michelle.

She may be use to it by now who knows maybe it was.

Lydia Ko is by far the biggest disappointment this season. I'm also not sure what she is trying to accomplish, she was playing incredibly well, then, changed everything, maybe she will come back next season.

I have no clue what would make her change everything when she was playing so well.
