Player Height and Putter Length

TSauer

Recommended Posts

This has always been a subject that I've been curious about. I know that tall doesn't necessarily mean a longer putter, as it depends on your arm length and what setup style you prefer. I was messing around earlier today on my putting green and decided to choke down about 2 or so inches on my 36.5" putter just to try things out. I had to bend over more, obviously, but it felt like I had better control. I have a 34" putter on the way, I might give it a go before I lengthen it.

Anyway, this makes me wonder about everyone else. Have you experienced with different lengths? What did you settle on and how tall are you?

I have tried different length putters and have been playing 35" for a while.   I am 5'10" but play the ball outside of my eyeline resulting in the need for a longer putter.    I have in the past played as short as 33"

Also 5'10" ish (shrinking). It seems 34" is my best length.

33" crouched over the ball too much, 35" find myself gripping down.

I'm 6'1" and game a 34" putter I was fit for. I have been toying with the idea of going shorter as well, as I have a tendency to choke up about an inch for more control.

I use a 35" putter, tried 34" but found I was hunched over too much and couldn't get a good arm swing going. Also could never seem to find good distance control with it. I'm built fairly close to the ground at 5'7". My brother inlaw is 6'6" and uses a 34". It's all what feels best to you.

The goal is to have relatively flat sole at impact. For me most stock putters would yield flat bottom at 33-33.5". I did bend one of my putter 2* flat but that change the eye position so I bent it back to standard.

I understand you have the Cleveland putter with the aim indicator you may want to check with them how adding and subtracting length would effect the aiming at address.

Just my observation, avg medium height American is 5'8" I figure I'd add a few inches of height and based the standard spec on that someone under 6'. I can be totally off base but that's how I see it.

The Cleveland was my older game, it was 35" then I added an inch after reshafting it (after my Ping purchase -->). I then did Pings web fitting and ordered a 36.5" Sigma G Anser based on those results. I was certain that was the one, as it felt more natural. But after messing around with posture today, I might try a shorter one.

You may have seen my post about the Spider I purchased. It is coming in at 34" and I told myself I'd just add 2". However, I think I'm going to try the 34" and see what happens.

Oh I know it's more than height, I mentioned that. I was really just curious if there were any others giants out there that used short putters.

Depends on what gives to the most consistent stroke and what you're comfortable with. I'm 6-2 and had been using a 35 inch putter, but my I choke down several inches on my new 34, so it's probably around 32. Get fit if you can

If everyone stands straight and tall with arms relaxed by their side, the tips of your fingers will be a very similar distance from the ground regardless of individuals height. Putter length is determined by posture.

I will say the one thing I have found is cutting it down so far makes the head seem really light so I only try to do it to putters that have heavy adjustable weights or do a model like an odyssey tank.

I'm 5' 11 and 3/4", well I used to be 6" but shrunk this year!  I have been using short putters for years.  My putter is 32" and I stand fairly tall, not bent over very much, but my stance is wider than most which is why the putter is shorter than usual.  I find it more stable playing in a lot of wind.  My eyes are over the ball, and the lie angle is 72*.

I play with a guy who is quite tall, plays 33" and chokes down on his putter the closer he is to the hole. For the long lag putts he holds it at full length pretty much, but when he's got a 4' putt, hands are at the bottom of the grip and toe is up to probably 30*. Don't know how he does it, but it works for him.

Personally, my putter sets up pretty perfectly for me so I'm not gonna mess with a good thing ☺

... I can't load the 2nd page so hopefully I am not repeating someone. Putting is so unique to every player as you can pull/push the head with one or both hands. You can actively use your hands/arms/shoulders employing a smooth stroke or a short hit and different styles are abundant. That said, the most repeatable way to putt, is having a natural arm hang and employing a pendulum stroke. The longer the putt, the longer the stroke both back and forward.

... Take a driver and bend over in your putting stance and just let your arms hang and then grip the driver shaft there. That should be the length of your putter. I am 6'1" and my putter is 33.25". My son is 6'3" and has a 33.5" putter as he has copied my style and his height is offset by longer arms.

Right around 5'11" give or take a half inch either way. I just let my hands drop down and I measure the distance on the lie angle of my putter. I'm also a little bit different, so I'm super particular. My putter is cut to 34 and 3/8 inches and I've never putted better in my life after getting it cut down a few years back.
