Good morning from Niagara Falls, NY!

In 1984, the family and I stopped there en route to a Red Sox-Blue Jays series for which we had good tickets (in the pre Rogers Skydome era Exhibition Stadium).  We flew on a cheap flight to Buffalo and rented a car from there.

 

They made me go on some stupid boat where they gave us yellow slickers but I got soaked anyway, I grumped about it because the family would have been disappointed if I didn't, but it was actually kind of fun.

 

I think that basketball star Calvin Murphy went to school somewhere around there.

Welcome to the forums. I also have a funny Niagara Falls story.

 

Almost 20 years ago now, before the iPhone where anything you ever wanted to know is in your hand, I was going to NY State for business. I was driving up and my best friend (also before we knew to abbreviate that to BFF,) decided to ride with me.

 

We were going through Buffalo so I suggested we drive over and see Niagara Falls since we were that close and had time. I said "Get out the map and see where Niagara Falls is." He looked and said, "I can see the town and Niagara Falls State Park, but I don't see exactly where the falls are" Pause. "I do see something called American Falls on the map."

 

I said, "I ain't driving all this way to see no American Falls. By Golly I want to see Niagara Falls." Pause, "Unless of course, us dumb Texans have been calling the waterfalls themselves the wrong thing all our lives."

 

Of course we know the story now, but never really cared before that day. So we go and look at the water falls and sure enough, there was water flowing over a cliff. After about 20 seconds we lost interest but we did find an awesome hot dog place a block or two away. If I ever go back it will be for the hot dog, not to see the waterfalls.

 

I've since been to Buffalo 20 times, thankfully in the summer, and have been near the river, but never went back to the falls.

I once left the beautiful Strip in Vegas to look at the Grand Canyon.
