Pick 5!

Recommended Posts

If you could only use 5 clubs to play a regular course, what would they be? (Not including putter)

(Buddy and I had this discussion yesterday, as we were only playing a par 3 course, and the longest hole is 185 yards. Made me think I should get a small 4 way carry bag just for this course.)

Yesterday I used a 3w once, and the rest was gw, 7i/7w, 9i, 60⁰lw, pw, putter. Also made me wonder what 5 clubs would suffice to play a full course.

I thought hard about this, and based on my club yardages, If I had to dwindle it down to just 5, it would be 3w, 7w, 9i, gw, 60⁰ lw.

Im confident i could play to my handicap with just those clubs.

For my course.

Driver

6 iron - all par 3s are 5-7 iron depending on wind and I can play this on all par 5s as second shot

9 iron - good lower end club I can adjust distances or hammer for a few extra yards

Wedges for the misses or chips needed when only playing 5 clubs.

50*

58*

No putter. I'll use 6 iron

@Josh Parker the putter is not part of the 5, so you can use it.  😉

For my course, I’ll go with my 5 wood, 7 iron, GW, 54 degree, and 58 degree

Callaway Paradym AI Smoke Max 9* with Tensei AV Blue 55

PXG 5 and 7 woods with Mitsubishi Diamana Shafts

Mizuno Pro 225 5-GW with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts

I would say the answer is course dependent. For the purposes of this discussion I’ll use my home course and I’m taking the following:

Driver

3 hybrid

7 iron

Pitching Wedge

58 degree wedge

i can negotiate all of the par 3’s with either the pw or the 7 iron. The par 5’s with driver, 3 h, and pw. Some of the 4’s might be tricky, but it would be fun to try!

Not gonna lie, got pretty good at putting with my 6 iron. Ever since GM_Golf did it and I started watching his channel before good good came along, they would do that in his channel. Figured I’d start doing it way back when I was learning to play cause I was lazy to walk back to the cart for my putter. I learned to chip with my 6 iron though.

The 5;

3 hybrid 19*

4,  7, and 9 irons

59* wedge

With the L.A.B. DF 2.1 it is pretty much what I play most rounds with adding in what I can when it is not 5 club, adding in because of some overarching concern like deep rough for the 29* GInty.

My home course is relatively short, and funny enough I played one of my better rounds during the Cobra Challenge with just woods and wedges.

With that being said… I’d take a 3W, 4H, 7i, Pw, and my 54*

For my home course I think I would play:

3 wood because I've been hitting it good off the tee lately.

5 hybrid, this was my go to club during the Cobra Challenge 4 club round. I can hit it 130-160 depending on swing length. Plus, I'm stupid confident with it.

7 iron, just based on 3/4 par 3's.

PW

54, I use this club a lot around the greens anyways.

Mines pretty similar @GolfSpy_BEN, except I’d use my 5H (instead of your 3H). It’s my most versatile club and fills a nice gap between driver and my first iron.

I could play most courses using the following 5 clubs;

3 Wood , 4 iron, 7 iron, 9 iron, and 54 degree wedge.

Gripping down on some of them also would allow me to play a variety of shots if needed.

I would take my Driver, 5 hybrid, 8 iron, Gap wedge and 60 degree wedge.
You would be surprised how low you can score with less options and you learn how to get creative with what you have to play with.

i agree completely.

Playing as a kid and well into my twenties, i didn’t have a sand, gap, or lob wedge. As  an unintended benefit,  i learned to hit all manner of chip, pitch, flop, and sand shots with my pw. It has served me well, any time we do a 4/5 club challenge or an irons only round. I still chip with a pw occasionally, to keep the muscle memory intact.

For me I think I would pretty much stick to the five clubs I use to warmup before a round:

  • Driver
  • 5-iron
  • 8-iron
  • PW
  • 58° wedge

(If this is already posted, please merge or delete)

On my winter golf tour, the courses have been extremely wet lately, making it an exercise in futility to try and use my power hand cart which just gets stuck in the mud on soggy fairways. This has prompted me to carry no more than 10 or 11 clubs, including putter. On longer, hilly, spread-out courses, I drop down to 8 or 9 clubs (putter included). This exercise only forces me to drop a few more clubs, and here’s the 5 (plus putter, of course) that I would keep in my bag:

4-wood (actually an adjustable 3-wood that is cut down 1” and set to either 15.75* or 16.5* loft

4-hybrid (21* or 22* loft)

6 or 7 iron

9 iron or PW

one more-lofted wedge (between 54* and 59*)

The choices regarding which two irons and which higher-lofted wedge I would select would be based on overall course and par-3 hole lengths and how deep the greenside (and possibly fairway “pot”) bunkers are on the course I will be playing.

This is a fun experiment. I think I would play the course shorter if I was only carrying 6 clubs (putter being one of the 6). So I would opt to play from 5,800 yds or so. So that might mean I would not really need my driver as much.

19* Hybrid - carries 220 off the tee and 210 off the turf. Fairly good out of the rough.
6 iron - carries about 175 yds
8 iron - carries about 148 yds
50* wedge - carries about 112 yds
LW - never hit this full but I need it for bunkers, touch shots

I think I could still scrape it around with these.

I don't think my setup would change much unless the course was very short. I would take:

Dr

4hy

7i

PW

54*

My golf group did a 7 iron challenge last year where we took a club off the tee (I took 5W), 7i and putter. Greenside work was very tough, but it was fun!

I have my bag gapped pretty near perfectly for my game right now with a substitution of a newly added 2-iron driving iron. My old course (closed at the end of last season 😢) I could probably get away without driver but I'll go with an "all-around" setup.

Driver

4-Hybrid

7-Iron

PW

54°

Back in high school golf we used to do 7-iron only challenges on a 3-hole loop after practice so that became (and still is) my favorite iron in the bag. Shout out to Roy McAvoy!
