The weather was perfect, winds 5-15 mph, and temps in the 60's. This was my 2nd round out here. I shot my normal, boring 83. There is a temp green on of the par 5's, so par was 71. Card read 46-37. I came alive on the back. Finished birdie birdie. 18 is a 541 par 5, and I hit driver, 19* hybrid to pin high. Two putt bird. Makes me want to play a lot more. I love links golf and I've played that "unusual" RTJ links course several times. DId they finally get the greens problem solved? Last time there were several temp greens and that took away from the experience but even with that, it is one of my favorite US links courses. Popular Post Rygolf32
Proved to myself this past weekend that I'm officially out of walking 18 holes shape after riding much of last year/this year... Granted it was 85+ and very humid but shot even par on the front 9 and +6 on the back finishing out double/double/bogey/bogey. Was absolutely wiped halfway through that back nine. Popular Post JerryB
Owen and I were invited to join a group of six people for a morning round at River Heights yesterday. We knew most of them casually and I'd worked with Steve for 15 years before he retired. He'll be 72 soon and most of his shots go the same distance no matter the club, but they're almost always straight ahead. He wound up chipping in for the only birdie of the day. His cart partner, Dan, is a guy that Owen and I played with a few weeks ago. Both guys are great company. Super enjoyable round. I struggled a bit on the front nine, which included a horrific quad bogey on the par five 3rd hole where I just chunked my way down the fairway. Had a couple birdie looks, including the short par 3 seventh that I managed to 3 putt. After a three putt double bogey on 12, I really turned myself around. Three straight pars, two bogeys, then another par on 18 where I nailed a thirty foot putt to finish. I went 51/44 (+23) 95. Owen shot high 80s and Steve and Dan both around 100. Best part was Steve telling me afterwards that I had come a long way from the last time we'd golfed together. DoubleBogeyDad
Shot -11 in our Scramble today. Started on a tough stretch, -1 thru the first 4. I chipped in for eagle and then almost holed it from 80 yards on the next hole for another eagle, 1 foot tap in birdie instead. We were off from there and birdied the next 4 before cooling off and making 5 pars in a row. Eagled the last par 5, par on the last par 4, and I chipped in for birdie on the last hole. Shapotomous
I hope last night was the hokey pokey round of the year and i turned my game around. I hit 10 of 15 fairways, barely missing 4 of those 5. And 14 of 18 greens barely missing 3 of those getting up and down twice. So 3 birdies, 2 bogies and 13 pars later i ended up -1 for far and away the best round of the year. Putting was so-so with 32 putts but i burned a lot of edges with good putts i was just off with the reads a little. The big difference was a functional full swing and keeping the tee ball in play even though it wasnt very long. I hope this starts a trend! richk9holes
To make a really long story really short, I went into the 18th hole knowing I needed a 4 to break 80 for the first time and I psyched myself into a bogey for 40-40 80. Personal best for the course, 11/14 fw hit or just off, 10/18 gir. Averaged about 230y from the tee with Driver and I hit a preponderance of good shots. That's the positives. Had multiple idiot moments with wedge in my hand (18th hole i was 28y away after my drive scored a 5) and multiple 3 putts (one on each side) led to 36 putts. I had a round recently where I had 28 putts. Had I brought that side of my brain today I would have posted a great number. Instead I missed an eagle and 3 birdies on the right edge, 2 pars on the left edge and another just short. As bad as the stats have been, I committed to this putter for the season so I will keep working with it. Next time I play will be an early arrival and some drills on the putting green. Rick Bouchard
Well, I played leagues tonight and shot pretty good, 37, (includes a double on #4 par 3) This after not playing for a week because of a muscle strain on my back/right side. Not gonna lie, I did feel a slight pain on 2 shots. Driver on #1 tweaked it but I drilled it to 290+ (a flip 56 wedge over the green, bogey!), and 5 iron second shot on 9 (2 putt par). I did manage to win my match 5 to 4 {holes won} and my son lost his 5 to 4. I have a big 3 day tournament this Fri - Sunday in Williamsburg, Va. Moose Lodge International. Shapotomous
9 hole league play last night and I kept the momentum from the weekend with a 37. Tee ball was good again, hit half the fairways and the misses were about a yard off after rolling out of the fairway into light rough. I hit 8 of 9 greens and the 'missed' green was on the fringe after rolling past the pin. Just like the weekend, didn't make a putt again with mostly all tap in pars. Speed being the issue on most just not getting them to match the break. One 3 putt after misjudging speed on a downhiller and blowing it 8 ft past. I need to find some time to get over there and get the green speed figured out. The backyard green is much faster than the course greens and I am not adjusting when I play. The big improvements in the driver are from gripping down about 2". Lost about 10 yards probably per ShotScope stats but ball flight is straight and dependable. And the iron game improvement is from setting up with the ball slightly toward the heel resulting in sweet spot impact. Swing changes hadn't fixed the toe hits I was getting which hurt distance and direction. So I compromised by changing where I positioned the ball at setup. I hope this lasts a little before the next adjustment will be necessary. sirchunksalot, cksurfdude, Rickp and 6 others 9 Quote Modern Bag: G410 LST 10.5*, Hzrdus Smoke RDX 6.5 Flex; 915F 3w, Diamana S+ 70 S flex; Snake Eyes 18* 2h, 23* 4h & 27* 5h; JPX 900 Forged 6 - PW, PX LZ 6.0; Edison 2.0 49*, 53*, 57* KBS Tour 120 S; Heppler Fetch; Ball - MTB-X; Bag - Jones MyGolfSpy Edition! Popular Post MaxEntropy
I came crashing back to earth last night in league, at exactly the wrong time since my league handicap dropped to a 5 last week. I started decent - bogey, par, double, par, par, then the wheels fell off - triple, double, double. I think the decisions I made were pretty sound, just some very poor execution at critical times combined with some bad luck. It is now confirmed that the 15th hole has taken up residence in my head. It's a fairly hard hole, but not that freaking hard. I sure do make a mess of it, though. My scoring average on that hole this season is 6.4(!!!!) with 4 triples. 3 of the 4 triples have been drives pulled into the woods, resulting in a penalty. Based on where I have to drop, I never have a shot at the green, so a punch is necessary to get back into play, so it is really like a 2 stroke penalty. Last night I flared into some trees on the right, so had to punch, then terrible execution with wedges.... The only redeeming thing was a birdie on the last hole. I ended up with a +9, 45. When I can keep that more up, I’m hitting a pretty decent ball. it’s funny how just a few short putts, or a slightly missed chip can swing the score so far away from a good round- its aggravating to start with 2 pars, and then get an unlucky bounce that turns into a bogie, then follow that up with 2 more.. but then you get a birdie, and it’s “yea baby”!, but then you have a PBFU (post birdie fudge up)… then you go 2 over on the whole back, and here you are once again… same as it was yesterday… you just can’t make silly stupid mistakes and expect to shoot well… Kenny B, sirchunksalot, cksurfdude and 7 others 10 Quote TSr2 on tensi blue stiff Speedzone 3-wood on Tensi blue S Epic Max 5 and 7 woods on HZRDUS Reg flex Paradym 9 wood on HZRDUS reg flex P770 / P790 combo set on Ventus R-6 shafts 6-AW T22 Denim Copper 54°, 58° on Kinetic X Trajectory ER3 or, E.A.S. #4 (“Fang” or “Adele”) ProV1x, or, Maxfli Tour X .Org 14 cart bag Adidas Tour 360 , or Sketcher shoes
Kenny B
9 hours ago, MaxEntropy said: I came crashing back to earth last night in league, at exactly the wrong time since my league handicap dropped to a 5 last week. Your 15th hole sounds like my 7th hole; rarely make a birdie, par is unlikely, happy with bogey, but double is common. It's the second hardest hole on the front nine, but it is NOT that difficult of a hole... or at least I don't think is. BUT, I can put up some terrible numbers on that hole, but unlike you... I do it from the middle of the fairway!!! cksurfdude, sirchunksalot, MaxEntropy and 1 other 4 Quote “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
Big moose
Shot 42 this morning, started with 2 pars, ended par, birdie. I of course had 2 doubles, if I can ever avoid those double bogeys maybe I can break 40. Play well everyone and have fun.
